Displeasure with Downing

I'm writing this to voice my displeasure as a UNC alumni, someone who supported this team all fours years I attended the university. My friends and I went on road trips to see the Bears football team play. It has gotten so pathetic to see this team go from a national championship caliber team to the bottom of the standings year after year. I understand that our school took a jump into division one athletics but every other team at this university has shown progress to getting over that "hump." Our football has yet to climb this "hump" and I do not see that happening with Scott Downing or his staff leading the way. My fear is, that with economic concerns the university will opt to resign Coach Downing for pure money saving issues. Our attendance has gotten embarrassing, students do not want to see their school's team lose week after week and the residents of the city of Greeley deserve a team that has expectations to be great.

Everyone who participates on these blogs has to be frustrated with the results of this team year after. Please voice your displeasure for the lack coaching and preparation that is obviously not evident on this team. Thanks.

How could you go from beating a pretty good south dakota team to playing a first half like today? It all falls on coach, not getting the team prepared or formulating a game plan, even though I don't think they ever do. There's no way UNC should've been down 31-0 at half to Sac St., a team that was no better if not a little worse than south dakota. These kids showed a lot of heart by making a good come back, it was nice to see that. That was the only positive today. Time for Downing and co to clock out.

Some one on here has to know what's going on. Troy doesn't post on here anymore and he isn't going to let us in on anything anyways. I want to know what's going to happen to this coaching staff ASAP.

It's tough because the only true avenue that can probe the program (and give us the real dirt) is the Greeley Trib and they don't seem to want to do it (do their readers really care?).

KFKA and UNC need each other but I imagine UNC needs KFKA more than they need UNC but they need to keep things civil. One thing we can all agree on is that Jay has just been a disaster to UNC football.

And that's what he is, the King of Refuse. So bow down to him if you want, bow to him. Bow to the King of Slime, the King of Filth, the King of Putrescence. Boo. Boo. Rubbish. Filth. Slime. Muck. Boo. Boo. Boo.

The team is terrible and is not improving but beyond that another reason he should go is that nobody cares, to which I present exhibit A:

Attendance: 2464

What a sad state of affairs for a once proud program. The hiring of Downing was a monumental mistake. Jay needs to admit it and do something about it (if he can't send him packing also). The time to act is now to right the ship.

Do you suppose that in his head the noise from disgruntled fans gives way to the glorious roar of approval for defeating the mighty Griz?

Does sampling the winds still blowing in from Pocatello create images of grateful fans wiping bear blood from the returning victor?

Is he seeing alternating images of a discharge notice and contract renewal on his dark office wall?

WELL WIPE THAT DROOL BOY AND PREPARE TO MEET WHAT CANNOT BE DEFEATED.

Close but not defeated.
During the regular season.

From the perspective of a player who played under Dalton and Downing! Dalton(who was a good offensive coordinator, not head coach) left the program or lack there of in an aweful state! When he left there was no discipline what so ever! Players would show up late to or completely miss class, meetings, workouts, and practice and there would be no consequence for it! Players would go out several nights of the week and show up to practice hung over or still drunk and nothing would be said about it! That was the kind of hand that Downing was dealt! When he came in he brought discipline he came from schools who knew how to win! He understands what it takes to build a program, they are not there yet though!
The first few classes of players that Downing saw graduate were so used to the way things had been(w/ Dalton) that when Downing came in and demanded that they go to class, go to their workouts, show up to meetings and practice on-time many of them would not play for him! They didn't realize what a Division 1 program looks like! While Downing is a stand-up guy, he has his flaws but, who doesn't? His biggest mistake since he has been here is, that he hasn't made the greatest decisions of who his offensive coordinators should be(Chad Brown, Dennis Darnell)! Neither have been able to use the talent they have on offense effectively! Their schemes and play calling have been way too simple and predictable for the players to be successful! That would be the position that most definitely has to change by next year!
Looking at the whole time Downing has been here the amount of progress the team has made (not yet in the win column, but will come) in terms of what it takes to have a successful program is immeasureable! Whether he stays for this next season or not the team will have a winning record but, only because of what Downing has put in place!!!

Thank god this season is over and we can fire Downing and get this team moving in the right direction. One win in the big sky seems to be the best this staff can do. How can any coach win 6 games in four years and still keep his job? SHOW THIS SCHOOL AND THE CITY OF GREELEY YOU WANNA WIN AN FIRE DOWING AND HIS STAFF. HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET THIS TEAM MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

I was hoping for an article about the situation from the Tribune this morning. But there's nothing. Nice reporting loser newspaper.

Yeah when is the news conference to annouce the staff will not be retained, Monday 8am? Yeah right... if it was like last year when his contract was up nothing would be said for weeks and then quietly it would be announced in a 2 sentence blurb at the bottom of some article that he'd been extended... totally bush league.

I'm pretty sure this is the first post on this board from Coach Downing.

All I know, Coach, is that your little excuse about how the team is getting better even if it doesn't show up in the win column is getting pretty tired. You have had four years to turn this program around and, in all reality, you only got one FCS win again this year. San Diego is basically a D-III school and South Dakota is one year out of D-II. Your players may go to class but they are just fine with losing games. The teams under Joe Glenn would bleed out of their eyeballs before they would lose the close games you always lose, let alone get embarrassed like your teams often do. You seem like a nice guy but you've got to go!

I bet it'll be a good month before they say anything.

Apparently Jay is in Hawaii with the basketball team (what a lucky man) so he will probably address the football situation when he gets back.

Even though our win loss record was not what we would have liked to have seen this year, I am very proud of our team and the effort they put out in every game this year. This was a quote from Montana's coach after the game. “We're enthused, obviously, to be 10-0,” Montana coach Bobby Hauck said. “That was a convincing win over a team that I think is the most improved team in our conference.”

I would like to hear from some of the players in what they would like to see about the future of the program. Do they like Downing or do they want to start from the ground up again? If I were the one making the call I think I would look at what we have going now, what we could realistically do better, and then make a decision. It will be a tough call whatever choice is made and I hope for the best for UNC. Unlike many of you on this board I do not think Downing is that bad and I would like to see him have one more year with the program. I could also support a decision to move on with a new coach if we had the right guy for the program. I just don't buy into the change for change philosophy. It can make things worse and we could be starting another 4 or 5 year cycle of building from scratch.

here's what will happen, maybe as i write this!. for one the greeley tribune sucks! no guts to find out what is going on all year over at nottingham field. jay stays on as a.d., coach deti gets promoted to head coach. jay hires hime 3 or 4 new offenseve guys to coach. at least one or more with ties to no. colorado football. recruiting will be finr, downing has laid a good foundation to move forward with. we can compete at the d1 level with what he has started.

BUDBEAR.... You speak of "changing coaches for the sake of change" This team has won 6 games in four years..I believe that change is necessary to help this team get support from the school's students and the residents of Northern Colorado cities..Downing HAS TO GO!! Not for sake of change but because there are better candidates to lead this team to the success that so many of us are use to. PLEASE FIRE DOWNING AND GIVE THIS PROGRAM A CHANCE TO SURVIVE. Downing has shown no improvement and if you look at wins and losses he won 3 games this year BUT ONLY ONE in the big sky and thats all that matters!! FIRE DOWNING!
