Final - 2014 Recruiting - 26 Verbals

The way the game is these days, I almost think you should over-recruit DBs like you ought to with DL. You can always convert a fast kid to another position, just like you can convert a big kid to another position. But come hell or high water, you never want to be left playing with a patchwork of DL and DB players. That's about the quickest way a team can be left exposed.

I agree. DBs seem to require skills difficult to detect at the high school level. Being a defensive back takes some incredible football awareness. Very often that skill development doesn't translate into college level football. If you don't over-recruit at this position, you can easily get a DB who is athletic, but doesn't react fast enough to make the big plays. It's almost surreal when you see a good DB who can read the quarterback and his WR at the same time.

This is my biggest concern for the 2014 season. We lost some incredible defensive backs and it is difficult to see how we are going to replace guys like Lee and Brown.

Safety should be okay with Tonani and McDonald coming back, assuming both come back strong from bad injuries. CB is another animal; we really don't have much experience at all coming back. It would be really helpful if we could find a transfer in this area.

LDdopaPDX,
I remembered everyone was worried we hadn't signed any OL. Read about this young man, from Moscow, ID, he just signed his Letter, and dropped in 32 points helping Moscow defeat Sandpoint 79-70 in Basketball.. He is Nick Ellison 6'7" 245 lbs, rumors he could be another Michael Roos. Will wait and see. Got info from my good buddy. Vic Wallace

245, that is really light. Hopefully he can put some weight on while keeping that athleticism.

That is what I was thinking. It all depends on how well he can fill in. If he can put on the pounds, he will have the ideal wingspan for a star left tackle.

I know from experience that if I drink enough beer I can gain 10% body weight per year  .
Seriously though is it within reason to gain 10%/year in a good way? If he can do that he will be about 275 as a red shirt frosh, 300 as a soph... With his speed and agility a 300 lb lineman will become a left tackle in the NFL.

I knew a guy who played for Central Washington University. He left highschool at 210 pounds and graduated CWU at 280 pounds and was selected as an all league nose tackle. No roids, just a lot of dedication to the weight room and a lot of calories (and beer, ha!)

So yes, it is certainly possible. At 6-7, it might actually be easier for him to put on the weight. It just depends on how hard he embraces the bulk.

Absolutely within reason - I personally know of a 6'7" tackle that was very"generously" listed at 260 as an incoming freshman 2011 (he was probably closer to 250ish) and now sits at 295 - pushing for 301+ by August camp. Lots of time in the weight room, and probably a beer or 2 here and there.... ;)

If I recall correctly, Michael Roos was only something like 220-225 coming out of High School. For guys with a similar build, it can be done. Eastern has quite the tradition of taking guys that maybe are a little lanky coming out of High School, but very athletic and putting a little weight on them and turning them into All Conference type tackles.

Indeed! Our 6'6 left tackle, Clay DeBord of Asotin, weighed 250 out of high school (2011). On our roster now, he weights 290!

So players who have the potential to make an immediate impact are the Webster twins & Hennessey?

Good question. I doubt anyone really knows at this point as a lot of it probably depends on what the roster looks like and where gaps can be filled in. I'd think anyone that could play corner has a shot at playing as a true frosh. Pretty much all the true frosh that played last year were defensive guys. Moore and Bourne were the only true frosh I remember playing on offense. Two true frosh- Zamora and Havili- got time at LB.

I'd bet a bunch Hennessy is redshirted next year. I think he's the guy being eyed as the future; the post-Vernon Adams era QB. However, I'm not sure what the guys behind Adams look like. It's going to be a little scary that no one behind him has any experience. Vitto provided a good option last season, and he obviously came in and did some really good things. We don't have that next year, so Vernon's health is going to be critical.

The Webster kid may impress just like VA did which will sure change things but they are looking at the brothers as corner bookends. Hennessey for sure is Red shirting. There are two QB's now who will be better than a raw kid out of high school, usless Hennessey or the Webter kid are the west coast answer to Johnny football. That would be great. If DJ Martin stays ( look at his You-Tube) I will be hard to stay under 50 per game.

Zamora was a redshirt freshman.

Another true freshman, D'londo Tucker played a lot at CB when T.J. Lee III played saftey during the walking wounded edition of our secondary.

To All,
Found out we had another Player that left the program. Will Boule OL, Freshman last year, don't think he played any last year. Like I have said numerous times, this happens every year, we always lose a few Players. The lost that surprised me was losing Joe Douglas, DL, from Hanford, maybe football wasn't his thing, just hope he and Will remained to get their education. Wish both Athletes the best of luck in whatever they decide to do. Vic Wallace
