2013 Recruiting Thread

A familiar last name in Viking folklore:

LO’s Mitch Lomax Lands Portland St in what could be one of Many Offers

http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/2012/09/21/mitch-lomax-lands-portland-st-first/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One of the State’s top players In Mitch Lomax (6-4 240 Sr. LB) received his first offer today from the hometown Portland St Vikings. As most know Mitch is the son of local legend and NFL QB Neil Lomax. Almost as much as any kid state wide, it was a wonder how Lomax hadn’t received an offer yet. Mitch will be in the running for state defensive player of the year, as he is extremely athletic and just fast.

He single handily changed games as a junior, earning first team all league honors on their way to a state title. Their (14-0) record and 14th place finish nationally was something that the entire community embraced. Lomax is on a bunch of different schools radars, and will have multiple options when all is said done. You can’t teach legit size, and professional genes so his upside is through the roof. He has been a three sport athlete his entire life, so if he was to focus just on football he could be scary.

Mitch is a class act that works hard on and off the field and is very deserving. The Lakers haven’t lost in 17 straight games, and they don’t plan on starting any time soon. We definitely for see Mitch receiving some Pac 12 type offers, as he is as good as advertised. Last season Coach Coury reiterated that, “the kids the real deal”. Mitch was the first LB on our ” Top Athletes No Offers” section at NEI, so we have a lot of respect for his game

Neil has been a big part of the turn around at Roosevelt HS, as a coach and mentor to the athletes. He has missed most of Mitch’s games prior to this year for that reason, but will be attending all of them this season. We wish Mitch continued success, and congratulations on what will most likely be one of many quality D1 offers.

Portland State has offered and could use his talents, especially at CB:

One of the Most Dangerous Two Way Threats in the Northwest Bruce Jones Jr of Sunset

http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/2012/10/05/bruce-jones-jr-of-sunset/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bruce Jones Jr. (6-0 175 Sr. RB/DB/KR) of Sunset is a 16 year old senior that is one of the best overall athletes in the Northwest. Both him and his Sunset Apollos have played outstanding football thus far in 2012. Jones Jr holds an offer from Portland St, in what was a great move by Nigel Burton and company. Bruce really likes the Vikings and has spent recruiting time down at the campus, but his primary focus remains on the season.

“We have played well so far, so we just want to continue to build on that and finish the conference season strong”. The Apollos have been one of the more over achieving teams state wide, under the leadership of one of the northwest’s legendary head coaches in Faustin Riley. They sit at (3-2) and ranked #11 on our latest NEI Top 10. Both close losses came at the hands of #2 Jesuit and #4 Aloha, who are regarded as two of the top teams in the entire region.

Jones Jr is ranked as one of our top DB’s and RB’s in Oregon, and has 9 Tds over the first 5 weeks. Bruce attended our elite events over the off season and multiple regional camps and combines, before his big day at the UW Showcase Event. This was huge as PSU was able to make an important evaluation before offering.

You could tell from a young age that Bruce had some god given attributes that couldn’t be taught. The most exciting thing about Jones is that his upside is through the roof. He’s not even close to reaching his size and strength potential, and he is an almost certain candidate to red shirt due to his age.

Bruce is one of the most dangerous return men in the entire northwest, which only helps up his stock. He projects as a DB, but is one of the best running backs in the state, and just so happens to have returned multiple kicks in his career already. All of these options make him extremely versatile and valuable to schools looking for a kid that gives them options.

“I couldn’t ask for a better Coach to play for (Faustin Riley), and my teammates have been ballin”, Jones Jr says. ” There are too many guys playing well to name just a few, but our WR’s are some of the some state’s best in Jeff Bieber, Trevor Caldwell, and Ryan Hendry and lineman Austin Johnson has been phenomenal”.

We are big backers of Bruce as he is a great kid, that could legitimately be a Pac 12 type athlete if his upside is any indicator. He has his Sunset Apollos playing good football, with a monster game tonight coming against #9 Southridge. Good things lie ahead for Sunset and Bruce Jones Jr.

I'm wondering how the step backwards this season, will affect signings in 2013?

Will the kids see the big picture and see this season as a temporary setback? or does the instant gratification mentality of the day dictate that we may lose a couple of kids that we should be able to sign? Does the situation at UM have any affect on the rest of the conference, or does their history grant them a pass on a poor season, but they will still be able to sign the type of athlete they've come to expect?

I'm afraid of the same thing. It seems like we're not getting as much interest from recruits as we did last year, and it probably has to do with the struggles on the field. I just hope we can still bring in a solid class of recruits this next season, and last year wasn't a fluke.

By my calculations, 20 (?) freshmen have played so far this year for the Viks. Several have started in games. If I was an impact player coming out of high school, knowing I had that opportunity to play right away just might be the tipping point in my decision, especially with the direction the program is headed. With as young a team as this is, if we can win 2 of the next three games, any recruit not plugged into a BCS program should strongly consider this Viking program. But then again, keep in mind that I'm a real homer, and spouting off is sometimes what I do best!

