Injury Bug

Just announced he had a "grade 1 separation" in his shoulder, which is the least serious of the seperations that can take place. No bone damage, but some potential tears or ligament damage. They are saying it is more painful than anything else, but he actually could play, though it would be very painful to do so.
Hey Dude;
Sounds about as good news as we could expect. Where did you see this announcement?

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2016/sep/12/kupp-questionable-for-northern-iowa/

"Kupp suffered a Grade 1 shoulder separation – the least-serious type. That means a simple sprain (stretched or partly torn) to the acromioclavicular, or AC joint, at the top of the shoulder. There is no separation of bones.

Kupp is questionable for Saturday, coach Beau Baldwin said Monday afternoon.

“He’s practiced so much that we’ll obviously be very smart with what happens in practice this week,” Baldwin said. “And then we’ll get a feel closer to game time with where he is with his shoulder and AC joint.”'

I hope he sits. I think it's a very winnable game without him and the WSU win gives a little cushion for this brutal start. We need to be at our best for the conference schedule.

Not saying I feel this way, but I almost wonder how NFL scouts would feel about him sitting out. Could it bring up questions of his durability? I certainly think that was a knock in Adams.

They were talking about it at the end of the Patchins, Lukens, Osso show. They said it was on something EWU released, but I haven't seen the release. I was just trying to type it up while they were talking, and finding the injury on the internet to copy and paste.

When they say, "lost Chris Schlichting to a shoulder injury," that sounds like a long term statement. Anyone know the degree of his injury? Is he lost for the season?

I'll bet he suits up this weekend. Not saying he'll play, though.

On the "injury seriousness scale," this is pretty comparable to his hip pointer from last year. He missed the second half of the UNI game and was back next week. Hopefully, he goes no-contact all week and makes a game-time decision to play.

If not, can't fault him one bit. But this kid has big 'ol balls and hates sitting on the sideline.

Also, sounds like Schlichting is questionable, which I suppose is good. I was worried he might be out for a few weeks as well.

The coaches are playing chess all week in prep for the game on Saturday. As long at there is a possibility Kupp could play the Panthers HAVE to prepare for him being on the field. Heck even if he is only a decoy he will attract double teams and allow another receiver to be open.

OR you could be like Alex Grinch and try to cover him in a soft zone with a linebacker.... I still can't believe WSU tried that.

Everyone is questionable going into Saturday and I think it will remain that way. My guess is we get both LB's back, and possibly Sommer.

I would guess Kupp sits more as precautionary than anything this week. We should be able to torch UNI's secondary either way as they are their weakest link...

I'm stunned how it seems like we are always so beat up so early in the year. We've still got four weeks before an off week, so we need the trainers to work some magic.

I'm with you. It's very strange how we always seem to get beat up so badly early on. I know other teams deal with injuries and it's part of the game, but at the end of the NDSU game we were down SEVEN starters. And by starters, I mean guys who started in the WSU game. SEVEN.

Just read that Kacmarcik is out for at least an additional week. Karstetter is obviously done for the year, and everyone else is listed as "questionable", other than the guys like Forstel (sp) and Bauman that have been out since Spring Ball.

A lot of this goes to why I am so opposed to the way we schedule. I feel like we just beat the hell out of our guys. We've played two games that have gone down to the final seconds. Those close, competitive ball games require a LOT from your top guys, and aside from putting them in the firing line, you don't get your reserves any time to get up to speed.

Take a look at how these top FBS teams schedule... they'll play maybe 4 or 5 competitive games all year. The other 2/3 of the season are spent pummeling teams. The only soft games we get in a season are against the bottom tier of our own conference. And unlike the FBS teams, we've got 22 less scholarship players.

Agreed, that tells me Grinch does not respect FCS opponents. Thats two years in a row, wonder when he will learn?

Not sure I buy that, although I understand your point. NDSU has played two top 10 FCS teams in their first two games and will follow that up with an FBS game against Iowa this week. Granted, they earned a bye between games due to ESPN, but I think it has more to do with bad luck than anything.

I get the argument, but Dopa is right in some respects. Playing tough teams, on the road, in back to back weeks is going to bring some injuries and unfortunately we are starting to see it. Same thing happened in 2011 when we played a PAC 12 team then went on the road to a MVFC team the next week. Back to back tough road games will wear on you...the one thing NDSU has going for them is both of their tough games were at home, they didn't have the wear and tear of the travel to deal with...

I don't know that I buy into the train of thought that we have more injuries because we've played two tough games or that playing in a dome makes for more injuries. I don't believe that more players are injuries in an away game vs home game.
What does a blown Achilles have to do with any of these?
Cooper was injured by a defended getting a free shot on him because of a missed tackle.
Two linebackers were injured in the first game.
Was Schlichting's shoulder injury due to being in a dome, away game, or two tough games in a row?
What caused Shaq's hamstring injury?
It is a physical game and every team has some injuries to a certain extent, but it comes down to next man up.

Close, competitive games get you beat up. And it isn't just physical, it also exacts an emotional strain. You are forced to keep your rotations very tight, so it's primarily your starters every play.

We have routinely played schedules with an extraordinary degree of difficulty. And every year, we seem unusually beat up a couple of weeks into the season. The issue is that it has become an every-year occurance, so it is no longer unusual. A lot of teams can go an entire year without seven starters being down simultaneously. We managed to do it before the end of the second game.

What we don't know is how many of these kids just have a little knock versus kids with more serious injuries that miss games. Hopefully, we'll find out that most of these kids are good to go this weekend. However, one thing that seems to have happened a lot in the recent past is "questionable" injuries that seem to last multiple games. With UNI and NAU around the corner, we can't afford to be down several players.

We're good, but we're not good enough to beat quality teams without our best players on the field.
