Athletic Director Candidates

SDH...a guy with absolutely no sack, no experience in the areas he professes to be a genius and who talks tough from behind a keyboard. There's about four on the planet that buy into your BS. Keep trying to impress them from your mother's basement.

See that North Dakota, who is leving the Big Sky, has now won the berth to the NCAA basketball tourney after winning the Big Sky regular season title in basketball and in football. Amazing how North Dakota comes into the Big Sky a few years ago and wins big in football and basketball and is soon leaving the conference.

UND took home the Grand Slam of the Big Sky: the Big four revenue championships in fb, vb, wbb, and mbb, and also coaches of the year in all those sports. And hockey is by far our biggest revenue sport, as we are still the defending national Champs! And each of those sports should get even better next year, as sophomores played key roles on those teams. Mbb loses a main cog in Hooker, but Crandall is only a sophomore and growing in leadership.
UND has had a great run. Congrats.

Think you guys have a shot at keeping baseball now that it can park itself in the Summit?

More cuts are coming in a week or so, so that won't happen. Our mbb coach needs a raise too.

But our hockey team is dancing again this weak in a regional in Fargo. Ohio St, BU, and Minn-Duluth are the other teams.

Hope you guys finally get a decent arena on campus.

Massari would have been plenty outside the box for me.

I applaud Nelsen for going with his decision and not the Alumni

The only question will be can Orr's success translate over from a private university. SMC has seen a lot of success under Orr's leadership. This is a good hire for us.

I think this finally happens and shovels will hit dirt within the next few years. Sac State will pay $140k to rent Golden 1 Center for 2 days of graduation ceremonies this May. It would have been $190k had the City not designated the event as one of its civic events. This is an event that should be on campus and the rental cost will only increase over time which will put even more pressure for Nelsen (and Orr) to get it built.

When does the deal with Pepsi expire? I remember Gonzo got $12M for campus exclusivity and that was used to build the Well/Broad. That was in 2004, if I remember correctly.

Perhaps Coke is willing to pony up $15-20M?
How about imposing a car tax? For every campus parking ticket sold on campus there is a $1 or $2 tax. This would drive down cars on campus and provide long term revenue for 'Destination' facilities on campus.

Presser on the Orr hire was held today. Have to admit, everything about this move has felt D1. From the nation-wide search, to the interview process, and now to the intro. Presser was streamed live on the athletics Facebook which was followed up by multiple articles and announcements across all the social media outlets and websites affiliated with Sac State. This is how it should be done.

Hornetsports release on the Orr hire.

Sac Bee even got in on the action:

Davidson article.

Voisin article. Sounds like she has been reading Sac Buzz.

The top three candidates from that "nation-wide search" you seem to be so hung up on ended up being a guy who had worked in the Sac State administration for years...a Sac State graduate who played football here...and a guy who grew up in Sacramento and was working 70 minutes away.
I'm wondering how long it's going to take you to figure that out, genius.

I’m well aware that it is who you know, and not what you know that opens doors in this life. However it is rather convenient of you to leave out the guy from Kansas that is an AD in Louisiana...of course this is coming from the guy that said it was Massari and “three other guys”. BTW good call on that one.

FWIW Massari’s open forum was 2nd to worst of the 4…would have been the worst if not for some glaring gaffes by Wickstrom…but of course you know that already. :coffee:

Admittedly, the seasoned veterans on this board have investigated the AD candidates more than I ... but with that said, the hiring of the kid that came to games here, and snuck through gates, blah blah ... sounds like more of the same small town feel good stuff... I understand the AD responsibilities are much greater than football, but as we all know, good football can take an entire athletic department to levels never seen...Orr comes from a non-football school, and yes he played briefly at Cal, not quite the same...this was the opportunity to start thinking big, like FBS at some point sooner rather than later... in my opinion, the Group of 5 FBS and top FCS programs are going to hook up in some form as the Power 5 continues to pull away...Orr may be perfectly qualified, time will tell, but Nelson talks a big game and I would have expected a dip into a Power 5 Athletic Department for an aggressive young gun ...

....unproven at AD.

Hornets can't fire another dud with the executive change, gotta go with the better odds.

Orr is a proven DI AD with a demonstrated desire to remain and grow. Maybe having someone with the hometown hero kid does good syndrome and the passion that it brings is appealing to Nelson? Orr seems highly accepted and respected in the media, has the degrees and I believe will provide a good era for Hornets athletics.

Massari dropped out weeks ago, Wickstrom was an unknown and Fulp earns $350K at Cal.
Last man standing is also another good tactic.
