Gonzaga guard considering Weber State

Hmmm interesting subject... I spent plenty of time down in Long Beach and have visited the Pike and Rainbow Harbor several times. When it comes to comparing the two places, I don't think it's even close! Long Beach is an urban jungle with a beech. Ogden and Utah might be the number one destination for natural beauty in the U.S. If you want to just walk on the beach or surf, Long Beach is cool. However, if you actually like to do activities, it's not even close. Ogden has every outdoor activity imaginable within 30 minutes. Your not doing anything in Long Beach without driving hours through So Cal traffic, (another reason Utah and Ogden are better).

The economy in Utah is widely considered to be #1 in the U.S. With so much opportunity, Utah is a good place to make connections. Silicon Slopes is really starting to rival Silicon Valley and is much easier to break into. However, our realestate is still affordable. Ogden is also only 30 mins from Salt Lake, which has its own awsomeness. The area really does blow Spokane and Long Beach out of the water.

I have heard many people say they like the weather and four seasons in Utah better, I'm one of them. The dry climate makes the high and low temps feel nice. The fall and spring weather is picturesque and we are just far enough north for summers to be the right amount of hot and far enough south that most winters aren't bad. We maybe have 4 weeks of cold shitty winter weather and we still get nice sunny days in the middle. Feels like it's sunny here every day! Utah might have the most daylight of anywhere in the U.S. due to being in the western part of the mountain time zone. In fact, if you google sunset times, you will see we have a full 58 minutes of extra evening daylight than Long Beach. Not to mention we have ridiculous sunsets you can see from campus. Also, the women here might be the most beautiful anywhere.

The ocean is beautiful, but over rated. I'd rather be at pineview any day. The water is not choppy, salty and you don't need to worry about sharks, jellies etc. Utah and Ogden really have it all. Dude is making a mistake if he goes to Long Beach, especially considering we just got another guard in the league. Let's hope he sees the light and comes to Weber, if not we don't want him but will wish him luck!

Gotta love all the pro-Ogden comments and I thoroughly agree. Personally, I wouldn't give up an inch of Ogden for all of Long Beach (been there and quite enjoyed my time. It is a sweet place to visit.). However, Ogden is my home. It is my bastion of solitude. I love to travel but it's my favorite place to return to. It isn't fair to compare homes.

To me, the better arguments are why he should come here.

A. Weber is a stable and competitive program. Consistently at the top of the Big Sky and involved in the post-season practically every year.

B. Weber has three guys playing in the league. One in the top league in Europe and a few others doing quite well for themselves in Europe or overseas.

C. Weber's facilities are top notch and that includes resources available for an athletes healthcare, nutrition, physical development, living area, and finally academic endeavors.

D. Playing time...Alberts has a chance to blossom at Weber State and to develop his game into a possible all-conference selection that'll catapult him into a future career playing basketball. Oh, the Jazz are 30 miles south and scout our practices and games. We do play in there arena once a year...

Fun thread!

Going to add one more -- fans.

Tough going from an atmosphere of rabid Zags fans to Long Beach. Weber State at least puts him in a community that enjoys basketball and supports their team.

Spent the afternoon up at Snow Basin for Blues, Brews, & BBQ, a free weekly event near Ogden. Temps in the 80s, blue skies, great bands, great food, great atmosphere, and a great crowd. If you can't find something great to do around the Ogden area, you must be locked up. There is so much going on, I can't get to it all. Ogden is a great place to live and play. Many people are moving in from around the country and it is just making it better. It isn't really a secret, but people are finding out that Ogden is one of the best places to live in the entire country.

Thank you Mr. Chairman of the "Ogden for All-American City" committee....or is it President of the Chamber of Commerce??? I don't particularly like southern california or cities by and large but I am not in my early 20's and a college athlete either....we will see which influence wins out....just curious, has there been any recruiting wars between Long Beach and Weber in the past??

Not that I can remember. In the past two weeks, we lost one to Syracuse and another to a German pro team. I'm sure that, in the last 50+ years, there must have been a player or two. When Tark was there we had a good rivalry going with them. There were some fun games in that series.

There have been many good games between the two. the very first game played in the Dee Events Center was between Weber State and Long Beach State. I believe Long Beach State was nationally ranked and heavily favored. Weber played really well and won the game 99-96 (I think that was the final score) in overtime. There have been many more memorable games between the two schools.

This will be an interesting week for Bryan. If VCU or LBS really want him, they will have to cut a player from their respective teams by Friday or they will only be able to bring him in as a walk on. In both cases they would be cutting a 3 star guy, thus putting another good player on the market for someone else. Like I said, interesting.

