2015 Recruits

Recruiting in the conference is really picking up.

I would assume with the implosion of the WAC and it's epic fall that the Big Sky programs are now picking up the players that would have gone to the (good) WAC.

Dropped by the Dee yesterday. Not a single coach was in the house. All were out recruiting. The next few weeks is a critical time in this process. Right now, it is a gathering in effort. Over the next few weeks it will be a weeding out process. The final list may not look anything like the current one. Also, a player commitment can change things overnight. Even if that commitment is not to us and sometimes, even if it's not a player we were recruiting. As players fill open spots, it leaves others to make new plans.

Good luck, coaches! find that next Damian Lillard or Joel Bolomboy. We are all pulling for you. :thumb: :thumb:

2.7 Star 6-6 175 SF Roman Davis has been offered a scholarship. He has offers from Cal State Northridge, Princeton, Northern Arizona, Brown, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Boston College, and is receiving interest from Standford. He is from LA and plays at Winward School.

Personally, I really think the staff is looking to sign three players this fall. A PF/C, SF, and another combo type guard.

By the way Olds, McKay Cannon is a PG.

Help me understand this. We have one scholly available. What do you see in the cards to make you believe that there will be three newcomers to the program?

I look at our team and it's a talented one. I can see there might be some red shirts this year, but I'm struggling to figure out who might be leaving the program !

Thoughts? :dunce:

I hope nobody leaves the program. We have a very talented group in Ogden right now, but things happen. Kids leave or are "counselled" out of programs constantly. The coaches always have to be recruiting. It is better to be prepared than to be caught with your pants down around your ankles (something Catcat is a pro at). Also, if the coaches find a player who is better and can help the program grow, why not extend an offer? Also, you can sit players and find other financial avenues to pay for their academics while they sit. I believe that 3 players will be signed this fall. A big, most likely a PF, wing/tweener type, and a pure shooting guard.

The Wizard of Weber has, according to Verbal Commits, extended an offer to 6-3 SG Micheal Kolawole. He is from Garland TX and preps at Rowlett High School. He currently has offers from North Texas, Sam Houston State, Fairfield, Fresno, Lamar, UT-Arlington, Manhattan, Abilene Christian, and of course the might Wildcats of Weber State University.

Olds,

I agree...It is kinda making me scratch my head. But, there could be a number of good reasons why. First, lately, as you have pointed out to me on many occasions and I tend to ignore (sorry), our JC guys just haven't been on the same level as the guys being directly recruited out of high school. Golden, already, isn't being tabbed as a starter, and that might be an indication that he might not be here next year. I don't know, this is, of course, total conjecture. From what I have seen from Golden is pretty good. He could be the best pure scorer in the Big Sky next season, and a guy the Cats can get 10-14pts from each night. Yet, who knows, till the season starts. Next, there is always a concern with mission guys. Even though, I feel that Cannon is going to turn out into being one of the better guys the Cats have waited on in a while. He is just a fierce competitor. Finally, we have a lot of young guys in the program. I like to use the Terrence Dent example. A guy who some (Catcat and purplefogdog) put on the same level as another incoming recruit that year Damian Lillard. Well, Dent was gone after the first year. Might as well bring in some other guys who can participate and help out. And like you said, it motivates guys to keep giving their all.

I think that it will probably clear up a bit in October or November, after actual practices begin and there may be a commitment or two. Also, the coaches may be thinking along the lines of fall verses spring signing periods. In other words, they may be planning to sign one this fall and defer the other choices to the spring. :twocents:

I remember the year we recruited Wheelright, Fields and Brown at guard. I was wondering how they were all going to fit on the team. One year later two of the three were gone. 2 years later Wheels left the team as well and we lost the entire recruiting class.

That class of Wheelright, Fields, and Brown had great potential. I feel that it hurt us more losing Brown than the other two. Fields and Wheels were physically talented, but they did not have the maturity or intellect of Mike Brown. And, Mike had the whole package. Mike has a lot more going for him than just basketball, and that is probably what contributed to his leaving the program. I think that he would have helped us a lot. :coffee:

Don't know about the complete package but I was as excited for Fields as anyone I could remember. It was a huge disappointment that it didn't work out with him.

Fields was an extremely talented player and seemed to come from a very good family. He just turned out to be a kid who wanted things handed to him. He didn't want to work for anything. That was a huge learning experience for everyone involved. I think we all expected great things from him and with a little different attitude by him or a little different approach from the coaches, it just might have worked out. Same with Mike Brown. :coffee:

Another recruit offered.

Meh, I don't want a player-- especially in Weber's basketball program-- that serves two masters. It rarely works out well and I want focused players that can keep stepping Weber into a better and better program.

Yes. It is a difficult thing to do, play two sports in college. However, there are a few who have pulled it off. I wouldn't rule it out. As I understand it, it counts as both a football scholarship and a basketball scholarship. So, there is no real savings for either program. The negatives are that there are quite a few overlaps in playing and training. A player would need to miss a little from both teams or a lot from one or the other. I don't think that it would fly with many coaches. The more feasible thing is to play 4 years of one sport and one year of the other. That set up has worked a lot more often. :coffee:

Nate Grimes...it doesn't say that Weber has officially offered, but I think the Cats are trying to get this guy. He is a 3 Star guy from Las Vegas. He is a 6-8 SF. He has a lot of offers. I'm kinda shocked he is only a 3 Star dude, with all of the offers he has.

Also the Cats have offered: Juwan Williams and are also looking at Eden Ewing

You can add Travis Fuller, a 6'8'' combo forward from San Diego, CA. He is also being heavily recruited.

The list is still in the building process. That might go on for another week or two. After that, we will start to line up visits or get commitments. :thumb: :thumb:

We sign a high percentage of our visitors. So, not just anybody gets a visit.

Players are starting to commit to schools on a regular basis now. I suspect that we may be getting a commitment soon, or at least get a much clearer view of where our recruiting is going. There have been a couple of guys drop off our radar due to committing to other programs or removing us from their list of destinations. With only one open scholarship, I expect that we would be a bit picky and could wait until spring to sign anybody, unless we get the right commitment soon. :coffee:

No way that Rahe waits till next Spring. He is going to sign, at least, two guys this Fall. I know we only have one spot, but recent trends indicate that, at least, 1 scholarship player will not be back next year. Also, you can always red-shirt certain players and I believe, can provide some other type of financial assistance. Compliance?? Anyway, Rahe will get his guys as soon as possible. Roman Davis and one of the big three would be great (PF's: Paul Thomas, Jalon Miller, or Jordan Dallas). Hell, I'm convinced that another SG would be signed too...Riley Court or Malek Harwell (Armani Collins would be pretty sweet too).
