Collins Contract Extension

Trust me, I know exactly "what goes into playing football and maintaining a full course load while maintaining a good GPA." It's not easy. But it's a choice you made when you accepted a scholarship at UNC. Granted that you made that choice when Downing was coach. When he was fired and Collins was hired, you apparently had a hard time adjusting to the new coaching style and his staff. You stated that you only played for Collins for one year, so I'm assuming it was your senior year. I'm sure it was an adjustment for you and all your teammates, especially for the upperclassmen like yourself. New offense, new defense, new routine, new rules, etc. Being a upperclassman you may have felt slighted by the amount of playing time you got under Collins. I'm sure that losing eleven games was not how you envisioned you last season of football. Bottom line, you and some other players are bitter about your experience with UNC and Collins. That does not mean that "nobody respects him." I know for a FACT that all of the players on the team do NOT feel this way. Like I said before, you made a choice to play football at UNC. You could have walked away at anytime, but you didn't. I assume that you stayed because you didn't want to lose that scholarship that you are not grateful to have received. You obviously didn't stay because you cared about the team as a whole, because after all, the entire coaching staff is part of the team. Remember, there is no "I" in team. Go Bears!!!

Well I don't know who you are talking to because I know that this was a huge issue. You obviously weren't in the locker room though so how can you say you know for a fact? Also I wasn't someone slighted in playing time. Collins couldn't cut my PT even if he wanted to. Dont you ever question what I did for this team though. I didnt care about this team? you can kiss my ass. I busted my ass for this Coaching staff. It doesnt change the fact that they suck. I stayed because I love my school and my teammates. I couldn't care less about this coaching staff. Please dont comment on anything when you were not in the locker room. I was there. I keep in touch with a ton of my teammates. Nothing has changed. Maybe you would feel the same way if you heard from the running back coach that the only place for white players is on the offensive line you would feel the same way. You guys truly have no idea what is going on in that place.

A few things:

1. There you go again. You have an issue of entitlement. You said "Collins couldn't cut my PT even if he wanted to." Yes he could have and he could have cut you from the team.

2. While I haven't heard anything but bad things about coach Robinson, I'm not sure if your statements about race are accurate. Ryan Wolpin and Trae Rieck are running backs who are white. Wolpin is trying his hand at Boise State, but he was recruited to play here.

3. I do agree that Downing's assistants were better. I was disappointed that Peterson (who seemed to be the best coach on the staff) nor Deti didn't get a fair shake at being named head coach.

Thank you!
McCandyMan.......again, I have appreciated your posts, and the fact that we (all) have often disagreed on issues, but been in agreement that we love and support OUR school!
The interesting thing is that this recent situation has caused people to question that which is represented as fact. The truth cares not if it is believed, rather, it just is.
It is not incumbent on any of us to infer that "I don't believe you" (I mean really, "can I trust you?").
This is not a board to spread ill-will, rather, an air clearing, viewpoint and truth sharing venue. There is nothing productive that comes from choosing up sides.

I've been hearing the magic number is five. If Collins fails to win five games this year, he and his staff will not be returning next year.

Well I don't see where hey can get 4 more wins from this schedule. Let's chalk up the games @ Montana and @ Eastern Washington as losses.

We then have to win 4 of the other 6 games. In a nut shell, he would have to win all of the remaining home games. I would be stunned if that happens.

I agree 100%.

No way in hell they win 5. I honestly don't see any other wins. They barely beat Houston Baptist which is bascially a glorified junior college roster, it's all Freshman and Sophmores.

Losers reward losers.... This is as bad as it gets. Collins could not have done worse last year and this year promises to not be much better. And he gets REWARDED for ineptitude? And some of you on this message board seem to think this is somehow a good idea and that he deserves leeway because most of his players are graduating and not getting arrested. The players are graduating because they go to class and do their work and the academic people are doing their work. Reasonable behavior by young men on football teams should be assumed not something remarkable if the coaches are doing the minimum to make sure they are not recruiting criminals and scumbags. Coaches mouth platitudes that they learned from their coaches, and Collins may be encouraging about his players graduating and being good men, but his job is to get the players ready to not get their asses kicked on the field and humiliate themselves and the fans.

