We will have a shot to win the Big Sky title

really??? what have you seen where you feel safe saying that? We dont even have a qb that i feel confident about not to mention the fact that we lost all of our wrs and rbs. And if you want to win a big sky title you have to be able to put up bunches of points.

I am feeling uneasy about this year. Same kicker, shaky non-dominating QB's and no heir apparent to Hilliard or Croxdale.

Last year was our big chance to separate ourselves and become an elite FCS program. Insted, we shat all over ourselves and now we sit with an inexperienced team that will finish 5-6 AT BEST, likely worse...

I like and support the guy, but in a matter of months, the Sperbeck hot seat watch will be on.

Everyone relax, I think we’ll be ok. With the rotating BSC schedule we won’t have anywhere near as a buzz saw to deal with especially considering what the BSC has loved to hand us the past 3 or 4 years.

A JC kicker was recruited and won’t enroll until fall semester. Based on another shaky Diniz performance this spring, my guess is the new kicker wins the kicking role. Sperbeck brought in a capable punter (FINALLY) so hopefully he hits pay dirt with the JC transfer kicker and just like that the liability that was the kicking game should be remedied.

I think we’ll be fine at RB. If Ellis stays healthy and Ferman can generate some production between the tackles (the OL should be fine as always) things can’t be worse than last year. Add McCowan coming out of the backfield and we should be fine. The biggest concern will be at QB but we knew that as soon as Fleming blew his leg in the tug-o-war match last season. We lost a lot at WR but there have always been health issues there. I think we have plenty of capable receivers available next season and I expect them to step up.

The key will be defense. If the UConn CB transfer can really provide some serious game, a healthy Odiase, a returning stud in McMahon and if a couple of other experienced DB’s step up to provide a top notch secondary the defense should be solid. We have solid returning LB’s so nothing to worry about there barring injury. DL has a lot of open holes but there are a lot of players looking to fill those gaps. Bloomfield, White, and some size added to the interior via position changes and this defense could very well be the backbone to this team for the second straight season.

:coffee:

SDHornet says: "Sperbeck brought in a capable punter (FINALLY)"

Hmmm! I'm guessing SD didn't see the spring game where Heath DOMINATED.
3 punts:
43 yd NET avg.
All 3 were FC's with NO return
Avgerage hang time of 4.4 seconds

The first two high snaps brought Heath off the ground totally disrupting his timing and balance, but he was still able to punt the ball fast enough to avoid pressure (of full punt block) by the defense. Not to mention hitting perfect spirals which shows sweet spot accuarcy and skill as opposed to luck.

I heard it said that "Heath had the best performance of the spring game"

The new punter is big and strong and he is a really nice young man. I've worked with him and like him alot.
But make no mistake about the FACTS: Heath is faster, stronger, has a full half second more hang time on his punts and he is more accurate at placing the ball than the new kid.
Plus Heath is MUCH more consistant......and he proved it to everyone watching....... ALL spring long!

Go Hornets!

The fact that Sperbeck scheduled to play two D1A teams this year just shows that he is confident in this team. We have good transfers that entered and are entering the program.

Offense:

QB- Either Mason Magleby or Garret Safron will start. Most likely Magleby will because it will be best for the team in the future and he has D1A playing experience playing at Nevada. He also has a great arm and can run a little bit. But if he fails Safron will be a good experienced back up. Magleby will replace the inconsistent Flemming.

RB- Sam McCowan & AJ Ellis will split time but like the QB situation I think AJ Ellis will eventually become the starter. Sam McCowan will rotate with him & give him a blow when he is tired. I like the both of them and think AJ Ellis can make an immediate impact because he has D1A playing experience at Fresno State. He maybe the best RB in the Big Sky. These two guys will replace Hillard.

WR- Morris Norrise led the team in receptions last year and will be back he will be a huge target this year if he is healthy. DeAndre Carter played a good amount and has grown up a lot will start. TJ Knowles is going to have to step up and play up to his potential being a D1A transfer from South Florida. Like I have said before he can be the Randy Moss of this team. He should start. These three guys should replace Reed, Hendershott, and Deadder.

OL- Was very young last year we only lost one starter in Dustin Pfaff. They will be very talented this year. Maybe the best O-Line in the Big Sky if they work at it. They will create large holes for the RB's to run through and create a pocket for Magleby to throw.

Defense:

DL- Weakest aspect of the defense. They need to replace Zach Nash & David Coleman which is not easy. Not sure who will step it up. We need a D1A transfer to fill this spot and make an immediate impact.

