Displeasure with Downing

You still have not answered my question? Where is the talent level? If you think that the 96,97,98,99 teams can not compete in the Big Sky, then prove to me that the 06,07,08,09 team have. The fact is, they have not come close. I have been back for a few games like said before. There is no doubt in my mind that Joe Glenn era teams would have been just fine in the Big Sky!! You can say what you want, but those team where better period! If you want facts, who do Downing teams have to match player for player. NFL caliber players where on those Teams, Dirk Johnson, Tashe Williiams, Scott Zimmerman,Jaime Hiener, Tomy Rameriz, Aaron Smith, Andy Hasse, Tom Beck, Courte McGuffey, Dillon Micus. I may even be forgetting a few. Then even Kay Dalton had a few Vince Jackson would have been an easy 1st Team All League player, Reed Doughty and the late GREAT Adam Mathews would have led the leage in rushing. So I ask again if they are better where is the talent?

Final evaluation!?!? One conference win, tied for last, and a 6-39 record, what else do you need to know?!?!?!

The fact that Downing says he want to make no changes in his staff to improve an offense that was anemic on a good day speaks volumes.

Hinrichs and Downing seem to be alright with mediocrity, and should both be shown the door.

This is a joke. What evaluation do you have to do Jay? The team sucks, the record sucks, and the fans aren't showing up. It would take all of 5 minutes for a competent AD to evaluate this situation.

I encourage everyone on this board who is fed up with this situation to email Jay. Let him know you're frustrated and encourage him to do what it takes to point this program back in the right direction. His email is [email protected]. If that link does not work, just go to the UNC athletic department homepage and you can hit the quick link from the athletic department staff page.

Wouldn't it be better to email the President and say get rid of Jay first?

Hey! I wanted to puke a couple of weeks ago when the guy in the booth with Coverdale said," I think Downing's the right guy for this program."
Obviously he's not a UNC grad.

Anyone solve the $195K owed to the current staff issue? I don't see anything happening unless someone steps up with a big check or a briefcase full of checks. . . . that ain't gonna happen in the ole cowtown anytime soon.

But if they're on a one year contract then we don't have to pay them once the contracts are up. When do they expire?

The contracts run on the university's fiscal year so they're up on June 30th. The only way the staff get's let go is if Kay Norton will cover the $200K debt left behind. Whatever the AD recommends, the university is going to have to cover the contracts remaining 7 months. Ultimately it''s Nortons decision and with all the things going on with UNC's budget - I don't see it happening. . . . the head of UNC's development office was let go this week. I don't know if finances have been this bad at UNC in many many years. It's like that all over.

Yeah, if that's the case, they'll all be back. It's bad across the board at every college in the state. CU is facing the same thing in Boulder. They might not be able to afford to buy out Hawkins contract. Is UNC still considering going to a private school?

$200K is not that much of an issue. It is somewhat of an issue I admit but, hell make them clean up offices or go fundraise to offset some other costs. The staff is costing them many times that in lost revenue from donations and attendance at home football games.

If the issue was paying off the last six months of the contract then we'd never be able to get ride of any employee so the logic in that arguement it totally flawed. No, rather the person in charge won't pull the trigger on his mistake he's rather go down with the ship when we average 2K in attendance next year because the team still sucks and nobody cares anymore. :x

Northern Colorado:
Sources tell us that Head Football Coach Scott Downing has a job for now, but is expected not to be retained after a 3-8 season. There has been no
decision on a contract extension. Downing signed a one-year deal worth $95,000 last December that runs through the end of the fiscal year in June.

Where is this from?

Adtionaly, Downing is under contract, but I seriously doubt his assistants are, so terminating his contract would really not cost that much. Plus you are only talking about half a year, so maybe $50k or so. If the department cant stomach that, then we have bigger problems.

I did the math for you, it's $195K to pay off all the contracts - and yes all the coaches have contracts. There is 7/12 of the contract yet to pay. Firing the staff will only happen if the president is willing to cover the debt - the universities budget is so far under water already that it is very unlikely that she'll cover it.

Looks like Portland State started interviews yesterday. WTF are we waiting for??

The same website says he will not be retained. Interesting. About the contracts...I don't think all the assistants will be fired. The last time I know they kept a few to help the transition. I say keep Deti, Shaver, Grable. The rest can go.

Wasnt Grable the only one who stayed on? Just because this is fun.....Ill throw out a couple names
Marty English--UW DC
Brian Cabral
Dan Hammerschmidt--Wyoming WRs/Assistant HC---Doesnt have ties to UNC but does have ties to the area

If thats true....

Yes but what are the terms of the contracts? Are they for the fiscal year like Downing or are they for the season? With some of those salaries, there is no way all of those guys are full time. Unless you have actually read the contracts, then there is no way to know for sure... and IMHO its a moot point anyway, even if it is 195K, this is not exactly new ground for this, or any university. There are contingency funds for this type of expenditure built into both the university and athletic budgets, and yes I have seen those. Somehow the university managed to find the funds to terminate the coaching staffs of several sports programs when Jay came on-board in addition to virtually the entire administrative staff, and the university was in a tight fiscal spot in those days too. On several occasions in the past several years the university has allowed the athletic department to operate at a deficit, so that is not new ground either. If all else fails and the athletic department needs to set up a fire Downing fund, I will be the first contributer !

The bottom line is that come hell or high water - DOWNING MUST GO!