Can any of you write with a straight face that our team is anything but an embarrassment? Do you really think the graduating players are looking back on their college careers with anything but mortification at the losses? If they say different they are lying or using selective memory. No one says to their sons or grandchildren, "Let me tell you about the time we lost to Pueblo" or "I cannot wait to go back for the 15 year anniversary of our 1-10 record season in 2013". Do you think the students can't wait until Saturdays to watch the Bears turn the ball over and lose again by 25? Dunn is a puppet that Kay Norton is controlling to cover her butt because she is the one who hired Collins. She will do nothing about firing Collins until we make her feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed she is worried about her reputation. If you think she gives a damn about losing you are fooling yourself...

Greeley may have gotten rid of its feedlots but the smell is still there. It's just coming from Nottingham Field....

I was giving Collins a pass for this game and wanted to see what he did at home against closer competition but I was really kidding myself.
Watching this game on TV gave me a much clearer impression of the team/coaching staff than the KFKA feed or some dodgy internet stream.
It was just too sad to watch. It's clear that things will not improve with this staff and they have got to go.

Ok, I'm gonna put this out there...If we really want to see a change and motivate Kay Norton and Dunn to make the right decision then letters from contributing alumni need to be written to them telling them that there will be no financial or monetary contributions made to the athletic program nor will tickets be purchased as long as this football coaching staff in place, starting with Collins!

Economics is the strongest motivating factor when a change needs to be made. This fool has destroyed the football and corresponding college experience of many UNC Football players.

Kinda sucks because I thought Collins was the right guy for the job. I hate to say it, because I thought Downing was a big douche too, but I think Collins has just made things worse.

It's funny, Downing was Mr Nice guy and the players seemed soft and lazy and had zero toughness, now they have Mr Hard Ass and the players seem to hate him and have zero fight or mental toughness...

I don't know the answer but there are examples of shitty programs that have turned around under the proper leadership... would Bill Snyder take this job? I'm joking but we need Helen Keller's teacher, a miracle worker...

Players will play hard for coaches they respect; that out weighs so called "Hard Ass" tactics. Collins showed his true colors after his first game (and first loss) as a coach at UNC when he threw the team under the bus stating that he needed guys that would buy into his program and when he got his guys in here (meaning guys he recruited) the program would win! It's hard to respect a coach as a player when every loss or piece of adversity is "your" fault and every victory or good thing is only b/c he recruited you or you drink his kool-aid!

It's hard to support a coach who consistently is unprepared, out-coached and doesn't know how to make adjustments going into or during a game or season.

Support the players but vote with your wallet if you want to see a change! That's what what I'm going to do.

Go Bears (just without Collins)

V-Jax: When discussing these wide-ranging accomplishments, Jackson is quick to credit the teammates and mentors at UNC who never stopped challenging him to succeed, especially Football Head Coach Earnest Collins.

“When I was being recruited he was still the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator,” Jackson said. “I can still remember sitting with him in my parents’ living room—there was something different about him. He said he wanted to help me reach the next stage in my life and my career and when I arrived at UNC he followed through on that promise to a T.”

This support proved especially crucial as Jackson made his ultimate transition into the NFL.

This is a huge mistake this coaching staff is not concerned about getting better. They do not even coach the players who don't start. The o-line sucks and yet they have not benched a single player yet. They won a game yesterday because their defense scored 14 points. the offense cant move the ball Boyer is to predictable. its like he thinks no one looks at film. Next Game watch the number of times he calls running plays on 1st and 2nd down. the running backs coach spends more time giving other position players a hard time than he does worrying about his running backs. the o-line coach is playing people based on ass kissing and Dads who played in the NFL. If this coaching staff is kept next year don't be surprised if they have a mass exodus of players transferring.

From a current NFL plaer who has been to the pro bowl, I would put that front & center in recruiting.

The real question that needs to be asked is if Mccandyman's kid was being treated the way some of the kids who post on here. And the sons of some of the parents that post on here would he feel the same way. I think he is worried his son will lose playing time if this staff is replaced. After what most of the players are saying that kissing ass gets playing time over hard work. I could see why he wouldn't want them to go.
