2020 RECRUITING

There’s no real heir apparent to Thomson’s throne, this makes perfect sense - and might be the guy Taylor wants to have with him as they solidify the Hornets as a perennial power?
My thoughts exactly, I’m sure coach Taylor sold him on this as well. Go to UNLV and have no idea where you are in the pecking order or know you have a legit shot to be the man in a high powered offense to showcase your skills, no brainer. And remember, Thompson gets hurt sometimes.

And Dunniway will be a JR. in 2020, available to spot start if needed, but pretty much everyone agrees we need a long term QB in the program...

It looks like Yaro doesn't want to be grey-shirted and that's the reason why he didn't sign with Utah State right away. According to his interview, both UNLV and Boise State going after him (probably with the same grey-shirt offer). I think he commits to one of those programs if that grey-shirt offer turns into a red-shirt offer which is pretty common. If it doesn't, then I see him taking the full-ride to Sac. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other FCS programs that tries to get in on the action late with him. A 3 star quarterback always has good value either as a back up at the FBS level or a 3 year starter at the FCS.

I still can't believe Dunniway will only be a Junior this year. At least we have him as a reliable injury replacement/gap year start after Thomson leaves this season

I’ll also predict that we sign 3 star SDE DeShawn Lynch from Folsom High who has 8 FBS offers.

That'd be amazing. As late as last Thursday, Brandon Huffman was predicting that he'll stay home and play for the Hornets. But it's looking like San Jose State is ramping up their efforts to get him, but with offers from the likes of Oregon and Nebraska, you never know.

Yep, read the same thing from Brandon. How is San Jose State ramping up their efforts? He knows the Sac State coaching staff or most of them and hopefully this sways him over fricken SJS. I’m not sure why he would turn down Oregon or Nebraska, maybe depth, grey shirt, partial scholarship, who knows.

I think Yaro Duvalko ends up at UNLV.

Apparently he was very wow'd by their facilities and the new stadium they'll play in, along with the Raiders.

https://247sports.com/Article/UNLV-Rebels-QB-Yaro-Duvalko-Utah-State-Boise-State-Sacramento-State-recruiting-142806569/

Don't forget about that HUGE factor. I'd expect to see UNLV start nabbing some really nice recruits over the next few years. What kid wouldn't be wow'd by a near 2 Billion dollar stadium????

What other college team has the advantage of playing home games in a stadium like that? The U of Miami shares with the Dolphins at the newly renovated Hard Rock Stadium. And I believe some of the Texas schools play at Jerry Jones Stadium from time to time, but not all their home games.

It should be a pretty nice recruiting advantage for UNLV. And they've got a new HC from our local area here.
I already read the article before and disagree with you, he had a visit with the Hornets on January 31st, after UNLV, being able to be groomed my an ex NFL QB in Troy Taylor and probably at better route for him to start playing then UNLV, where they already have other good quarterbacks in front of him. Also, right after the visit at Sac State, two experts are predicting 100% that he comes here, hmm, maybe one of them had a chat with him. anything could change, but my gut goes with the two experts in this field who predicted it.

Brandon Huffman is a National Recruiting Editor and pick percentage correct is 96%, and the other person is a Utah State insider where Yaro had originally committed to, these guys know something. They both made these predictions on February 1st, right after his visit here.

Listen, I appreciate your enthusiasm and reasoning. I’d love it if a talented player decided to forgo a program with drastically superior facilities and stadium. And I’m not saying it can’t or won’t happen. I have no inside info. But I do believe the odds are long and your suffering from wishful thinking.

The “experts” you cited don’t mean anything. Duvalko also spoke with those that wrote that article. Unless these recruiting experts are part of his family, they don’t know anything. Because he’s not gonna tell them where he’s going. He might not even be decided yet.

These ‘experts’ make predictions all the time and are quite often wrong. So please spare me that reasoning.

Again, not saying he won’t end up at SAC. I’ll just believe it when I see it. When kids like him are recruited by FBS programs like Utah State, UNLV and Boise State, they typically end up there.

That all said, I hope you are right and I’m wrong and the kid ends up in green and gold.

This would be a surprise and possibly a very good get. I’m a bit torn because Lynch wasn’t as dominant a player as I expected him to be this past season. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I hope a player with 8 FBS offers ends up in SAC. Especially with a staff that really knows him. But I’m just not sure he’s as good as I once thought he’d be. But this staff might get that potential out of him.

