Athletic Director Candidates

Solid list of candidates. Take note, this is why you hire a firm to conduct a national search. Aside from Fulp, the other 3 would be a significant step up in experience, knowledge, and proven success. I like Massari and Orr the most, and it will take good money to entice either of them to come on board. Wickstrom could probably be brought on board for near bottom dollar given his time at Rivertucky. Fulp would definitely be a bottom dollar guy.

This hire will show exactly how serious Nelsen is about athletics. Let's hope he doesn't fuck this up.

Massari and Fulp have been Hornets before. Football guys that bring a wealth of proven experience. Facility enhancement is paramount, fund raising for long term big dollar donor/cornerstone supporters is important.

Orr has done wonderful things at private St. Mary's. But, he has built-in fundraising through the church, ala. Liberty, BYU, ND, etc. Can he crack the never done before crust of big Sacramento donors and 200K+ highly regionalized alumni? No football, means 'it' can work at a school to not have FB mentality.

Wickstrom is the dark horse. Runs a FBS school with half the budget of Sac State. Ok, its Louisiana, but he has built a new football stadium endzone and is stamped with MBA credentials. Didnt get much done at Riverside and seems to want out of ULM because of conflict with the school Prez. And the mosquitoes.

You get what you pay for. I think Nelson is wise enough to see the potential given the right person. Personality and synergies working together will be a big decision factor.

Don’t tell that to mr no resources guy, he wouldn't understand.

great pool of candidates.

Would pick the person who has the best plan to break ground on the Events Center
soon, and not 5 years from now, and bring all the rest of the sports facilities up to Div I competitive standards.

Cause once we are someday done with talking about sports facility issues at Sac State everything else will be up for discussion.

SDH... you brag about having intimate conversations with President Nelsen...show some balls and tell him to his face that you hope he doesn't [bleep] up this hire...

Anyone who has ever talked to him knows they don't need to tell him that...he is well aware...which is why he ponied up the resources ( ) for a national search to be done to bring in qualified candidates. Even the "worst" of the candidates is better than what we have, but there are a couple guys on the list who have the know-how to get us on the map.

I agree with SDH on his two top picks and with his comments regarding the Pres.

Anybody who has ever talked to him knows you would only make that comment behind his back using your keyboard.

There's a number one choice and three other guys. There was never a need for a national search if Mark Massari is interested and the university can compete with his current salary. It must be close are he wouldn't be down here going through the process.

Huh? No need for a national search?!? :? :dunce:

So had Nelsen made these moves that cost resources and only consulted with Massari and it falls through, then what? Scrounge at a local JC for some wannabe D1 guy to fill the role? Promote the nearest guy standing around…again? Scramble around and continue to shit the bed with no backup plan for the hiring of one of the highest paid positions on campus that is in charge of a $22M+ annual budget?

Wow you are utterly clueless.

What specific role does Macriss play in all of this? Will he be in charge of the academics, administration and personnel piece and the new AD is primarily in charge of PR/Fundraising, Macro outreach and branding along with ultimate hire/fire and financial responsibilities?

That probably dictates who is chosen and accepts.

Obviously team GPA is at an all time high across the program, 3.00+. Sac has good HC retention, conference tournament representation and the media output is light years ahead of what it was 10 years ago. It seems every team has a PR/boxscore after every game. That takes alot of HP to initially organize, implement and continues to refine itself. So, Macriss is above average in these traits and what Sac really needs is a charismatic fundraiser, energetic visionary facility builder and someone who can carry the rock the farthest up the hill.

Too bad Volek isnt 20yrs. younger.

Volek really wanted the job at one time, but that time has passed.

SDH...it almost isn't fun when you make it that easy. Your mouth must be REALLY sore.

It’s not hard when you throw weak ass excuses and display no cognitive skills over and over again. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. :coffee:

Exactly.

SDH...a guy with absolutely no sack, no experience in the areas he professes to be a genius and who talks tough from behind a keyboard. There's about four on the planet that buy into your BS. Keep trying to impress them from your mother's basement.

See that North Dakota, who is leving the Big Sky, has now won the berth to the NCAA basketball tourney after winning the Big Sky regular season title in basketball and in football. Amazing how North Dakota comes into the Big Sky a few years ago and wins big in football and basketball and is soon leaving the conference.

UND took home the Grand Slam of the Big Sky: the Big four revenue championships in fb, vb, wbb, and mbb, and also coaches of the year in all those sports. And hockey is by far our biggest revenue sport, as we are still the defending national Champs! And each of those sports should get even better next year, as sophomores played key roles on those teams. Mbb loses a main cog in Hooker, but Crandall is only a sophomore and growing in leadership.

I am sure the visible four have cycled through and the event was for visibility only. Not really any chance of these people being named the AD. It will come down to some obscure deputy AD at a Big Sky school. Given the amount of work required to get Sac up just to Di level facilities is overwhelming and a big turn off for most. 25 years as a DI school and every facility on campus is barely D2 capable.

Perhaps Sac should reconsider moving to D2? Save a ton of money and the school would be served best by its laughable facilities.
