Athletic Director Candidates

I’m not quite getting the leap from just being on the roster at a time when this program actually did something notable 30 years ago as being good enough qualifications to be given the nod at HC. Ironically enough Nelsen just passed up someone on that roster in his AD selection. Maybe the torches and pitchforks should he headed towards his office…or maybe he just went with who he felt was the better person suited for the job...or maybe he just wanted a guy who would be above the flawed groupthink we are seeing playout on a fan message board.

If there is a Hornet alum out there with the chops to be in the running for the next HC then the search will identify that candidate. I don’t quite understand the opposition to a search other than it might identify an “outsider” with better quals that is interested in the gig who would, in theory, take the HC gig that is ordained for the alleged anointed alum.

The new admin owes it to the alums, fans, students, and every other vested interest in Hornet athletics to do its due diligence in finding the best coach for the job. Going with an anointed candidate without considering the options would be negligent at worst, foolish at best.
 
SDH, I really don't disagree about them casting a wide net when the time is appropriate. Sac State should hire the very best coach they can whether he is an alum or not. It wouldn't be appropriate if they didn't, but I just wanted to make a few points that some former Alumni have had tremendous success and just a JC head coach doesn't make you a "JC guy" if you had D1 experience before that. At the end of the day, we all want Sac State football to compete for a Big Sky Championship and a National Championship. The debate is good but we shouldn't be polarized like the political parties! :)
 
The program has never achieved anything, why promote one of its former players to lead it? Ive been an ardent fan of this program for thirty years, why not try something different, using the good ol boy mentality in hiring a HC has done nothing. Yes, some players have achieved personal success, but overall the program is a perpetual loser.

I think fresh blood, views and the ability to motivate, organize and lead young men are needed. Sac is in a state with 40M+ people and only a few hundred/thousand available full ride football scholarships. I think any kid worth his salt would be willing to play DI football and receive a free education and board for four years is motivation enough. The Sac HC doesnt have to be some magical recruiter who has a golden key to every HS lockerroom. Just because you are buddies with the HS HC and are 'respected' doesnt mean a $10K+ yearly scholarship doesnt have draw by itself.

Instead of having the HC recruit the kid, lets have the kids recruit the school. Do we want kids who will graduate and are motivated by personal success or are we trying to recruit the kid who runs fast but is dumb as a rock and is swayed by a smooth talker recruiter?

There are many examples of new HC's coming in and rocking the world in their first year and they dont have people and fingers in every HS to start. That is a nice feature but not the litmus test for success.
 
Let me just say this: I will not willingly subscribe to the idea of banishing former coaches and players from Sac State simply because "old school" didn't get it done. There are several "old school" players and coaches who have done well in other venues, learning new things in those areas. Jonny O learned a lot at Nebraska and elsewhere, and is proving that now at ARC (played for the state championship this past season) and as CEO of Linemen Win Games, Inc., a nationally known OL/DL tutoring service. Angus McClure is doing outstanding things as DL Coach at UCLA, which did played in a prominent bowl this season. Bruce Pielstick is doing great as the OC for Mid-America Nazarene. To that list of Sac-connected folk, I would add the new QBs coach at Tennessee, Mike Canales, who was interim HC at North Texas twice and at South Florida once, and had a hand in the production of L.A. Chargers QB Phillip Rivers and former SF 49ers QB Gio Carmazzi (out of Carmichael-Jesuit). He has an extensive FBS resume extending back to playing and coaching at Utah State and locally at UOP. Sure, a national search might help get "new blood," but please don't define out locals simply on the theory that "locals" somehow suck by definition. If they have experience and integrity (and these guys certainly have both), they deserve a shot, IMO.

UCLA was terrible this season and also on hot seat. If you really want to compare resumes I believe the current staff would go a lot further. Wulff did great with Wazzu and was on a Super Bowl team with 49ers working with Harbaugh. Lawanson was with ASU when they were in PAC 12 Championship team. Newcomers Huard was OC at Illinois State when they were a playoff contender. Did some background on new DB coach. He is From Jacksonville State, playing in National Title game not to long ago.

Really it is just finding the right guy for the job if it even comes open. I am willing to see what happens this season, maybe a better idea Week 5

I just want the process to find the next HC to be done right...similarly to how the new AD was found which was finding the best fit on the open market. However I will continue to slap down OSH's Hornet alum affirmative action narrative as that doesn't benefit anyone except for whatever select few are on his buddy list.

FWIW I think Coach O would be best suited for a coordinator role under the new regime. Then hopefully this program goes on a tear over the next 3-5 years and wins a lot of games and gets into the playoffs and the new HC is hired away to the FBS promise land. At that point Coach O will be more than ready to take over as HC. :twocents:
 
And you know this because you gathered so much experience and wisdom on the topic when you took a class with a couple of football players when you were a freshman at Sac State?

Oh no, I learned absolutely nothing from those guys…hell I doubt they passed the class let alone even graduated. After all these are football players we are talking about.

But keep spinning your weak narratives over and over again. It reminds me of that retarded kid in Kindergarten that sat in the corner and kept trying to push the square peg through the round hole over and over again.
 
HHD glad you are back, and for the record, you are class act and so is your son. I felt that JO got the shaft then, but man has your son made gold bars out of lemons.

On the head coach issue, all the back and forth regarding alumni vs. national search, I would say this. I do think we should have an extensive search. That said, everyone gets equal footing, you win or lose the job on your experience and what you have done. I do not believe someone is more qualified just because of their pedigree (see Hornet basketball in the 1980's pedigree coach, cocaine, hotel rooms and hookers), nor do I think someone is disqualified because they were a former Hornet. If you have the chops, you have the chops.

And for the love of Hornet football and for the hatred of mediocre at best coaching, can we stop the personal attacks of one another. :shock:

Hornet Hope, thanks. I agree with you on the head coach issue. The AD should interview the best candidates and make the best choice.

I agree there should be no personal attacks. This should stop. We should all respect each other regardless of opinions. Its good to be back on the board and I now wish the Hornets great success.

Another swing and a miss. These players from the early to mid 00’s are the same ones that landed this program on academic probation…so no, I don’t respect their scholastic prowess.
