Greeley Tribune Reporting Friday June 13

UNC Board of Regents expected to approve contract extension for football coach

The University of Northern Colorado Board of Regents is scheduled to meet this morning and approve an extension for the contract of football coach Earnest Collins Jr., along with that of volleyball coach Lyndsey Oates and approve the contract of new women’s basketball coach Kamie Ethridge.

Check back to greeleytribune.com for more details.

From the Tribune's updated article-

“When I evaluate coaches, I look at more than the win/loss reccord,” Dunn said. “Earnest is doing a great job with the program and his players are doing a great job in the classroom and everywhere else,” Dunn said. “He’s (Collins) extremely good in our community.”

Apparently Dunn must be subscribing to Monfort's sports business model where winning doesn't matter.

I'm pretty surprised as well. Dunn must see progress where everyone else doesn't. The good news is Lindsy Benson has a new contract as well. She has done great with the volley ball program!

There is a termination clause in his new contract. So if by chance we don't come close to .500, I think he will be gone regardless of his new extension.

Long time no post......
regarding contract extension, let me just say AAARRRRGGGHHHH
I hope the best for our team, but there's a time to say enough. I hope we don't forget about the see ya clause

It's kind of weird Dunn comes in and speaks and shows all this loyalty to a bunch of coaches he didn't hire... not that he should fire them all but wouldn't it be prudent to watch and observe before extending a guy that's went winless in this third year? I'm not saying fire him but geez, he's done nothing to earn an extension.

Yeah, it seems odd. What I don't understand is the lack of progress and then the extension. It's strange that in his first year we had zero wins then in year 2 we jumped to 5 wins, which IS making progress. Then we had the debacle last season. I didn't think we had lost much talent from year 2 going into year 3 (last season) so that was a shock. I really thought the program had turned the corner and then we went back to rock bottom. Dunn is smart though putting that termination clause in. As I said before, he needs to at least come close to .500 or else fire the entire staff.

Definitely happy to hear there is a termination clause in the new contract. Unless they show decent progress this season I just don't see how you could justify keeping this staff any longer. I respect that the team is performing well in the classroom and the team and coaches have been good for the community, but to discount the importance of a winning program in the equation is naive.

Having been around the game as a player and coach, I can say Coach Collins has integrity, which is what he expects from his players. If they are perfoming in the classroom and graduating, not being a troublemaker in the community, I say that trumps wins and loses. Look at the FSU Heisman Trophy winning, National Championship winnng QB at FSU. Need I say more?? That might be the reason for the extension. Also, UNC IS attempting to go after the best in players in Colorado, while the D1 majors in state, are bypassing for California kids. If enough of them stay home, the Bears will be good really soon. All the people complaining on here need to talk to the boosters and regents about raising some money for an indoor facilty and upgrading what UNC already has. Or, help encourage the state's best to enroll at UNC. That makes a difference to recruits.

You made some great points but I believe we have to have it both ways. We need great student athletes in the classroom, community and on the field ! We cannot continue to go 0-11, 1-10, etc. We have to work thru this to succeed ! As far as raising more money, I think there is a lot of opportunity out there. In the past we have not had the best marketing in place and going ahead we need to tap into a lot of new corporations and businesses.. I believe Mr. Dunn is the right guy and will improve our athletic program and money situation greatly.

I think I'm about done (Dunn)
i realize that I sound like a negative putz at this point, however, I also have rubbed elbows with a number of players who would take issue with the glowing character references for mr collins. Obviously, we don't divulge the names of players or their specific comments. Either we are getting info from opposite ends of the spectrum or ?????
I sure do agree that character is revealed during the season, and we NEED student-athletes to graduate. Beardevil, I agree....we need to expect the best from both worlds. The players that I have spoken with are resentful of the time they are required to spend in activities that further the image of mr collins as a principled human.
Please take time to look back on my previous posts. I believe that the sum of my posts is accurate. I appreciate the time and passion that many posters have put into supporting our school and programs.
I also believe the adage that the definition of insanity is to keep repeating the same action and expect different results.
That being said...........I have run the roller coaster that accompanies being "all in" in support of any endeavor.
I'm out

Are these players recruited by Downing or Collins?

I have to agree with Beardevil. We as fans, alumni and boosters have every right to expect and even demand that it be both ways. Coaches are not hired to win citizenship or character awards. They are expected to bring a high-level of integrity and character to the job, but ultimately coaches are judged on wins and losses. Athletic programs are judged on wins and losses. Right or wrong, the football program at most universities is the face of the school. Maybe more so at the Power 5 level or FBS level, but it still holds some truth at the FCS level. Students take pride in a winning program. Kids often pick schools because of their winning sports tradition. How many athletes commit to a program because the coach builds character but doesn't win? Even the service academies, where it is about character and integrity, they fire coaches who don't win. Let's stop giving a ribbon to everybody, stop making excuses, stop justifying losing because we have character and start demanding more from our coaches and administration.
