Mitch Gaulke #66 was selected by the National Football Foundation as the State of Oregon Scholar/Athlete of the year.
The announcement was made at the NFF banquet attended by over 1000 people at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion Hotel. The award comes with a $2500 scholarship and is based on achievement on the football field, in the classroom and as a leader in the community.

Mitch Gaulke has made a verbal commitment to accept a full ride football scholarship to Portland State University.

This class is certainly very solid do far. We'll have to see who else commits in the next couple weeks, but I'm quite pleased. The only real disappointments so far have been Poyer and Hagan. I hope they can pick up some transfers to play right away because a lot of these prospects need the redshirt year to bulk up.

I realize that those are high school clips, but he really gets off of his blocks to make plays.

Maybe a little undersized at 6', but I think this is a great pickup.

Is it me or have some guys been added to the roster on goviks.com?

Godinet, Hobby, Gorman, Orthmann, Truax, Webber, Alvidrez, Baldwin, Balfour, Brallier, Rasmussen.

Matagiese verbally commits to Portland State

http://www.kauaiworld.com/articles/2009/01/27/breaking_news/doc497fb42b8e155299724658.txt

Waimea High School senior defensive end Saui Matagiese has verbally committed to play football for Portland State University and has been invited to the National Letter of Intent Signing Day party on O‘ahu.

Local TV stations as well as ESPN and the CBS College Sports show are expected to televise the signing party live at 7 a.m. on Feb. 4 at the Neil Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. Others expected to sign at that time are the nation’s top recruit, Manti Te‘o of Punahou, and Mana Rosa of Baldwin.

Matagiese has had official visits with or from Colorado, Hawai‘i, UNLV, Utah and Idaho. Matagiese said the bigger schools he was aiming for filled their defensive slots and of those who were still looking to lure him, Portland State was the best.

The possibility of playing right away was also part of the reason for his committing to the Division I school.

Former Hawai‘i coach Jerry Glanville is the head coach of the Vikings’ program, which finished 4-7 overall, 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference.

Matagiese, an honor student and Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation all-star player, finished his final season with the Menehune with 13.5 tackles (11 solo, five assisted), 5.5 tackles for loss and an interception. He was invited to play in the first-ever Hawai‘i All-Star Football Classic at Aloha Stadium.

Thanks for posting FG. Matagiese sounds like a real great get! Plus he's a high school honor roll student. I love these Hawaiian kids. They know football.

PSU is recruiting the islands better then Oregon State is, which isn't typical. Hopefully we can make this talent work and win some ball games.

Also signing next week is Paso Robles lineman Mitch Van Dyk. He will be playing football for Portland State.

Wow! 6-9? We could use him on the hoops team too!

I also wonder if he'd work on the defensive line blocking passes!

Looks like Glanville and the Viks made a big catch down in Texas.

Man, how do you find this stuff?

You'd have to guess there are some academic difficulties. How else would they get this type of player?

PGE Park will always have a place in my heart, but Memorial Stadium it is not. I wonder what the deal is on this one...

It says Duke offered him, so his academics can't be that bad. May he be the first in a long line of 3-stars to head our way.

Keep in mind that this is the Duke of former UT offensive coordinator Cutcliffe. He'll make some sacrifices on the academic front for a little progress on the field. At the same time, he's not going to turn them into LSU football. I just hope the offer came after they evaluated his academics. I'm expecting big things given his reputation.

Josh Ah Toon from Newberg high school is going to be a Vik, I just can't find an article to back this up.
He is 6-3, 300 lbs and plays Defensive Tackle, and was a 1st team all-state selection.

He is #80 on the final Scout.com Northwest hot 100:
