Athletic Director Candidates

Full disclosure: I bought the PAM at Montana. I didn't know my younger kid was so dumb (at the time) to put it on when outside the locker room. Jon was in the Press Box and had no idea what was going on. Funny how everyone hangs on to this hilarious moment. I still remember Wanless telling ESPN that the "charges would never stick." By rule, this is a 5 yard penalty for the first offense and you have to change your jersey although it was never called because Montana never told the referees, but chose to take photos and disclose publicly. Double sided carpet tape to keep the jersey tight to the pads was also big at that time. Bought a lot of that at Home Depot! :)

Why would you bring PAM to Missoula to a football game and not expect it to be used for something other than cooking stick free omelets?
It was blown way out of proportion.

This happened my freshman year. I had a few football players in my english class. I told them I saw this on the ESPN ticker and all they did was shake their head.

HHD congrats to your son. :thumb:

OSH, that is correct. Congrats, you finally got one right.
We’ve rolled the dice with a JC guy before… a guy that you proclaim to be the worst Hornet coach ever. So now you want to go with a JC guy again? Typical OSH logic fail…not a shock to anyone here.

National search (via a consulting firm) coupled with a competitive D1 compensation package and the “who” part of the equation solves itself. It's that simple.

SDH, I have to respectfully debate your saying Jon is a "JC guy again." Sperbeck came in after coaching only at the JC level for 15 years with no D1 experience as a coach. Jon was a D1 guy for 11 years before he started coaching at the JC level. Big difference there. Experience in recruiting nationally while at Nebraska was invaluable as was being a recruiting coordinator at Sac State. D1 coaches who come to ARC looking for transfers are impressed that the practices are run just like a D1 school. There is a reason he has won over 75% of his games there. He had several offers to go to other Big Sky schools (i.e.: UC Davis, Portland State and Cal Poly) but turned them all down because he didn't want to move, but to say he's another "JC guy" understates his experience, especially versus the last "JC guy."

And for the record, I could care less if Sac State wants to talk to him or not. There are worse things than being a JC head coach for 25 or 30 years and leaving a great winning legacy.

But as I posted earlier, it was a blessing in disguise, so we all wish Sac State the best in the future. Now I'll open up my checkbook and even try and attend some games. I've missed being at the games and I've missed a lot of Hornet friends. Its good to have my Stinger up again!

He has D1 experience as a position coach and now HC experience at the JC ranks with impressive results. Congrats on him doing well at ARC. With all due respect to his accomplishments, the Hornet HC position “should”* garner interest from guys with D1/D2 head coaching and/or coordinator experience. So while OSH and other Hornet FB alums will lobby hard for Coach O and sell it as the end all be all, I think it would be shortsighted for Nelsen/Orr to not even consider their options...hence my reason for going with a coaching search. Unfortunately, this is where OSH’s cognitive shortcomings really shine as he fails to grasp this simple concept.

Going with a search does not preclude Coach O from throwing his hat in the ring. If he is the best candidate for the job and Orr picks him then great. We just don’t know the type of candidates interested until a search is done, but a D1 program with:
• an extremely supportive president
• that is funded at a level that puts them in the top half of the BSC
• in the 20th biggest media market
• with solid athletic facilities on par, if not better than your typical FCS program
• in a fertile recruiting area
should garner plenty of interest from well qualified candidates. How Coach O stacks up against those potential candidates remains to be seen.

And welcome back. :thumb:

*Assuming a competitive compensation package is offered…which is likely given Nelsen’s willingness to use resources to make moves to bring in people that are compatible with his vision for athletics.

I can't speak to the football budgets alone, but USA Today reports on NCAA revenues by schools and I searched the Big Sky Conference. We are number three and just barely behind Montana. These are numbers from 2014-2015.

This is the website URL: http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances

RK SCHOOL CONF TOTAL REVENUE TOTAL EXPENSES TOTAL SUBSIDY % SUBSIDY

117 North Dakota Big Sky $24,287,775 $24,295,578 $10,603,550 43.66

203 Southern Utah Big Sky $11,039,942 $10,562,560 $8,132,253 73.66

CalPoly and UC Davis report through the Big West but here are their numbers which would put them number one and two in the Big Sky:

76 California-Davis Big West $33,167,105 $31,870,332 $25,705,371 77.50
109 California Poly Big West $26,291,182 $24,941,566 $19,933,747 75.82

We also have more sports then many of these other schools. So does make it hard to compare them just sheer numbers.

https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/

The USAToday site is good, but it is 'investigative' journalism so believe what you will. The link above is the official Federal Government report, which I think will be the most accurate.

Sac State has 21 varsity sports. EWU and Montana have like 14 and 16 respectively. Which is the bare minimum required for this division. Most BSC schools have significantly less sponsored varsity sports than Sac.

Some figures for football:

Sac State: $3.6M expense, $2M revenue
MSU: $6.5M expense, $8M revenue
UM: $5M expense, $8.5M revenue
EWU: $4.6M expense, $4.7M revenue

MSU probably has a higher figure because of stadium debt service after their renovation. But this is predominately effected by attendance, or lack of it for Sac State.

Since Sac State has the lowest college tuition in the nation, these numbers are not proportional as to the true expense/revenue of each BSC department.

If Jonny O is the best candidate after a national vetting, then good for him and the Hammerheads. He might be the best candidate, but I agree with SDH, that if we are going to invest in the next five years, lets evaluate all comers.

Interesting how the assumption is there will be a need for a search ... National or not ...

That is interesting, let's start the prediction for the year.

Idaho- Lost (Much improved Team)
IW- Win
Weber- Win (Home Game, this Hornets got it)
Southern Utah (they are on way down)
Idaho State Win
EWU- Lost (Very interesting game, see what happens)
Idaho State- Win
North Dakota -Lost
NAU- Lost
UNC- Win
Cal Poly- Win I'm going to go with this, they are falling
Davis- the 7th win. Playoffs Causeway. Extended Contract

OSH, that site GCM posted is where the numbers come from. All budget info is available to the public (at least for public institutions). It doesn't hurt to use google, even a dimwit like you can figure it out.

BTW the Feds don't have the last FY info yet so those budget numbers are for the 2014 (FY15) season.

IF THE JOB BECOMES OPEN nobody will need to a national search to Jon Osterhout, Angus McClure or Darren Arbet.

Good idea, let's limit the candidates to Hornet alums only. What could possibly go wrong?

:dunce:

A legit search will need to be done, otherwise why even bother...of course no one expect you to comprehend this simple concept.

Someone needs to tell me how that "national search" BS has EVER paid off in the area of athletic directors. And, I have never have been clear on how you can figure out what's best for the program from that drive-thru window you work at.

great research and facts.

Had no idea Sac State had the lowest tuition in the nation.

And makes sense that UC Davis has an athletic budget $11 million higher than Sac with tuition at UC Davis being twice that at Sac.

Did figure that Sac was right at the top of the Big Sky all sport schools with Sac having far and away the most sport teams. Sac slightly behind Montana and North Dakota on top with their hockey teams and all their sports soon to leave the Big Sky.

Yeah, we wouldn't ever want a Sac State alum to be the head coach, what could possibly go wrong?

We would never want a guy like Bob Mattos again. I mean look what went wrong with guys like that at the helm in 1988! Besides look who was on that team or coaching staff...what could possibly go wrong? I mean they went 8-2, had the nation's top offense and made it to the D2 semi-final game.

Bob Mattos
Mike Clemons
Greg Knapp
Tree Plumbtree
Mark Massari
Dave Hoskins
Angus McClure
Darren Arbet
Tony Trosin

Instead let's bring in people from outside Sac State. Things couldn't possibly go wrong... oh, that's right we've done that for the past 22 years. Just saying, you could argue this from both sides.

I'm actually a Portland State alum and my high school coach was Mouse Davis. Jerry Glanville wasn't really the answer but a guy born across the river in Vancouver, WA has done pretty well. Barneyball surprised the world in in 2015. Sure, 2016 was a setback, but they had two players die tragically in the off season and they remained competitive despite over 29 players being injured that year.

But hey, maybe we are getting ahead of ourselves. We shall see what the fall of 2017 brings soon.

I wish the Hornets nothing but the best. The players and coaches will have to earn a good season by making every day count between today and next season. You have to earn respect, you never deserve it.

I'm going to echo the point that there is no need for any kind of search for a new HC as long as Coach Sears has the job and is preparing his team to be successful. Jody deserves every chance to be successful now that he and his staff are finally competing on an even playing field.
Having said that, people with no experience in athletics tend to minimize the importance of what it takes to recruit quality classes year after year. The most important issue is trust and that cannot developed in a year or two. When I suggested names of coaches who have played and/or coached at Sac State I'm talking about men who have quality reputations in the coaching community. Coaches who can come into the program with relationships that can immediately have a positive impact on recruiting and quickly gather support of the program that no outsider could ever accomplish.

What about the trust that the program has for its fans?

Mattos was the last person to get the rock over the line. That was a lifetime ago, I dont really care who is hired/retained, just start winning and get the fans back. No trust with the fans forever having a losing, laughable program isnt the way to go either.

Mattos had a great reputation, he was trusted and he had multiple outstanding coaches/recruiters who were able to build off of those qualities. Recruiting better talent will be the most effective way to solve the losing of losing.
