2016 Recruits

The coaches must have a good idea of who they are going to bring in this fall. Most of the new offers coming out are for the following year. I agree with you, that they will try to get one or two missionary kids and sign two or three players this fall. The emphasis seems to be on bigs for this years class and both for next year.

We seem to be going head to head with Montana for several of our recruits. More so than most years. :coffee:

I'm kinda curious to see who the coaches bring in. In the past there have been a couple of guys visi, who were under the radar. Jeremiah Jefferson, Joel Bolomboy, and Kyle Tresnak were all guys who were brought in that most of us knew nothing about. I'm sure coach has a wildcard up his sleeve and we might get another surprise visit. As for visits...who knows what is going to happen. It is definitely going to be interesting.

One that fits the 'under the radar' description is Bryce Cheney. Nobody is recruiting that kid and yet he seems to have D1 athletic ability and good ball skills. He is a bit thin, but so are a lot of HS kids. At any rate, our coaches have seen something in him that they like. I keep going back to Lillard and how he was also 'under the radar'. Recruiting is not always an exact science. Coaches are often trying to project what a player will look like 2 or 3 years down the road. It can go both ways. It's even harder to project when you throw a mission in there. So many things can happen over that time away from everything. Some are good and some are not. :coffee:

I'm all for bringing in Rivas, as long as he is a wing player with range. If he is a 6'6''ish power forward, with no range, then didn't we just get rid of one just like that and that one was a JC All American. I have not seen Pablo play and really can't tell you if he is or isn't a wing potential. If he can handle the ball and shoot with range, then YES, bring him in. Otherwise, go get a freshman with potential. Pablo sounds like a great kid, but at the end of the day we need players who can contribute or at least have the potential to contribute in the years to come. I'm not a fan of 6'6''ish, slender, power forwards. :yikes:

I have a feeling that Pablo Rivas would be coming to Weber to play the 3, but he plays primarily the 4 at Sheridan. Granted, a stretch 4; yet, still a 4. I do like his ability to play with his back towards the basket as well as being able to stretch a defense with his shooting ability. Rahe could pull everyone out and have him post up shorter guards in the league.

We got rid of a 6'3 power forward that was somehow listed at 6'6. A 6'6 player can play a little PF at our level. We learned that 6'3 not so much.

That is why I said "ish". We have also learned that being listed as 6'6'' means that you are at least 6' tall. It almost never means that you are actually 6'6''. I don't trust those listings for one second. That is why I made the comment in the first place. He looks athletic, but I need to see him play, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of video on him.

Can anybody help me with that? Also, I would like to see his shooting stats. I read that he shot 54% from the field last year, but what did he shoot from 3, or from the line? What are his assist numbers? Turnovers?

I want to know if he can be a wing player. If he can't, then get a bigger PF. That is all I am saying. I don't even care if a 6'6''ish PF is OK in the BSC. We need to be better than that. :twocents:

This is some stuff I posted on him a while back.

Absolutely nobody, in the BSC, is going to play us man to man. Pulling every one out and letting a small PF take on a smaller guard just will not work. Only if we can force them to come out and play us, can that be effective, and that will take some good outside shooting and solid ball handling. Some things that we lacked last year, and want to improve on this year.

Your links aren't working.

I cut them short when I pasted them again in my last post on this thread. Originally, I posted them on page two of this thread. They all work.

OK. Here are his freshman year stats from Sheridan.

Points - Over 14 per game - good

Rebounds - just under 7 per game - good

Shooting - 53.7% - good

3 Point Shooting - 31% - poor

Free Throw Shooting - 66% - poor

Assists - 1 per game - poor

Assist to TO ratio - nearly 1 to 1 - OK

Steals - about 1 per game - OK

I still haven't seen him play, but his stats say that he is a smaller than 6'6'' power forward, and not a wing player. He is not a stretch 4 at all. He is a post player. His HS stats back that up as well.

I'm not sure how it will work out but olds, we will play you guys man to man...that is Katz's philosophy on defense and he won't change now...I'm not saying we will play exclusively man to man but the majority of the time we will be in man to man....

You are right. We will see man D. However, I bet we see zones at least 70% of the time. At least until we prove that it is not going to work against us. Some teams will zone even when we are beating it, just to keep their bigs out of foul trouble. I suspect that Braxton and Bolomboy will draw a lot of fouls. They may commit a lot of fouls as well.

Sac; We are just like you guys on D. Randy thinks that playing a zone is, some how, cheating.

Bryce Cheney committed to Texas Rio Grand Valley. Ours and UTEPs offers must have been 'wait and see' offers, and he wanted some sort of guarantee. If he had waited, he may have had a better offer. Oh well, he is probably going to where he can contribute right away. Good for him. :thumb: :thumb:

Offers are NOT created equally. :twocents:

I've taken a closer look at the guys on our recruiting list. 3 or 4 of those guys are potential missionaries right out of HS. Given that, I think we could sign 3 guys this fall, if we get commitments from the right guys. Also, the more I look at these guys, the more I like each one of them. They could all be outstanding players in our system. The same can be said for the guys we are lining up for the 2017 class. I don't see any super stars in the bunch. Just a lot of solid players with great potential.

The future recruiting looks good to me. We are in a position of strength for future recruiting and things could work out quite well. I am very optimistic. :thumb: :thumb:

I like your position on our recruits. No, none of the guys right now are "burning" up the recruiting boards, all have multiple offers and some have offers from major program, but no matter who they are, all of them are extremely solid, cogent, and talented basketball players. There are a couple of players who are a step above, right now, yet, all the players have a great deal of potential.

Of course, I'm sure there are a couple that are being recruited that we don't know much about.

Nice video of Nzekwesi. He has gotten taller.

2017 recruit, Samuta Avea, looks like a good prospect.

Sayeed Pridgett commits to Montana. :ohno: Between last season, this years schedule, and now this, I couldn't be much more frustrated with the basketball program than I am right now.