LB- All the guys are returning! Jeff Badger, Cody Allen, and Todd Davis. Davis lead the team in tackles and badger was third. Cody played the least out of the three but will provide experience and has looked very good this spring. They will be the best LB tandem in the Big Sky hands down! They will dominate this year again! All are very talented and are going to have to play even harder this year because they will not have as many experienced guys on the D- Line.

DB- We lost Kyle Monson our All Big SKy Cornerback, Joe Larche our Honorable Mention safety, and Marquese Smith who filled in for Odiase; all were solid, experienced players. We only have two starters returning in Ryan McMahon and Osagie Odiase. Both of them starred on defense last year. McMahon was second on the team in tackles and would've lead the team if he didn't miss as many tackles as he did, he has progressed through Spring practice. Odiase is a very experienced cornerback and will be good he can stay healthy this year, he was a consistent player when he did play. He intercepted Oregon State. After watching all of Chris Lopes' videos on YouTube I truly think he will start opposite of Odiase. He is a playmaker, extremely fast, tough, and plays the game with passion. He led his team in special teams tackles at UConn he has D1A playing experience. Odiase and Lopes will be the best cornerbacks in the Big Sky. I don't know who will replace Larche he was a very tough player. I didn't really see anyone stand out this Spring. We will have to wait until the end of summer camp to see who will win the job. Lopes will easily replace Monson.

Special Teams:

Returners- DeAndre Carter, and Chris Lopes will be the Kickoff Returners. Carter and Lopes are going to have to compete at the Punt Return spot.

Punter- Heath did well in the Spring game. But must be more consistent

Kicker- Jason Diniz must be more consistent.

YES, all Hornet players must be more consistent BUT Heath was a perfect 3 for 3 in the spring game. College punters don't get much better stats than that. Nobody else on the field had a more consistent day. I realize all kickers look alike to most people but it is the new punter who has consistency problems not Heath.

You have your wish, Diniz is no longer a factor!
Sure hope the new kicker is what you hope for because he is all we have now. :ohno:

I agree; the 2 FBS games are all about the money, nothing more.

FamousBaller; a punter and kicker would not have been recruited had these areas been fine heading into next season. If a little competition brings out the best in Heath and Diniz and they are able to step up their game and keep their starting roles than so be it. As far as I’m concerned let the best players get the nod. I’ll also add that if Heath and Diniz get the nod and continue to falter, I won’t place any blame at their feet it’ll all be on Sperbeck at that point.

It will be funny to see all of you hop on the band wagon once we start winning.

bandwagon??? aside from a few posters from other big sky teams we are all sac state fans here and always root for the team. But when you have followed the team for any length of time you learn to temper your expectations a little.

Regardless, we have have the talent in the players now and the incoming players to win a Big Sky title this year. I have faith in this team.
I like the enthusiasm bigsac, but we have too many question marks to be in the discussion for a BSC title at this point. Personally I won’t get excited until I see some life from the offense.

I can guarantee you 110% that the people on this board are not bandwagon fans. We all have scars and heart aches from many years of following a lackluster program.

I like your newbie enthusiasm and outlook though. Prove me wrong.

Fair words to be sure but not exactly the way it is...
I have always agreed our freshman specialists needed to be much better after a less than solid season. Nobody has worked harder to help them than I have. That's because I believe they are the right men for the job. I preach being great at your job and therefore having no fear of competiton, As always - may the best man win!

SD I truly enjoy your writing and analysis which shows much love and passion for Sac State. You are the best on the board. But may I offer this reality for your consideration. The new kicker and punter were not recruited they were hired to replace the ones we have now. It's a done deal, there is no competition!

When I said Heath dominated, I meant over the other punter. During the spring "competition" Heath blew the new guy off the field every day in every way! And Jason Diniz was also excellent going 15 for 19 with the first team. The two blocked kicks (week 1) were with the 2nd unit and were line related. But it doesnt matter at all because the "starting roles" in this case are NOT going to be determined by whomever is the best next fall. We would all like to believe that the "nod" goes to the best player on the field but that is simply not true. Next year the newly hired kicker and punter will be starting regardless of the valuable BSC game experience lost or any supposed competition on our practice field. Neither you (nor anybody else) will get the opportunity to blame Sperbeck regarding special teams. No way is our coach gonna risk that.

There is an old saying that applies to recruiting and walkons: "If they don't pay, you won't play"
And just as that is true, so is this: Jason Diniz is no longer a factor :ohno:

We should all hope that Heath (who is widely regarded as one of the best young punters in the country) is encouraged to remain a Hornet. Don't hold your breath!

We should blame Sperbeck for putting us in this situation. He recruited two high school walkons to take over the kicking duties, and think everything was going to work out.