It is quite possible that Bryan comes from a wealthy family and does not require a scholarship. If that is true, then everyone's options are wide open. He seems like a thoughtful young man. I'm sure he will make the right choice for him and his future. :thumb: :thumb:

I sure hope a thoughtful (and talented) young man would put more consideration into what's best for his studies and basketball career than a much less important-- even silly-- argument of which is a better town to spend a couple of years in, even thought we all know it's Ogden  .

I'm wondering if Alberts is waiting until after July 1 to see if any "bigger" programs have roster spots available, or he might be working really hard this Summer to finish classes so that he can transfer to another program.

Personally, I just don't see any other option but Weber out of the three schools.

We are the band camp kid waiting anxiously at the last minute to find out if our hot, cheerleader, dateless neighbor girl will go to prom with us. Meanwhile she is hoping that a jock will get dumped at the last minute so she doesn't have to go with her back up plan to prom. In this situation, I rooting for the band kid.

That may be how some fans feel. However, I know that is not how the team or coaches are feeling. They like the young man, and would welcome him into the family, but we are a strong unit right now. nobody needs a date to the prom. He would probably make us better, but we are certainly not needy at all.

Your analogy seems to work better when it comes to at large selections to post season play. :coffee:

looks like an off the bench kid for Weber vs end of bench kid at Zaga....no chance of being all BSC kid
I disagree on both of those counts. From what I have seen, I would think that he could compete nicely for a starters role and that he does have the potential to be all league. Of course, doing those things would be totally up to him and the work he wants to put in. Nothing is given to anybody, except the opportunity. Bryan would have the opportunity to be successful.

Our team is working really hard right now. This has the potential to be a special year coming up. If Bryan is a part of that, then great. If he is not a part of that, it will still be a special year.

I think all opinions on Alberts are fair game right now. I'm mostly intrigued because he is coming from a great program. What are board members opinions based on? He hasn't scored much, or seen a lot of action in his two years. And the Zags have blown out a ton of WCC opponents. So you'd guess he might have seen more time on the court. Is he a slasher and can get to the basket? Seems like that is the wing we need. What I know is he is smart (graduating in 3 years); he comes from a top program; a few Zag twitter fans took the time to wish him well (wouldn't it be better if they were ticked off he was leaving); and he has Weber on his list and we have a spot. Seriously, can anybody break down his game a bit more?

3 point shooter...sub 40% from field each season....seems to take care of the ball....some some minutes a couple years ago...scrub last season....drop in class should lead to a serviceable BSC player

His percentages suffered from spotty playing time. His playing time suffered because GU brought in some graduate transfers who were better athletes and took his projected minutes. Those kind of things can happen. Insiders in the GU program report that he was the best shooter on the team last year. He just didn't get the chance to show it. He appears to be a high major talent with mid major athleticism. He has NBA range on his jumper and has the handles to get to the rim, score or pass. He played point guard in HS but may be more suited to play on the wing. Again, insiders within the GU program think he has the potential to be All BSC. My opinion is that he is a longer, more athletic version of Davion Berry. After college, he will likely be playing for money somewhere. He is on the high end of mid major talent. He would have a chance to be a very good player for us.

trengths:
Alberts possesses a solid frame with good length and he's bouncy as well. He has mature mid-range game considering his youth and can score in a variety of ways. His pull-up game is efficient and he can get to the rim off the dribble (explosive 1st step) as well.
Weaknesses:
Alberts has a solid all-around game already and it will be interesting to see how much he develops in the coming seasons. His jump shot is solid, but it needs to get more consistent out to the stripe. In addition, making his teammates better with his skill-set will elevate his stock as well.
Bottom line:
Alberts is an intriguing talent. He has an innate scorer who can get his own shot at any time. With maturity and experience his game should continue to evolve. As his fundamentals (jump stop) and overall skills continue to get better, he has a chance to be an elite shooting guard prospect. Per ESPN, who had him a top 250 kid in highschool....Might be the best shooter at ZAGA per oldrunner...however when the lights go on and the defense tees up ...some kids who shoot well in practice and scrimmages cool off.. Did not know he has 2 years left as a grad transfer....so grad school programs likely to be more meaningful to him t for picking a school than a one and done kid....ESPN report does support him having potential all BSC talent ....maybe will blossom if he gets PT and a drop in competition.... Do not see him as a lead guard and Harding will be very tough to beat out at the 2, looks like the 3 is his best shot to start at Weber

Thanks to both Scout and Oldrunner. Great information to digest.

I do know that being eligible right now is a big deal for me. And Scout brought up the graduate degree programs -- which I had wondered about. Not sure how Weber stacks up there compared to Long Beach State. That may well be his biggest concern. And definitely a #3 at Weber. Seems like his game would be a nice fit for us though. We are going to be an interesting team this year and next. His game, as described, would be a really good fit for us.
