Coaching rumors

The Griz signed their new coach, Bob Stitt, inventor of the Fly Sweep.

Should be interesting in Missoula, a lot of people are high on the guy, but he was in D2 for 15 years and only won 1 playoff game. I thought the Griz would higher a much bigger name with more success at the D1 level.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't think it was their best hire....

My favorite reaction to the hire:

Not excited. My Christmas just got Stitt on.

Baldwin was hired with one hear of head coaching experience going 1-1 in the DII playoffs, so to quote Gust Avrakotos and the zen master..."we'll see."

I believe Baldwin was 2-1 at cwu in the playoffs which gives him twice as many wins in one year compared to 15 years, haha.

I just find it baffling that they wouldn't select Hauck. He dominated the bsc and took them to three chippers, you can't argue with those results.

We will definitely see how this works out. I find it funny that a UNC reject is now running the show at Montana...

It's good for the big sky when montana does well so I hope it works, it just seems like they took a huge risk...

Stitt was a great hire for Montana. He's coming from outside of the program with new ideas. As many already know, he's the innovator of the fly sweep. The fly sweep is just a part of an overall spread-option package that defenses have a ton of trouble trying to defend. West Virginia even used Stitt's sweep in the 2012 Orange Bowl where they put up 70 on Clemson.

There are people who say, "if he's so innovative and successful, why was he stuck in DII for 15 years?" Stitt is the type of coach who wants to be a head coach and have full control of his offense. He's been asked to be the OC for several FBS schools, only to turn them all down. Stitt knew he would never truly have full control of his offense if he were just an OC.

Another factor that could explain why he was in Colorado for 15 years is his family. Some coaches put more emphasis on family than on career. Most likely they were comfortable where they were and were waiting for the right opportunity to move to DI.

As for his playoff/overall record at CSM, he did almost the impossible. CSM has insanely high acceptance ratings as it's an engineering school, which greatly reduces the recruiting pool that Stitt had to choose from compared to the rest of the conference and the type of players they could recruit that CSM couldn't. Every single player on that team is an engineering major. Before Stitt arrived at CSM, the program was arguably the worst team in DII. In 1999, the Orediggers scored about 100 total points that season. When Stitt took over and implemented his offense, the team scored somewhere over 400 points that season. Stitt turned that program into a winner when the odds where stacked against him.

A lot of Griz fans are extremely psyched about what Stitt will do at Montana. With the leash off and a much bigger pool of talent to recruit from, Stitt should have the program back to the top of the Big Sky relatively quickly. 2015 should be a good year but likely a rebuilding year, and we should start winning the Big Sky by 2016.

Baldwin came from the DII ranks and has done wonders for EWU. We're hoping Stitt has the same results, but winning more National Championships.

On the Colorado State front, it appears that a couple names are moving to the forefront, namely Scott Frost and Geogia OC Mike Bobo. There doesn't appear to be much buzz around Baldwin, so that's always a plus for us. They expect to name a coach by this coming Monday.

Also on a side note, apparently Michigan is offering Jim Harbaugh a six-year, $49 million dollar contract to be their coach, to include total control of all football operations and reportedly control on academic standards for recruits. He would be the highest paid coach in American football, with $8.17 million per year if he accepts.

Other rumor is that Dave Baldwin (interim CSU coach) is the favorite to become the Oregon State offensive coordinator now....

Colorado State hired Bobo, the OC from Georgia today. It looks like Baldwin is ours for one more year!

And hopefully many more to come!

I would love it if we hung onto Beau for quite sometime, but I have a feeling next year will be our last with Beau.

Quite possibly, but we've been saying that for a while now.

True, I didnt think we'd lose him this year. But Next year if there are openings on the west coast I will fear we lose him. I think he stayed this year for Vernon, plus $166k a year for Cheney/Spokane is like living in a mansion.... coming from a current college student
