2016 Recruits

I'm hoping that Weber can land both Spencer Johnson and Wyatt Lowell. I think those were the two guys who were visiting this past weekend. I've heard from a number of individuals in the "know" that Johnson is as close to a hidden gem as you can get nowadays. He had a remarkable AAU Summer, but nobody wanted to go after him because he was an automatic mission guy. I know that UVU and SUU are both after him. I was told that BYU has over-recruited and if they didn't they would have given him a scholarship in an instant.

I'm with you on this, Tal. I would love to see one or both of these guys sign with us. They both are quite skilled, but need a few years for their bodies to catch up with their skill level. Missions will probably do them a lot of good as players and as young men. Also, that would take care of the majority of the 2018 recruiting class. I'm wondering if either of them is close to making a commitment yet?

I am also hoping to see Emmanuel get cleared to play and join us next year. He is a really good player, but an even better person. He would be a great addition to our community. I would also like to see his younger brother follow in his footsteps and become a Wildcat. :coffee:

Maybe it's time to just assume that neither one of them is coming, and move on to other recruiting strategies. We were looking at both of them for the 2018 class anyway. We have two years to work on that class. The coaches should be spending more time on the 2017 class right now.

As a fan, it is hard to think about a year that you don't sign anyone. However, that may be the best thing for us this year and it may be what eventually happens.

I don't know how the coaches feel about it, but my feelings are that if a player is unsure about wanting to play for us, we should move on to someone who actually wants to play for us. To me, it is a non issue because we do not need to sign anyone for 2016. :coffee:

Word is that Rahe will be visiting Dublin High to watch Timmy Falls next Wednesday...this week Falls is being watched by UC Davis and San Jose State....my son is a teacher at Dublin High and has had Falls in a class....he says he seems to be a good kid, always has his homework done, not a genius but a good student...

Made unofficial visits to Weber and Montana earlier this summer.

Huge focus on 2017. Looking to see, with an extra year to recruit, what the coaches can get. Missionaries are really the only guys the coaches would be able to sign for 2016; especially if our only scholarship available has already been claimed by another previously committed player. But I will say this, I think both missionary kids could be good contributors for the Cats in the future. Definitely hard to tell. Just because they sign in 2016 doesn't mean they are locked up in 2018 or beyond.

Interesting thing on Verbal Commits this morning, Nzekwesi is now a 2016 recruit who has a LOI with Weber. Compliance could you chime in on this, if you can? Is Nzekwesi, even if he is at a PREP School, still a Weber commit? If yes, why? If no, why? http://verbalcommits.com/schools/weber-state" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They, Verbal Commits, still haven't corrected McKay Cannon, but we all know he is a freshman on our team. Will someone tell Brett Hein that Cannon has been back and a part of the team since May. He was always going to come back. His twitter makes it sound like it was a HUGE surprise. :thumb: No matter, I do appreciate Hein's writing and updates. Good stuff!

The way I understand Emmanuel's situation, he is still committed to WSU and is still signed. He is reclassified in the 2016 class and will need to sign again with WSU for that class. However, he is a signed player for the year and can not be recruited by any other NCAA schools. I believe that our coaches and administration is working hard to help him get his student visa to be eligible to play next year. Verbal Commits has it correct. They do need to correct Cannon's class. :coffee:

I assume Hein's twitter is Weber HQ. If so, also tell him the scholarship issue was resolved when Hunter lost his. Dude needs to follow this forum more. He also must of missed the team being introduced at the alumni game.

Those tweets were from a long time ago. I'm not sure that his twitter account is still active. Also, Verbal Commits has some issues with how its Twitter feed is updating. It hasn't been working right for nearly a month. Because he relies on twitter so much, I'm not sure that I would trust the info on that site until he can get it fixed. :coffee:

I'm not commenting on Emmanuel's situation, but this is probably useful for you:

:thumb: Thank you. Extremely helpful.

With our latest commitment, we may not be actively recruiting for the 2016 class. We could sign another missionary kid, but that would tie up all of our 2018 scholarships. It would have to be the right player or I don't think we would pull the trigger and tie up that last 2018 scholarship. The only thing that might change things would be some kind of a transfer or career ending injury. I hope that neither of those things happens.

I feel that our recruiting efforts will be turned almost exclusively to the 2017 recruiting class. That class could include anywhere from 3 to 5 signees, depending on missions and transfers. So far, I am liking all of the guys I have heard about. There are two or three potential missionaries in the group. It seems to take a bit more planning when you get multiple missionaries out at any given time. :coffee:

Coach has said a bunch of times that he isn't the smartest guy in the world. Makes sense to only have 1 missionary, per class, out at a time. We wouldn't want coach to get too confused. LOOOOOL

On a serious note, Randy doesn't just sign guys. He gets the best he can. He has said a handful of times that he wants to recruit Utah kids, but that the "type" of player needed to keep Weber at the level we want it at, and the type that will help the Cats get to that next level aren't really available in bunches here in Utah. According to Coach, there are, on good years, five or six DI guys in Utah. Most of the time those guys end up at one of the big 3 and don't really give Weber a look. It is nice feeling knowing that Jared Loveridge, the recently graduated Haws kid, Collette at USU, and others had Weber on their list, but none of them ended up here. Randy, wanted each of them and made a play for them, but it didn't happen for the Cats. They ended up elsewhere. Randy doesn't waste time with projects or guys who are lukewarm. He goes after the best player he can get and if that guy is in Maine, then that is where Randy will go. So, with that being said, I am really excited about Riley Court and now Spencer Johnson's commitments. Both are local, high-character, kids, extremely talented basketball players, with high IQ, and will be able to contribute right away. I'm excited to see what both can do for the Cats.

I believe that Court will be part of the 2017 freshman class and Johnson would start in 2018. Depending on red shirt years, they may get three or four years playing together and a couple of those could be with John, Cannon, and Jefferson. Our guard line is solid for a while. for the next couple of years we still have Jeremy, Rashaud, Ryan, and Dusty. If that isn't enough, there are others waiting in the wings. :notworthy: :notworthy:

Wyatt Lowell visited Colorado last weekend and UVU/USU this weekend. I find it interesting that USU and UVU are sharing visits now.

It used to be true that a player could have up to 6 official visits. If that still holds, he has one or two left. Colorado is waiting on the decision of a 4.7 star guy. Wtatt, reportedly, has an offer from Oklahoma State, among others. It sort of looks like he wants to make all of his visits prior to making his choice. I wonder what will happen if he commits to someone and they tell him to hold off for a week or two. :coffee:

I don't blame him for wanting to take all of his visits. He is an automatic mission kid so he has time, and technically, from what I understand, if something changes while he is gone, he can recommit when he comes home to another school. Personally, I think the NCAA should make it a rule that automatic mission kids original commitment is for their first year of college, be that before or after a mission (what do you think compliance?). Wyatt visited Weber with Spencer Johnson (from what I heard, Johnson visited USU, UVU, SUU, and an unofficial to Utah and BYU; and the Cats got him. :thumb: ) and if he has a couple more visits that he wants to take great, but as Olds has stated in the past, delaying a decision can really hurt a player. Schools that are highly interested will pass because they get the impression that you aren't interested.

On another note, I have read online that Tim Fuller C/PF, 6-9 210, from Gilbert Arizona will be visiting Weber State this weekend. He isn't flashy like Wyatt and he doesn't have the leg strength that Dejon Davis (who visited, I believe last weekend or two weekends ago, it is hard to keep up, especially in a year like this one), but is cut from the same mold as two other Wildcat greats Steve Panos and Kyle Tresnak. He has a nice jump shot from 15' and has great moves playing with his back towards the basket. He is an automatic mission kid, but that will only help him as a big. He might not be done growing and depending one where he goes, he could put some more weight on  . Being a big though, he probably is an automatic red shirt too. If could take him a year to get back into shape. Rahe admitted once that he was about to cut Mahoney then suddenly at the end of January Mahoney got his legs back and started to play better and became far more consistent, that was a definite lesson for coach. Give bigs time. They need it. Fuller has a visit planned with USF for the 22 - 24. If things go well this weekend, hopefully we hear that he won't be go to the Bay at the end of the month. :thumb:

Tim Fuller is the younger brother of Josh who spent one year at Weber and then left for Dixie. Nice that Tim is interested in Weber even after his big brother got no playing time here and headed out of town.

I know that Josh was well liked by everyone in and around the program. I think that he just wanted to go where he could get more playing time. He is a great young man and an asset to whatever community he is in. It has been obvious to everyone on this forum that Josh was always one of my favorite players and I stand by him and his game. What a great family.

I wasn't suggesting anything about Josh. My point was that it's likely that Josh might not have had the highest view of Weber State and its coaches after not getting any playing time here. Clearly Josh (and his parents) have a high view of Weber despite that, or else Tim would not have made a recruiting visit here. That speaks highly of the coaches and the program they've built, I think.