Okay Debbiedowner, that’s why they also show a percentage of how they pick, how well they do. Yes, they can be wrong like anyone else, but they do have more insight than you do. Everyone knows another school can come in and say things to the student and family to change their mind, happens all the time. I wish to think a little bit more positive than you, you’re suffering from being a Hornet fan too long lol. Things are a little different now, winning program and good coaches have a lot to do with that. You can stay in the past with that mentality.

Look at Patrick Dean, the dude had FBS offers, he chose Sac State, our meager facilities, lol over other schools. He had his reasons too for coming here, they allowed him to play two sports. Everyone has a different reason for choosing the school they attend, and there not all about facilities, so get over that loser mentality.

You can tell how much a program is going after a certain player by the number/level of recruiters they put on a guy (just from what I've seen from P5 programs). Alonzo Carter is a pretty influential recruiter for SJSU and he's one of the guy recruiting Lynch according to 247. They also have Scott White with him to try to get Lynch. I remember Lynch Junior year, when Folsom was at the top of their game (also when he was getting all the elite program offers), Lynch was rated as a 4 Star recruit...one it dropped down to a 3 star ranking after last season

I do agree with you here, didn’t have the best year, and probably the main reason we will probably get him. He is definitely worth the risk.

SJSU just removed half of their stadium seating. I believe it was condemned, but it will be awhile until they have the funds to replace. So, there is no grandeur in going to SJSU.

Believe it or not, I say Hornet Stadium with all its warts is better than SJSU stadium.

That’s good to hear, record wise, SJSU hasn’t had a good year since 2012. If I was choosing, part of my process would to play for winning team if possible, I just think it’s amazing in one year what coach Taylor has done here. Recruit good players, build a team that players want to play for and fight for to win, then others will take notice and want to come here too. Hopefully more people in community will get behind this team and start coming to games. Maybe I’m naive, but I see how Montana schools do things and would love if someday we had that kind of support. Montana State has signed some very nice recruits this season and there is no reason we shouldn’t as well.

I think they've secured majority of the money it requires to revamp their football facilities (including their stadium)...plus, even as a bottom feeder of the G5 for the past decade with the exception of that one David Fales year, they still play in the MWC under the FBS umbrella. That means something a little extra to some hs kids
https://sjsuspartans.com/news/2019/4/22/groundbreaking-ceremony-set-for-new-sjsu-football-operations-center.aspx

As for the December signing period is concerned, we will know if we pick up two high level 3 star recruits in impact positions with multiple FBS offers tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!! :thumb:

I really want the QB, but either way I think will be a pretty good recruiting class, addressed a lot of needs in the secondary and a kicker, no more having to go for it on fourth down every time because we don’t trust our kicking game. I really hope coach Taylor let’s the guys start return kickoffs and punts, rather than fair catch every time, missing out on a lot of yards this way, yeah you will have fumbles sometimes, but sometimes you return it all the way.

Again, I surely hope you and the recruiting predictor are right. Sign me up.

I know you have been a following this team for a long time and seen a lot of stuff, were on the same team. I have known Troy since middle school, so I followed him closely at Folsom, Eastern Washington, then Utah, hence the passion I have about Sac State. The narrative is already starting to change, it doesn’t happen overnight, but is happening more quickly than I imagined.

There’s no guarantees with recruits, they can change their mind quickly, just hope we get that qb signed tomorrow.

Are we looking at any kids in the Transfer portal? I could see where we could fill a few immediate needs.
That’s a great question, I noticed a lot of the other Big Sky teams are grabbing talent from the FBS portal, I haven’t seen us do it this year and wondered if we ever do it. Hopefully someone on this board can answer that.

We did get Donny Long from Riverside Jr college, he was originally signed by MSU last year before withdrawing from them.

Looks like coaches on Twitter are expecting a big haul tomorrow, historic. We shall see - most important signing day probably ever for SAC... let’s see how real the Taylor Effect is!

You seem to have some inside knowledge, so I'll throw this out there. Heard any rumors on offering QB Justin Lamson from Oak Ridge? Only a JR, but should get plenty of attention next year. I know Taylor and crew have been to some of his games. Local talent equals more local interest in the program.
