head football coach

From what I understand, Angus McClure has been intensely recruiting California since 2004 when he coached at Nebraska, Buffalo and UCLA. My fellow High School Coaches know him well and like him a lot. Sacramento State needs a Head Coach that will retain a majority of these talented players, especially from Northern California. Just take a look at the history and relationship he has with Eddie Vanderdoes from Placer High School. NorCal High School Coaches want their elite players to play for Angus. Wherever he coaches. He turns these kids into productive men, on and off the field. Go Hornets!

I think most here recognize what Angus McClure could bring to the table. His ability to work his way up the FBS ladder since he left Sac State is impressive, especially staying at UCLA with 3? different head coaches.

Does anyone know what his career aspirations are? Does he have a interest in being a head coach, leaving FBS after so many years? Did he apply for the job the last time it was open?

I may be in the minority here, but I for 1, would like to see Sac State keep Coach Sears as the head coach. I would like them to hire a full time D Coordinator though. Based on personal experience with Coach Sears and his staff, the kids believe in them. Something I am not to sure was happening towards the end of the prior regime.

The woes we have had on defense is nothing new to this team or for this conference, in fact every week some team in this conference gets torched. Coach Sears wasn't in place when the last two recruiting classes have been brought in, so he is working with what he has...remember this staff had the presence of mind to move Sankey to MLB, which has worked out pretty well (well at least until he tore his MCL :? ).

From the recruiting side I have seen changes with this staff, prior years they wouldn't offer until January being afraid they would loose players to bigger schools at the last moment. I have been around the coaches this year when they have offered a couple of our players and talked up the program...early and often...They are pretty honest with the kids telling them we want you and know you will help us early, but if a Pac 12 school comes calling we totally understand.

Yes I am frustrated with some of the results, not so much with Cal Poly, but the MSU game was a heart breaker, and ISU we layed an egg, though they are better than everyone could have thought. But not frustrated enough to throw the baby out with the bath water.

So with all this rambling said, I wouldn't mind doing a search for a good DC, even if they came from the JC ranks.

Names I'd like to add as well :

Jim Leavitt - currently 49er LBs Coach; defensive minded coach who turned around S. Florida as HC.
Jeff Hammerschmidt - currently STC at Colo St; former DC @ St. Mary's, Montana and So. Utah.
Turk Schonert - currently an OC in the CFL; experience as OC and QBC in NFL & UFL.

I am curious what process is currently happening. If Sears is the guy how long will we wait to tell him. The faster the better in my mind. I just hope we do not do interviews with other coaches and then make Sears the HC. That would hurt recruiting. I know he has put out a lot of offers already. Local players as well. Hopefully we can get 2 straight years of local talent at Sac State

If you're going to throw out the name of Leavitt, you had better consider the assistant that made his success at USF possible: Mike Canales.

FYI, Leavitt didn't "turn around" USF. He was the program founder.

Baring a major collapse or something else unexpected in the last four games I expect a announcement at the end of the season and to see Sears coaching the Hornets in 2015. The "interim" has already been removed from his title on Hornetsports.com . Interestingly Macriss is still listed as Interim AD.

I agree. Sears is on track to deliver a stereotypical middle of the road, nothing special season. Given the remaining schedule this team should do no worse than 6-6. Anything above that is a bonus to Hornet Nation. Given the circumstances that should be enough for him to be kept on board.

How about Colo St's OC, Dave Baldwin? He extensive OC experience. He was also the HC at CSUN and SJSU. I'm not convinced by Sears.

I would definitely second this!

I believe if we win these last two games Sears should be hired. He would have won 7 Games. As a first year HC that was hired in April without picking out any of his asst except for the RB coach. I have heard to many good things about him not to give a chance. Seems he wants to be here. Players love him. Adminstration seems to like him as well. Alumni are coming back. To many good things in a positive direction

Would love Coach Sears to get a win over UC Davis. And most of all the seniors and all the Hornet players who have been thru so much change and come together and fought thru it.

Let's see if he steps up and conveys the keys to a victory for the Hornets. The Hornets will be favored yet again in a game that somehow seems to be very intimidating and mysteriously brings out some kind of curse of Davis over Sac State which has resulted in a huge all time advantage for the Ags in terms of wins

If Sac State shows up and plays like Sac State can play with all of the talent on this team it will be a good Causeway for the green and gold as it is a huge game for the Hornets and the football program. A winning season is on the line. Seems to be motivation for the Hornets indeed. This team has a shot at being only one of two Hornet teams in our Div 1-AA history to capture 7 wins in a season!!! And a win would be so wonderful for this 2014 team with all of the record breaking efforts in Hornet football history that this team already holds.

Sure the team knows all this and trust they are hungry for a Causeway Classic win, just like all the Hornet teams of the past 60 years.!!!

Was wonderful as well when a decision is going to be made. Wonder what the plan is?

I did email Coach Sears and congratulated him on the win over Davis and a winning season.

He thanked me and gave the credit , as he does, to the seniors and the whole team and said he looked forward to bringing championships to Sac State.

Hope we hear something soon.

Go Hornets!!!

And Stingers UP!!! Stingers UP seems to be the current motto.

"No decision" better be the decision at this point of the game. If they intended to make a change it should have been done before or immediately after the last game. To make a change now would be disastrous.
It generally takes about 6 weeks to select a coach, which is basically the letter of intent day, it would kill recruiting. In my opinion Coach Sears has done a good job keeping the team together and unified after Coach Sperbeck's late resignation, compiling a 7-5 record & winning the Causeway. The team won every game they were favored to win except ISU which turned out to far better team than anyone expected at the time. Realistically this team was a couple of bad breaks and a major injury from being a playoff team. Coach Sears deserves the chance to prove that he can continue to be successful as our Head Coach.

I think everything stays the course given the pending leadership change at President. Gonzo probably would have made Macriss permanent by now if he intended to do so. He is probably going to leave that up to the next Pres and because of this we are not seeing an announcement with Sears. My guess is both stay on board until the new President makes a move on the AD role.
