It's time to move on

We would have been much better off with Dalton - no doubt. He might not been the best recruiter ever, but to say that Downing is better is a joke. I see that our only two first team big sky conference choices were both Dalton recruits - pretty clear evidence that Scott D. has not upped the ante in that department. Also, Scott has had the benefit of many more scholarships during his tenure - Dalton had far fewer to work with. From a coaching standpoint there is no argument - Scott D and his staff are not even in the same discussion as Dalton and his staff. That is an old discussion though.

The whole it takes a long time to turn around a FB program is a load of BS. Look at Nick Saban at Alabama, Fairchild at CSU, Calhoun at AFA. It can be done quickly and there should be marked improvement from year to year. There has been no improvement from year to year - 1 win a year is a joke. The fact is Scott D came in thinking he was the best thing since sliced bread, blew up the program, ran off all the upperclassmen and achieved absolutely nothing.

I think Hinrichs does deserve credit for the BBall coaches. Maybe Jay needs to hire a football AD - since he only seems to be able to do good things for BBall - must be his Kansas roots. The biggest problems I have with him is he turned the best program into the worst, has alienated the supporters and alumni and throws his hat in the ring for other jobs. That being said, I would give Hinrichs another year or two provided he shows he can make the right decision to can Downing. If he doesn't run them both out of town.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. When I take over this program, I'm hiring uncfootballrules. Not as a coach necessarily, but as the guy that says, " Hold on...let's apply some logic here."
I saw the Big sky selections the other day, and said nothing. I saw the CSU/Fairchild comparison the other day, and said nothing.
I think we need to wipe the slate clean. Hinrichs and Downing need to go. Bring in Joe as AD, at least. I mean seriously...which coach could Joe possibly alienate?
I like Scott, and I really do appreciate his efforts, but we need to head in a new direction, ASAP.

how many teams did he beat with Big Sky talent?

What's your point? He coached a DII team. Players were recruited from the DII talent pool and he did fairly well. Not sure if your argument holds water considering Downings record.

And those same DII players have been the "leaders" of the teams the last three years. The seniors this year and every year of the Downing era have been Kay Dalton recruits with poor work ethics and bad attitudes

Oh yeah, guys like Christian Sarmento and Jacob Thornbrue have terrible work ethics and attitudes, give me a break. The problem with this team is gameday coaching, play calling, strategy, etc., and don't give me the 'Downing doesn't call the plays' crap, because he's the one that calls for punts on 4th & 1 on the opponents' 40 yard line and the like.

Oh way to mention two guys who have good work ethics from the Dalton era. I betcha I could name a roster worth of guys from the past three years who werent willing to pay the price to play. I will hold my tongue to name names because I know the players and parents read this and I would hate to point out the truth to many of them.
Dont get me wrong, there have been good players who were recruited by Dalton but ugh...

I said it someplace else and it does warrant repeating but it's been nice not having to read any police blotter stories this season so Downing deserves credit for that. And I would say that yeah, he has Dalton beat there, we haven't had anyone assaulting anyone over text messages or any racial incidents or knives pulled with Downing's kids and I do appreciate that and he deserves credit there. It's just unfortunate it hasn't translated into wins.

I think there is decent talent. I watched all but 2 games this season and except for the Montana game I never sat there and thought, oh we are boys against men out there. A good example is Texas State, we had them beat dead to rights until that blunder on the one inch line and they are in the playoffs this week. From what I saw was Texas State leaps and bounds ahead of us, not hardly.

The thing that troubles me though is that team at the start of the season that should have beat Texas State, NAU, Davis, was gone by the end of the season so that's on Downing, they packed it in about midway through the second quarter of the Montana game the season was over... :x

Rumor has it Wyoming did talk to him........but Nebraska WR's coach Ted Gilmore is their only confirmed interview at this point........Be interesting to see if Troy has heard anything regarding any possible coaching changes.......

Don't read anything into my absence. I've got two games on Saturday (GW fb, NC mbb) and have family in town for the holiday.

Plus inserting myself in the conversation adds nothing. Let the venting continue!

Oh, and happy Thanksgiving all!

Exactly. When I saw the playoff bracket, and seen Texas St. made it I was like dang a team UNC hung with and should've beat. I agree, Texas St. was no better then UNC. I mean if it wasn't for the costly turn overs, UNC could've beat them handedly. But, when you fall off like they did half way threw the season, all fingers are pointed at the coaching.

I can assure you any player that signed up to play for Dalton had a hell of a work ethic. Dalton was the gruffest nastiest SOB you ever want to meet. His practices were brutal, full pads every day when every other school in the country was in shorts by Wed. He was old school and hard nosed. That is an edge this team lost. The fact that you think his recruits had poor work ethics is a joke - please know what you are speaking about before you make up stories to throw out there.

Yeah, Dalton was a terriable recruiter, he got UNC slouches like Jackson, Wlison and Doughty. He was also such a bad recruiter that the only retention that Downing made from his staff was his recruiting coordinator.

As I have said before I am not sure Dalton was the right coach for the Big Sky eara, he could not have been worse than Downing, and Jay treated him like crap.

While Jay does deserve some creadit for bringing in good B-Ball coaches, he has done a lot of damage too and I think we should strive for an AD who does not have trade offs like well he is good at B-Ball but sucks at football. Plus if Joe was really interested in the AD job, that would be too good an opertunity to pass up.

No knucklehead. Those players were recruited by Marty English when Joe Glenn was here. Don't give Dalton credit when he doesn't deserve it.

Is it wrong that I am checking the UNC web site and the GreeleyTribune web site several times a day, hoping that a changes has been made?

Not sure about Wilson and Doughty, but Jackson was recruited by Dalton. Dalton watched him play a B-Ball game and started on him. My understanding is this was the only FB offer he received.

I'm really starting to get nervous now. Hopefully we'll hear something one way or the other in the next day or two. Seems like Hinrichs needs to say something.

Yeah, would be nice to have an announcement one way or the other. If he is staying, they could make it less awkward by doing an update on their plans for the offseason.

if we had a real newspaper in this town, with a real reporter then i guess a question might have been asked by now. I'm going to assume they gave Scott 1 more year.

Well Bearcub, when Mustari was the sports editor for the Trib, everyone bitched because he was too critical of UNC sports. Now, we want someone to write a story about the football situation at UNC, and I'm sure some reporter is saying, " I'm not touching that one with a 10 foot pole." In the meantime, Sam is saying," Told you so."
