2013 Season

A bit of historical trivia, the two schools, by what-ever name they have used, have had a long history of athletic competition, and at one time may have been considered rivals.

That being said, CSU Pueblo, or USC, or SCSC, or whatever has never won a football game over UNC, CSC, CSTC, Greeley Normal School or whatever, so in the past the rivalry did not include football. 8)

Just throwing that tid-bit out there to kick around a bit..

Probably didn't help that we didn't have football for a 20 year period there. I don't like us scheduling the game against UNC only due to it meaning nothing come playoffs. We could have scheduled a decent D2 team and won to help our SOS like the win over West Texas did for us this year. Not sure how the system for FCS works as far as that goes on if a loss to us would hurt you guys or not.

FCS requires 7 wins for playoff eligibility, but only DI wins count. So a loss to you guys would look bad on our resume, but a win wouldn't help it. Basically the game is a no-win situation for us, which is why scheduling it was unbelievably stupid.

Please excuse the spelling, but oui Vey
How shortsighted are we.....prove wehave arrived vs a DII school
Please don't take offense CSUP FANS, but why lay it on the line Al a previous Imploding
CSUP IS THE REAL DEAL
WTF are we thinking???????

CSU-P is defeated by West Texas AM today. That's the second year in a row they've come into the playoffs ranked #1, then only to have been beaten in the 2nd or 3rd round. CSU P is a good program, no doubt about it, but folks they play in the RMAC. The RMAC is not considered an elite D2 conference, like the NCC was when we played. The wolfpack steam-roll through the regular season, but when faced tougher competition, they go down in defeat.

The RMAC has cost control they only offer like what, 24 scholarships compared to the D2 max of 32?

Not sure the exact numbers but they don't fully fund.

Another reason we have nothing to gain by playing them... I just have Chadron... Hillsdale (is that what that school is called) flashbacks...

Sure, but we have also beat WT twice the last two years and dominated an Indy team that the week before put a hurtin' on a good Midwestern team. Tough to beat the same team twice in a year that's for sure, WT showed up to play and we came out flat.

We can fund 28 scholarships, the D2 limit is 36. Really hurts us come playoff time but until that limit is removed or we move conferences we just have to find a way to overcome it. We could easily fund the full amount if allowed to do so. I do know the recruiting classes are getting much, much better than a couple of years ago, and there are rumors of some players at decent FBS schools who are unhappy and want to transfer to CSU-P this spring. Rumors are just that until they happen, but it seems we have gotten a couple of good transfers each year that make a big impact. That would be nice to get prior to coming to Greeley.

Since next season might actually be exciting to talk about for once, let's discuss. We don't know the full schedule, but the Big Sky slate looks like this:

Southern Utah
@ Sacramento State
@ Idaho State
UC Davis
BYE
Montana State
@ North Dakota
@ Northern Arizona
Cal Poly

Also, we get 4 non-conference games next year instead of three, I know one is at Wyoming and if memory serves we go to Northern Iowa as well. I'd assume we'll host a D2 somewhere, and I don't know about the fourth game. Thoughts? Expectations?
THE OFFICIAL SCHEDULE CAME OUT IN THE TRIBUNE THE OTHER DAY. YES WE CAN ADD WYOMING, NORTHERN IOWA & CSU PUEBLO. THIS IS A TOUGH SCHEDULE BUT AN EXCITING ONE W/6 HOME GAMES. GO BEARS!! :yikes:

Decent write up in the Denver Post about UNC rebounding a bit, nothing too insightful but at least it's positive press.

I think a seventh home game has been added on August 31st. Not sure the opponent.

Looks like Langston:

I have never heard of them before but they are an NAIA team in Oklahoma and have a pretty nice stadium:

So what we're looking at is this:

Langston
CSU-Pueblo
at Wyoming
Northern Iowa
Southern Utah
at Sacramento State
Idaho State
UC Davis
BYE
Montana State
at North Dakota
at Northern Arizona
Cal Poly

I think it's a really good idea to get a home game under our belts before the CSU-Pueblo game. :thumb:

If Lobato has a slow start like has the past two seasons, we are in big trouble. If he plays like he usually does towards the end of each season, we should be fine.

It'll help that he won't be adapting to a new offense. I think that was a big part of his problem the last two years.

Did a game there in 1999, when I was covering Peru State (NE). Nice stadium. In the middle of a field, lies this stadium, though it looks like they've done a nice bit of upgrading things in the past 14 years (geez, has it been THAT long?). The town itself is almost a ghost town. Amazingly odd trip.

Here's your historical note: this is a HBCU, established as the alternative to Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) for non-whites. The resources are dramatically limited, including being in an afterthought conference (think Great West for NAIA football). Mike Garrett, the former USC AD & Heisman Trophy winner, is their AD currently (!)

Holy cow! I did a search on Langston Oklahoma. Town population (2010 Census) is only 1,724. It's like they stuck a University in Julesburg, Colorado.

That and he hasn't had a consistent running game to support the passing game. TD came in late and has performed great, but other than that it's been horrible. I also suspect Darius Graham will come in as a true freshman and will compete for a back-up spot.