Salem Academy’s Justin Outslay gets first Offer from Portland State

http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/2012/10/30/justin-outslay-portland-state/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A kid we got to know well over the off season, Justin Outslay (6-5 275 Sr. OL) of Salem Academy, got some news he had been waiting a long time for this morning as the Portland St Vikings extended a scholarship offer.

The talented 3A lineman was a fixture at our elite events over the off season and was ranked as one of our “Top Athletes with no Offers” before today. Its tough to get acknowledged out of a small school in Oregon regardless of your skill set, so this was a breath of fresh air for the big man. Outslay currently sits on the bubble with a host of D1 and D1aa schools, and is weighing his options carefully.

PSU has done an outstanding job getting the top recruits out of the northwest over the last couple of seasons. The Viks scored offering a kid that is a dedicated student (4.0) at a tough private school, and also an athlete with a frame ideal for Division 1 football.

Head Coach Jim Stomps came to the school three years ago and has a brought a demeanor that has resonated within the community. The Crusaders were (1-9) his first season, but look to make the playoffs for the first time in 21 years with a win over Toledo this week. “Justin is a kid im very proud of, he has worked extremely hard on and off the field to get to where he’s at”. Coach Stomps continued, “He’s been the first kid in the weight room and the last to leave over the years showing off unique leadership skills”.

Outslay is the first D1 athlete to ever come out of the school making this offer even more special. “I just want to give thanks to all my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for believing in me and helping me through this process… I started out last year attending the Barton Elite Camps with not many people knowing who I was and it just went from there”.

Justin continued, “I really like Portland St, I have been to a couple games and practices and the best thing about them is the coaching staff… Coach Davis and Coach Burton are doing a great job getting top recruits and I feel really good about the university”.

He hasn’t made a decision yet, but does really like the Vikings. What he has accomplished at a small 3A school has been incredible. Oregon and highly respected line coach Steve Greatwood have offered Outslay a preferred walk on spot, which is a big deal coming from the Ducks. Justin will be weighing his options and feels blessed by the opportunities he has been given.

We can’t say enough good things about Justin and what Coach Stomps has done for Salem Academy Football. ” I’m fortunate to be able to coach a remarkable group of young men, who have bought into a vision brought to them from an old southern boy out of Alabama… I have my family at home and also a group of 46 young men that I consider my sons as well”, coach says.

Congrats to Outslay and all those involved with Crusader Football. What a remarkable turn around it has been.

Sirois Commits to Vikings

http://www.northwestprepreport.com/alex-sirois-is-a-psu-viking" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Century High School Big Man Alex Sirois worked out the terms of a scholarship tonight to Portland State University and has committed to become a Viking next Fall.

This is something the 6'5"- 300 pound Senior has hoped for after receiving an offer from North Dakota this Summer.

"This is my school of choice. Being a Viking has so many positives for me and my family. I could not have asked for anything more," said Alex tonight by phone.

What are those positives?

"Well #1 is the location. I am only going to be a 30 minute drive from home. And you never know when I might need to pop back home and grab a snack or have the laundry done (smiles and jokes Mom has told him "maybe"). Then of course they get to see us play half of my games and do not have to try and come to Montana or North Dakota. Then there is the degree program I am going to go after in Mechanical or Civil Engineering. PSU has that program down," said Sirois. "Lastly the sense of family seems to be there and to learn the offensive line form a guy like Coach Brad Davis is going to be just amazing. He is one of the best technicians there is."

So many positives there in the Park Blocks for Alex at PSU.

The Vikings are saying O-Line but are not saying which spot yet and he is fine with any of them. They liked his agility and athleticism for such a big guy and feel that with some technical changes he can be very good based upon what he heard from the Staff.

So is he all set?

"Yes. I am 100% committed to the Vikings now," said a very upbeat Century Jaguar. "My Dad is really excited because he was not wanting to go out to North Dakota and is a Vikings Fan anyway. And my Mom is of course feeling great about this."

This week they challenge the hot Southridge Skyhawks. Alex feels the Team is ready and says he can not wait for game time. He and his Jaguars will sure have their work cut out for them.

The Vikings have already landed Austin Powell and Bryon Bodon at the linemen slots. They are both All State Caliber linemen from Crescent Valley High School.

The Viks have also offered Chad Bach of Mountain View and Justin Outslay of Salem Academy. These two are both huge and powerful kids too. If the Vikings get all of these guys they won't need linemen for a few years!

Best wishes to Alex Sirois and the Jaguars and to the Vikings and all these great Oregon Prep Athletes!

That's one big kid! Hopefully he can contribute immediately, on either line. We could use a solid kid like him to replace Jester at DT, but if he plays OT, that's good too.

Nice grab for us.

Wow!

Vikings Land Two More Top Linemen Despite Off Season

Wow, again! :D

Did The Vikings Just Get The Find Of The Decade?

http://www.northwestprepreport.com/desmond-thompson-commits-to-portland-state-for-football" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sounds like Desmond will be one of the many commits the coaches will be sweating about until the letter is signed. One thing the VIks have going for them that other large programs don't. If the kid wants to play right away, these coaches seem willing to let them earn a spot. This kid may have a huge upside, but because he is still a raw talent, it might take him three years to get in a game at the Pac-12 level. He could play in a year at PSU.

I hope it sticks. This kid sounds great. Note the comment about Eric Jackson being a phenom recruiter.

Two Time GSHL Defensive Player of the Year John Norcross of Camas commits to Portland State

http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/2012/12/10/norcross-portland-state/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One of Washington’s top athletes and best defensive players, John Norcross (6-2 210 Sr. LB/RB) of Camas, just made big news committing to Portland St University. This is huge for both the athlete and PSU as Norcross was a two time POY in the Greater St Helens league, and had an absolutely dominant senior campaign.

Norcross averaged more then 10 tackles per game and scored 17 touchdowns on 50 touches to summarize how well he played in 2012. Props to Nigel Burton and his staff for landing the very versatile linebacker. Burton confirmed the commitment with Taylor Barton making this 2013 recruiting class another special group.

The first thing I ever heard about John was how good of a kid he was, and so was the second. He’s an outstanding football player that will specialize on defense but can play multiple spots. Camas was maybe the hottest team in the northwest throughout most of the season, before the junior based group ran into state champion Skyline in the Semifinals.

Regardless Norcross had a career that he can very proud of as he told the Columbian a few days back, “this year everybody just got after the ball, and I could always trust my teammates to be on top of their assignments…It was one of the best defenses you could ever play on”.

We wish John continued success at the next level as he will be a standout scholar athlete in the Big Sky.

Salem Academy's Justin Outslay commits to play football at Portland State

http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20121210/UPDATE/121210032/Salem-Academy-s-Justin-Outslay-commits-play-football-Portland-State?odyssey=nav%7Chead" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Salem Academy senior lineman Justin Outslay has verbally committed to play football at Portland State.

Outslay, a 6-foot-5, 287 pounder, has been a three-year starter for the Crusaders and is believed to be the first football from Salem Academy to commit to play Division I college football.

Outslay said that Portland State recruited him to play on the offensive line.
“I feel pretty confident any of the five spots on the offensive line,” Outslay said. “We’ll see where things go.”

The first day of National Letter Intent signings is Feb. 6.

Outslay said the recruiting process for him started about a year ago when he gave up basketball to concentrate on football.

“I said college football Division I is my dream so I had to sacrifice basketball,” said Outslay, who is back playing basketball this winter. “Since basically two weeks after the season got in the weight room and just lifted for a couple months.”

Outslay was a first-team all-PacWest Conference selection on offensive and defensive line this season as a senior and a first-team all-league offensive lineman, a second-team defensive lineman and an honorable mention all-state offensive lineman as a junior.

“He’s done a great job,” Salem Academy coach Jim Stomps said. “He’s handled it very well, not only doing that, but keeping a 4.0 average and outstanding grades on his SAT.

“His academics drew a lot of people to him at first, but then when they see his size and what he can do on the field, and just the type of young man he is with his leadership and his effort drew a lot.”

Looks like the Viks picked up an experienced TE for next year via the JC route:

TYSON HELLER, Tight end
Santa Barbara, California
Santa Barbara C.C.
Ht: 6'4"
Wt: 250 lbs
40: 4.6 secs
Bench Max: 305
Squat Max: 415
Class:2013 (Junior College)

COLLEGE CHOICES
Portland St. COMMITTED (12/10/2012) Offered 12/07/2012

*also had an offer from Texas State

As usual, Ian's getting the job done on Viking news!

Portland State lands two linebackers

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2012/12/portland_state_lands_two_lineb.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

While the Portland State defense has been up and down over the last few years, one thing has remained constant: the solid play of the linebacking corps. John Norcross, of Camas High School (Wash.) and Jake Woolley, of College of the Canyons (Calif.) will look to continue that tradition next year after verbally committing to the Vikings class of 2013 this week.
Woolley is a late-blooming junior college outside linebacker who will likely be looked to for immediate help in replacing the three linebackers lost to graduation. Norcross will join a talented young group of local linebackers, including Zach Walen (Lake Oswego High), Brandon Brody-Heim (Union High), and Daniel Halverson (Grant High) from last year's class.
Woolley has used his two years at College of the Canyons to add 45 pounds to his 6-foot-4 frame. Now listed at 235 pounds, he said he is much more explosive and physical. University of Arizona offered him a scholarship but pulled it when he hesitated to accept. He said he was also offered by Northern Colorado, South Dakota and Old Dominion. He visited Portland State last weekend and said it felt different. "Right when I came there, I knew within the first hour it was the place for me," he said.
Norcross doesn't quite have Woolley's size, but he showed a great knack for the game as a linebacker and fullback for the Papermakers this year, helping them to the semifinals in their first season at Washington's 4A level. The scholarship offer from Portland State coach Nigel Burton caught him off guard.
"Out of the blue during the home visit, coach Burton asked me if I had received any offers and I was like, no, not yet," he said. "He said that was impossible because I'm offering you right now. I was definitely surprised and overjoyed."
