2013 Recruits

PS;

This may be the year that we start getting early commits. If we have offered and they are truely interested, waiting might be the wrong tactic. If they hesitate, the offer could vanish.

Well, its always nice, for the fans, to know the direction of the team. Of course, that is purely up to the coaches, since they are the professionals and the ones who know which course is the best one, but still having a few names on a list shows, us, the fans, where the team is headed. Its nice knowing that Weber can be a serious contender for top athletes.

A quick article on two of our recruits:

Jaleen Smith (Brazosport), 2013, 6'3", G: The Brazosport guard can score and is a diamond in the rough. At this time, Smith carries offers from Weber State and the University of Montana.

Khory Ross (Brazosport), 2013, 6'5", F: A top-50 wing in Houston, Ross has great hands and has drawn interest from the likes of Weber State and University of Montana.

Joe Boyd (class of 2013), who had an offer from Weber, has verbally committed to New Mexico St.

Boyd decommitted in October. In the first game of the season he had 23 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. But in the second game he was injured and hasn't played since. I wonder if Weber's offer is still on the table?

"Guards Nick Emery and T.J. Haws are obviously the prized recruits coming out of Quincy Lewis's Knights program, but junior transfer center Eric Mika isn't too far off. Mika, who played his first two years at Waterford, played with the Knights throughout the summer.

Weber State and Utah State recently became the first two schools to offer the 6-foot-8 center."

Mika committed to BYU in December.

Boyd would be a huge addition, especially on the offensive side of the court. He has the skills to play inside and outside. I read an article about him that stated, for a big, he has great hands, excellent ball-handling skills, can really spread the offense with his shooting abilities (he is a big who can hit the 3 consistently), and is a horse on the boards. Defensively, he has the ability to shut down the middle of the court. Also, he is quick enough to guard athletic 3's. At the time Boyd de-committed to NMSU, he only had two other offers: Northern Arizona and Weber State. I think when he got injured NMSU started looking for other options. They may have dropped him. From what I can find, Weber's offer to Boyd is still on the table for him.

Imagine having two really athletic 4's in Bolomboy and Boyd.

6-9 Brett Jolley of Carroll High School made an un-official visit on Saturday. Great time to come to the game!! Right now, he is a top 75 Texas prep.

6'4" SG described as athletic slasher, hawking perimeter defender, improving 3 pt shooter

This kid is long, athletic, and plays above the rim. He definately has some ability. The question is, what kind of competition has he played against? He does have a lot of potential. :coffee:

Trying to figure out anything about local recruits is an absolute nightmare. YIKES!!

Anyway, I have tried my best to find anything, and this is what I've got (these are no solid by any means):

Jordan Darger from Orem high
Race Parsons from South Sevier
Hayden Schenck from Weber

Darger is the only one that is on record as saying that he is being recruited by Weber, but the other two have both, from unique sources, said that they are receiving interest (George will you double check these for me. You have a great pulse on the locals).

Of course, our biggest recruit for 2014 is Jared Stutzman in Idaho. He is an automatic mission, but even though Weber fans won't see him till 2016 or 2017. He would be a great addition to our program. LK is also going after him.

Some other 2013 recruits:
Zack Hunsaker Orem (Coach Hunsakers son)...
Brandon Miller Brighton

I only know about Parsons and Miller because both have been looked at by us. The others I don't know about. I have seen all of them play though and can give my opinion on that. Of the kids you mentioned, IMO only Miller is a D1 player at this time. He has a great game and was much better than I was expecting when I saw him in the state tournament. Great shooter, better ball handler than I thought, a scorer. I don't know if Weber is recruiting him, and with another year of HS and AAU ball he could go high major, or high academics like his older brother at Harvard.

I've seen Parsons play a few times, and I know that a lot of people are high on him, maybe based on his stats, but I don't think he's close to being a D1 player right now. He has the game of a 3, but the body of a PG or SG. He does a lot of things pretty well, but nothing great. When I watched him, he was playing F, but he really needs to work on his perimeter game if he's going to play D1 ball.

I saw Darger, Schenk and Hunsaker play in the state tournament, and I just don't see any of them being close to the guards/wings Weber State usually gets.

Of the 2013 class who aren't committed I'd say Parker Van Dyke is the best player in the class. Good chance he'll end up at Utah. Miller is next best. There's a kid at Kearns, Dayon Goodman, who I think will be a D1 player eventually. He's 6'7" maybe 6'8". He's starting to get a lot of attention and I wouldn't be surprised if Rahe is on him. This one is just my opinion andI haven't heard any talk about him at all. His name is Parker Brown from West Jordan. He didn't get a lot of minutes last year because of the seniors they had, but I saw him in the state tournament. He's extremely athletic, a great leaper. Problem was that he didn't play enough to get an opinion of his skillset.

In the 2014 class there's a big not too far from you at Roy, Brekkott Chapman. He's 6'8" or so and was part of a team from Davis county that just won a tournament in Boise. He's going to get a lot of interest and I'm sure Rahe knows about him. Another big is Ryan Andrus from American Fork. People are really high on him and he's getting a lot of interest. We offered Andrus already. He's a very good baseball pitcher, and may go that way. Then there's Shad Watson from Box Elder who can just flat out score the ball. Very strong and developed for a soph. He may end up playing football. Nixon from Orem will probably end up at BYU. Another kid is a PG from Wasatch Academy named Cody John. Very impressive player for being so young. He might be class of 2015.

That's all I got.

George, nice write up!! Whenever I look over the class of 2013 I have to scratch my head. From what I have seen, the available players in this class need to develop a lot more to become DI talent. The best from the class have already made their choice (sad more Zoobs), and I agree, I'm sure Parker will end up at Utah.

Race Parson's may be good, but what would make him better (which he might already do), is to play on an AAU team with different guys than the South Sevier high school team. Get completely out of his region, be like Bradshaw (who, personally, I think is the best Fr recruit your Ags have coming in -Quan Connor could be a nice addition- and I think very highly of Marcel Davis...) and go play with guys he hasn't played with before, at a higher level, faster pace. In my opinion, it would be the best thing for his development, if he wanted to become a DI player.

Chapman and Goodman...hmmm. I've heard about Chapman, but not a lot, and really nothing about Goodman. I'll do some research. Thanks for the leads. Oh, for Brown, the Summer AAU period is a great time to shine.

This is my opinion, but I think Joe De Ciman, is a far better prospect than Shai Fields. I hope Rahe and Co. are giving this kid a good long look. He would be a total steal.

Fields would have been a sensational player for us if he had found it in his heart to stay focussed and keep his head on straight. We have lost two really good players this year. Fields and Brown are both top athletes who have outstanding basketball skills. If there is a knock on this staff, it is that they have not been able to keep and effectively use these guys. I think that both of these players could have helped get us to the next level.

When we get kids like this in the future, we need to find a way to keep them around. :twocents:
