Game will be at roughly 2:30 Mountain time on TNT. Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller and Dan Bonner will be the commentary crew.

Wow, I usually get home at 4:30 EST so that works perfectly for me. I can't wait.

SDSU got a GREAT draw (regional in Anaheim biggest reason why---with Dook as the #1)......I was hoping we'd draw BYU or Florida...

Another reason to be happy is that we played in this arena already this season so it won't be new territory. The bad? Devon was 0-10 in field goal shooting that game. The good, we scored 70 points in that arena with Devon going 0-10 so if Devon can find his range in there, we may be in decent shape.

An article from the SD paper, mentions the game from 3 years ago about half way down http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/mar/13/aztecs-get-no-2-seed-west-region/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's a good article. The win we had is a double edged sword. I think it gives our team confidence but it also means SDSU will not take us lightly.

Looks like our pep band will be going to the game as well (from the Greeley Trinune):
“This is one of the best things that’s happened to Greeley,” said Mayor Tom Norton, who was soaking up the fun. “Everyone was buzzed about it at city hall. This is kicking our inferiority complex in the butt.”

But still, wow, that cheer, that explosion, really, that came the moment UNC’s 15th seed was announced. Inferiority complex? THAT town?

Maybe the loudest cheer came from the band. This is only the second year UNC has had a basketball band, and now the 20 or so who regularly play get to go to Tucson, Ariz. The band will have to give up its spring break to go. That doesn’t seem to be a problem.

“We were ecstatic,” said Kyle Sneden, a sophomore saxophonist who played with the band both years and even played Sunday with a smaller crew. “This beats ANYTHING I was going to do this week.”

Other students were prepared to spend their spring breaks cheering on the Bears as well. An especially rabid group, the C.O.W.S. — Cheering On With Spirit — plans to travel.

“Whatever it takes,” Jeremy Gregory said. “We’re going to try to get there.”

Best of luck with a big mobile and athletic team in SDSU. I watched your Montana game as I am originally from Montana. I am afraid these Aztecs might be a little much, but your team has heart and the Beitezl (sp) kid is tough.

I registered here before to comment on the great RB your football team got from Valley Center CA.

aztecwin (and other SDSU folks) any insight on your team that you could provide would be appreciated. Living in the East Coast I don't get many West Coast games and I know very little about them. I do know they kicked the crap our of a lot of teams this season.

My breakdown on SDSU:
Starts with defense - aggressive man to man exclusively, usually half court tough d, some token full court traps particularly in the midst of runs (this team has feasted on big runs), allowing under 60 a game

The team is senior laden and experienced: returned 5 starters and a transfer that is the 6th man plus a couple more key bench players off last years team

will run when it's there and did more of that at the end of the year, but are very content to control tempo and go to the half court (well below national averages for possessions a game)

Front court
Bread is buttered on offense with rebounding: Leonard a super soph and likely lottery pick gobbles up boards and has an ever developing mid range game - he's best with the ball not in his hands as with the dribble it tends not to come out and a shot is going to be hoisted up. averaging a double double

Malcolm Thomas Sr is 6 9ish, long, athletic, a pogo stick, good rebounder, drives get funneled to him and he's a good shot blocker. good passer from the elbow and in the interior though will throw some balls away. Post moves tend to be 5-8 feet out and are quick, ball, maybe a bounce and go. streaky for games at a time: will destroy for a few then disappear

Billy white Sr athletic and long (a trend) very inconsistent, but when focused has had monster games: 30u @gonzaga, 22 and 12 and 5 steals against byu, did the best anyone has done all year for any team vs freddette. only goes left. attacks the basket with speed a lightening long first step, some mid range game, battles underneath for tip backs

all 3 forwards have taken turns getting into some foul trouble early and that takes them out of their game

Reserves:
Carlwell: sr. once upon a time big recruit for Illinois, 610ish 300+ pounds, pretty athletic can get out of position at times on defense Has been on the floor for long stretches during runs as his energy feeds them

Shelton: jr been decimated with injuries, has lost a lot of his game, takes charges, often plays a few strong minutes for some reason has fallen in love with taking a 3 a game

J Franklin: frosh is really starting to come on and get PT, freakish athlete, jumps out of the gym, got lost a little on defense early but without a lot of early PT has turned into a quality player, will crash boards, throw down some ally oops

back court
dj gay senior captain has started the most games in sdsu history, heady, went parts of 5 games without a turnover, has been in a bit of a shooting slump the last 5 games until the end of the conf tourney, has hit 2 game winners and stopped many more runs with big shots, when hot is really hot from 3, dictates the tempo of almost every game. plays 40 minutes in most big games

Tapley soph starter most of last year, good defender can hit some 3s, can get to the lane, but mostly takes a back seat and fills a roll on this team

reserves
rahon soph, transfer pure 3 pt shooter also can get to the rack off his 3pt risk, improving defender, good size 65ish

Team has had only a few blistering starts, often slogs it out for a while, lots of big runs to end the 1st half. Started the season playing 5 games away from home, 19 or so games home or neutral, Aztecs have been developing a good traveling crew in semi-local games: @Long beach, @Cal, vegas, etc. Fisher doesn't call a lot of timeouts (both game winners let it play out and the ball never left DJ's hands) let's them work through it.

Steve Fisher's press conference: http://www.youtube.com/user/goaztecscom?feature=mhum#p/u/12/NHkl04WmxPs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; also that channel has player pressers, highlights, interviews, etc.

Hope that helps, if I missed anything, let me know

Great write-up monty, thank you.

Also, Fisher really knows how to say the right thing. Reminds me a bit of Lou Holtz (with much more class).

Really nice article on Coach Hill:

Yep, great story and also a great video with Aztec head coach. A lot of people don't know and or have forgotten that we beat them just 2 years ago. So its not like we do not have a chance. This is a very winnable game ! Hopefully we are done with e-griz BS ?? Or are they still whiney?? Go Bears!!

I should have added one of the biggest keys: against the Zone
Good committed Zones give the Aztecs trouble, thrown together ones the Aztecs usually offensive rebound the other team out of it. Zones speed them up a bit in the half court particularly when it first pops up and 3s get hoisted, though the Aztecs got back to getting the ball to the elbow and using baseline cuts and interior passing.
Also, Aztecs don't shoot a high % from free throws, though have closed half a dozen games at the line in a hack-an-aztec

Stole this from the Aztecs board.

Three famous alums from each of the 68 schools:

I think playing SDSU will be good for the Bears mentally at least. They've played this team before, at home even. There won't be the intimidation factor of playing one of the other #2 seeds. Not to say that SDSU is a worse team physically than any of the other 3 #2's, but you know what I mean.
