It is no secret the cash situation Eagle athletics in. Previous coaches concentrated on in state kids because their tuition is much less than out of state recruits. Has that changed? It appears 1/3 or less recruits are Washington kids.

Looks like EWU picked up a Middle Linebacker from Nevada:

Lamin Touray 6"0 235 lbs.

Where is Joshua wood? Jaelin Green?

If they havent faxed their letter in yet only tells me they aren't 100% on board and are hoping for a better offer.

I would expect in the case of Wood you are correct. It was announced that his HS team will be playing in a showcase in Vegas that will be nationally televised. I'm sure he is waiting to perform and see what offers may come. In the case of the Green his twitter along with his high schools twitter stated he would be signing today with EWU at 3:30 at a signing party.

This was a big time need for us.

Anybody catch some of the big commits to Jackson State? I don't know if this is good or bad, but this is the first time we've seen an FCS team actively try to recruit guys for only a year or two and then have them transfer out to a bigger program. You figured it was only a matter of time before someone tried their hand at that kind of basketball-esque "one and done" recruiting in football, and it happened faster than I would've expected.

If you're Jackson State, what do you have to lose, I guess?

Head Coach at Jackson State is Deion Sanders...not surprised.

*It's the new game in town...portal and transfers.

6000 players in the portal…it’s the new way bigger programs will recruit. You’ll receive a kid who is already stronger and knows what student/athlete life is like…

Sanders also won the Ediie Robinson Award for FCS Coach of the Year...said he signed the #1 recruit in Ameica and may have a top #20 class in the nation...too bad they don't play in the FCS playoffs...

Yeah, but it seems kinda self serving. He's bringing in kids to play a year or two and then have them transfer. If a kid is good enough for the NFL, that model will probably work. But it's brutal on the actual educational aspect to bounce from school to school. Maybe that's the World we live in now. I assume this is predicated on Deion Sanders just trying to make a good team for another year and then going to a bigger program himself.

That would beg the question, would you want Best and Co reaching out to players recruited by bigger schools to come to Eastern for a year or two and then leave for a bigger program? It's a scary model to try that method. i think I'd rather try to forge Eagles for their whole college career.

I don't know if this is the model or not. JSU signed 6 players, 3 of them transfers. He took the #1 kid away from his alma mater FSU. Coach Sanders has both sons on the team, starting QB and DB. Who knows what he has in mind. Would anything Deion does surprise anybody?

Guess who said this.

“We feel that a lot of guys in this state really fit what we want to do here.”

5 of the 10 signees with the Washington State Cougars are in-state kids. A Pac 12 school with virtually unlimited funds can recruit 1/2 of their players in-state while:
EWU;
2 of the 6 signees are in-state.
FYI tuition for residents is 1/2 of out of state students, but we've got plenty of money :x

Looks like Cunningham (JC LB) signed elsewhere. I'm hoping that Best misspoke yesterday about losing Cale Lindsay, but with the push for transfer LB's I think we may be pretty light there going into next season. Glad we got the big transfer yesterday. I agree Clawman, kind of eerie that we lost sight of our in-state kids a bit. I'm hoping we get more in the second signing period.

I'm wondering what the anticipated size of this class was supposed to be. We lost a lot of seniors on senior day, possibly a few more leaving for grades, personal reasons, "better opportunities", but on the other hand it was the Covid year with a lot of hangover in the program with the extra year. It will be interesting to see how things look in the next couple of months.
