Coaching NEWS

This got me thinking, so I asked ChatGPT to identify potential coaching targets for Sacramento State, many were absurd, but here they are in order lol, with some outdated info:

Here are 15 realistic options to fill the vacant head football coach position at Sacramento State, considering experience in FCS football, familiarity with the Big Sky Conference, recruiting acumen, and potential fit for the program:

1.
Troy Taylor (Former Head Coach, Sacramento State)
2. Jay Hill (Head Coach, Weber State)
3. Bobby Hauck (Head Coach, UNLV)
4
. Danny White (Offensive Coordinator, Boise State)
5. Jason Jones (Defensive Coordinator, Montana)
6. Paul Wulff (Former Head Coach, Washington State)
7. Joe Glenn (Former Head Coach, Montana)
8. Craig Bohl (Head Coach, Wyoming)
9. Tim Walsh (Former Head Coach, Cal Poly)
10. Mike Neu (Head Coach, Ball State)
11. Marty Mornhinweg (Former NFL Offensive Coordinator)
12. Kyle Cummings (Defensive Coordinator, Northern Arizona)
13. Willie Simmons (Head Coach, Prairie View A&M)
14. Keith Heyward (Co-Defensive Coordinator, Oregon)
15. Justin Wilcox (Head Coach, California)

I think JAY HILL could be a good fit!

Surprised no Jason Eck…

Bobby Hauck is die hard Griz but overall he’s a consistent winner.

Brent Vigen is the other I’d add amd see if they want to change lifestyle?

Well, Andy ultimately agreed with those smart folks, as he volunteered himself out of town after only 2 years because even he was able to recognize that which only the stubborn and blind do not.
I think Andy didn’t want to fire Bobby F and he knew it was needed. While he was trying to get himself to do it… he found a parachute to Stanford Football.

He and Troy both have to resurrect Stanford into a winner fast or they will both be looking for jobs in 26. ? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tim skipper could be the next head coach. Of the hornets another name out there, is James montegomery he sounds like another great coach. That can replace Andy Thompson hopefully the hornets turn it around next season

Low end of MWC...

Fresno State coach Matt Entz signed a five-year contract worth $7.35 million, not including an evaluation bonus available next year or any performance bonuses over the term of the deal.

The former North Dakota State head coach will be paid $1.1 million his first season with about 35% of that base salary paid by the university and the remainder by its Athletic Corporation, according to an offer letter released by the university on Friday.

In subsequent years, Entz’ base salary climbs to $1.35 million in 2026, $1.5 million in 2027, $1.65 million in 2028 and $1.75 million in 2027.

The $1.1 million next season will rank toward the bottom of the Mountain West Conference. UNLV coach Barry Odom will be at the top of the league with a base salary in 2025 reported to be $2 million, followed by Colorado State coach Jay Norvell at $1.9 million and San Diego State coach Sean Lewis at $1.853,100.

The evaluation bonus is not typical in coaching contracts at Fresno State. If Entz’ annual evaluation in his first year is satisfactory or better, and the program is not under investigation or has not been sanctioned by the NCAA for a major rules violation due to misconduct or negligence by the Bulldogs’ coach, he will receive a one-time $100,000 bonus.

The performance bonuses are capped at $350,000 a year excluding bonuses tied to participation in bowl games as they were in the contract of former coach Jeff Tedford, who signed a university-friendly contract when returning to his alma mater a second time.

There are subtle differences in the bonuses between the two contracts.

Tedford and Entz have the same bonuses for annual NCAA Academic Progress Rate score, but Tedford’s annual grade-point average bonus was $47,500 for a 2.8 and $55,000 for a 2.9 and above and Entz’ bonus tops out at $35,000 for a 2.8 and above.

They have the same bonuses for regular-season wins and advancement to and winning the conference championship game, topping out at $120,000 for 11 or more wins and $75,000 for winning the conference championship game.

But there is a significant difference in bowl participation bonuses.

Tedford received a $75,000 bonus for participating in a conference-associated or at-large bowl game, or $100,000 for winning that game. The bonuses in Entz’ contract are $50,000 or $75,000.

Tedford received $250,000 for participating in a New Year’s Six bowl or $350,000 for winning that game. Entz will receive $150,000 for participating in a first-round College Football Playoff game or $250,000 for winning that game.

They receive the same $500,000 for participation in a CFP national semifinal game.

Entz does have a larger bonus for reaching the CFP national championship game at $600,000 to $500,000 for Tedford. Both would receive a $1 million bonus for winning a CFP national championship game.

Fresno State paid interim coach Tim Skipper $700,000 this season. He has secured a $50,000 bonus for taking the Bulldogs to a bowl game, and that would increase to $75,000 if they send him off with a victory in that game.

The university also included substantial liquidated damages, should Entz resign prior to the end of the contract. The buyout is $3 million before Jan. 31, 2026, $2 million before Jan. 31, 2027, $1.5 million before Jan. 31, 2028, $1.25 million before Jan. 31, 2029 and $1 million before Jan. 31, 2030.

If you want Jay Hill, it will likely take about $2,000,000 to even get him to consider it. He's getting 1.5 million as the DC at BYU. He is not leaving that gig for less than 2 milion and probably more than that to go to Sac.

Keep dreaming though.

I respect him for recognizing he is a better Lieutenant than General.
Agree… the humility to self reflect and analyze our own strengths and weaknesses are traits of good leaders.

I think AT recognized after being HC that he was spread so thin that he wasn’t effective enough to be a D1 HC.

Maybe if he had a larger budget for more staff? But after this experience in 2 seasons he probably feels he’s a better DC than a HC
It was a good decision and as a bonus for good karma he got bailed out and even upgraded.

I wish the Stanford crew success.

I wish them success in appreciation for what they did for our Hornets Program, 🏆 🏆🏆

That’s a lot of $.

We will need a Hornet Coach Foundation that can be a collective to have community and local business assist in HC compensation packages once we hit FBS.

The San Jose St HC sure turned things around.

Thinking we probably won’t hear who our next HC will be until first week of January?

The FBS invite for a higher caliber of coach and larger HC budget is such a factor. (Chicken or Egg)

Hopefully next week will be a great week for us! 🙏🏻

I find myself watching FCS Playoffs.

I am disgusted to say this but the new HC Tim Plough is doing great.

I wanted to support Big Sky teams! Then I remember it’s FUCD and then I cheer for Coyotes.

I would be disgusted if somehow they win a National championship his first season?

FUCD seems to consistently choose quality Head Coaches.

Historically our program has been hit & miss.

Plough did a great job this year but he was handed a talented senior laden team. I heard they have 39 seniors, lets see how he does after Larison, Hastings and their defensive stars are gone.

Yes, all the crap their board talks about Sac St like they’re superior. But this was their best team in D1 era and they didn’t even win conference, had one home playoff win with 6k fans and then got handle by SD today. Those turds really need to be quiet until they roll off some conference championships

Lots of coaches can take over a ready-made team/program and do well with it for a while. But by year 3 you can typically tell if they will be able to sustain it over the longer term or not.

AT was such a poor fit that it only took barely into year 2 for things to come into focus in that regard.

As far as UCD goes, here’s hoping Plough fits into the AT category. ;)

IIRC the Hornets are 3-2 against UCD the past 5 seasons. And own more conference championships over that same time span.

It’s clear which has been the superior program in recent times. If the Hornets administration gets this next hire right — I don’t suspect that will change any time soon.

Even when we lost to them last year we still went to playoffs over them and won a playoff game. This was a great opportunity for them to win a BSC championship
