Gonzaga guard considering Weber State

Gonzaga guard/wing Bryan Alberts decided to transfer about a month ago and is considering Weber State among his destinations.

An interesting note: He's trying to graduate this summer, which would make him immediately eligible with 2 years to play 2. That would be a nice pickup to grab a junior with some D-I experience over bringing in a 6th true freshman. http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2017/apr/12/sophomore-guard-bryan-alberts-leaving-gonzagas-pro/

Gonzaga had one of the best guard lineups in the country this season, so I don't see it as a huge knock that he didn't play much. Was a 3-star out of high school.

My post from the linked thread:

Relative to the young man getting a lot of buzz that is transferring from New Mexico. I'll put this out right now:

If Alberts were given the same opportunity to be that kind of volume shooter, the comparison would not be close. Alberts is a better shooter and his numbers would be impressive. Indeed, Alberts would be getting a lot of attention if given similar opportunity. He is going to be a pleasant surprise to some given fan base out there.

He would be welcomed with opened arms.

Alberts would be a welcome addition to our program. He is the perfect fit. He is the type of player that has driven Weber State success. Hard working, tough, talented, and a kid of high character. I would definitely welcome him to Weber State. He is the type of guy any program would like.

What we know...he has visited Weber and is planning a visit to Hawaii. He could schedule more visits, but right now, he only has two. What does that say? He is, currently, most interested in Weber and Hawaii. How do these two programs compare?

I hope he makes the right choice! With Senglin leaving, Weber is the prefect place for him to blossom!
He has added another, it looks like anyway.

I would guess Long Beach St.....he is from SoCal and has probably had enough of the winters up north...
I don't think his leaving GU had anything to do with climate. He will go where he feels the best fit for him. That may be LBS, who knows. He is taking his time because he wants to get it right this time. You have to respect that. The coaches at those institutions will also have to feel that he is the right fit for them. It's a two way street and everybody wants to get it right on a transfer. :thumb: :thumb:

I don't think people in Utah realize how good the weather is here and how often the sun shines. A lot of people are moving here for the great climate. Way better weather than Spokane!

I've done a bit of research. Granted, we don't know how accurate Verbal Commits is, but they do a solid job and can be trusted. Right now, out of the three teams Alberts is considering, Weber is the only school with an available grant. Long Beach and VCU are both at 13. Yes, teams can cut by July1. However, they don't necessarily have to add by that deadline. Nonetheless, most schools are going to set their rosters by that date. With July 1 quickly approaching he probably needs to make a decision soon. One major issue with a late decision, is that he is missing the chance to play rat ball/summer ball and to build chemistry with his team.

Other factors that could help Weber. Our program consistently is getting players to the next level. If not the NBA, Weber alum are playing overseas and succeeding. Head coach Randy Rahe has connections at Gonzaga that might help, if Alberts is still close with that schools coaching staff. Finally, Weber is at the top of the Big Sky and has a great chance to go dancing next year. Especially, if Weber has 6-9 Brekkot Chapman playing the 3, 6-9 Michal Kozak at the 4, and 6-9 Zach Braxton at the 5. I'm really starting to like the 17-18 edition of Weber State Basketball. Alberts will bring even more experience and talent to an already deep and talented team. Getting an experienced wing at his height, who has PG handles and speed, would be huge for Weber State.

I agree with what you are saying Tal.

The only thing I would add is if he is looking to be close to home, then he will choose LBS. If he is looking for winning, development, a chance at the next level, and stability, then he will choose Weber. I don't think VCU is a valid choice for him. He would be in the same boat that he was at GU. Also, I don't know who VCU would cut in order to make room for Bryan.

Long Beach lost Noah Blackwell, a soph pg who transferred because he didn't want to sit behind Justin Bibbins for another year....after Noah transferred, Bibbins decided to transfer to Utah as a grad transfer leaving Long Beach State without a pg....I still think Alberts will end up in SoCal....

Oh, and by the way, if you grew up in Orange County, spent a few years in Spokane, and then had a choice between going to Long Beach or Ogden.......no contest......no offense.....I spent a few days in Long Beach last summer......Long Beach is really nice....

What I said.

Here is LBS's situation. They graduated nobody, they had 5 players leave the team, they signed 6 new players (3 frosh and 3 JCs), they signed a JC point, they signed a freshman point, They already have one 2018 commitment, and they have 13 on scholarship right now. They are thin on big men and I don't see them cutting one of them for another guard. That leaves 3 or 4 guards that could be cut, but they all are rated just as highly as Bryan. If they want him and he wants them, LBS will have to cut someone good. I'm not saying that they won't cut someone, just that it wouldn't be easy for them. VCU is in the same boat. They would also have to cut a very good player to bring in Alberts. Of course, he could walk on anywhere he wants. If he can't live without the So Cal weather, then he probably will walk on at LBS. It's all good. Our program is solid and will be for quite a while. We have an open spot and will not have to cut anyone. We also are in a strong enough situation where we are not in any rush to fill our opening. WSU is a great place to be right now and into the future. Our program is everything I would want it to be. :thumb: :thumb:

FWIW, I grew up in Orange County and I much preferred Ogden, but that's just me
I spent a year there one week. I was glad to get out of there alive. If you are on or near the coast it is fairly nice. anywhere else is not that great. I was 15 miles from the coast and it was hot and smoggy. I was glad to get out of there. :yikes:

It gets really hot around August/September. Otherwise the weather is mostly pretty nice. I have just always preferred cold weather

Mistake to try and speak for others-- I've been to the Long Beach area a whole handful of times throughout my life and it really IS no contest: Ogden, easily. In fact, SoCal in general does nothing for me maybe with the exception of San Diego, but would still NEVER want to live there.
