Reasons why we need a new coach:
1) We only won 1 game for the second year in a row 2 and 21 is un- accepatable

2) We were shut out by a NON-PLAYOFF DIVISION II team AT HOME!!!!!!!!

3) Excuses for the teams inability to be copetitive most of the season.

4) Winning helps recruiting and we aint winning so recruiting is going to suffer.

5) We as alumni and fans deservere better!!!!

This is just a beginning list. I know some of you will agree and feel free to add to this list. Some of you will think that everything is okay and the "coach" should stay. do me a favor and tell me why you think he should stay.

I thought Chadron was supposed to win the national championship and they don't even make the playoffs? If that isn't the lowest point in our school's history then I don't know what is. I knew Chadron wasn't worth all the hype, I just grossly overestimated our team. It appears that we would be lucky to be a top 50 D-2 team.

My feeling is that downing might be the worst coach in the history of the sport of football but I still think it is too early to know for sure. IMO he deserves one more season--no more no less. If we don't go .500 next year then he has to go!

I agree that he aint going nowhere so it's a waste of time to debate it. But even taking it one step further, who would you get? You'd have to roll the dice on some nobody and although that could turn out great it would also be starting once again from scratch. So either way you're going to lose a lot next year anyway...

Chadron is the #2 team in the country according to this weeks coaches poll. We host a game this weekend, and next weeked. Remember those good old days?

Chadron St? They must have just started their program because during my days of playing at UNC I never heard of them. But good luck and I hope you guys enjoy your one playoff game.

While we don't know who you are, you have stated in the past that you were at the coaches meeting last year when Downing started so you either played for him or coached with him. We know that you're not with the team now. I would like to know why you don't like him. Did you get fired? Did you quit? Did you transfer? Why don't you like Scott Downing? Give specific reasons please.

I will enjoy watching my team play over thanksgiving weekend. :D
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

You want reasons to fire Scott Downing? Here's a few:
1. Numerous off the field issues (Cozad, Jacob Carlson......etc.)
2. 21 losses in 2 years
3. a 31-0 loss to a Division 2 team.....Look, Chadron is a good team, but there is no excuse to not score against them on your home field.
4. "We're a Division 2 team playing a Division 1 schedule."
5. Since Scott Downing has been coach, the UNC defense gave up 30+ points in 12 games.
6. In 2 homecoming games under Downing, UNC has been shutout.
7. 2 wins in 2 years----1 Big Sky win in 2 years.

Do you want me to go on?

Allright, the season is over so my self imposed ban is lifted. :D

There is no doubt Downing should go. There is no way to argue otherwise that I can see. This team is nothing short of a disaster. Say all you want about the last few games, it is still a bunch of losses (to basically the conference cellar dwellers) at home.

We have to be loud to effect any change. Start with the AD - he is a joke. Send Downing out the same day.

I will lob the first vote for Bob Stitt at Mines to be given the job. UNC ties, used to winning with no resources. I could go on.

Now that I said all that, Downing isn't going anywhere with that third year left on his contract. :?

I'm not sure if any of the people who post on hear have ever been on a college football team or if any have ever been on a team that has changed an entire coaching staff. From most of the posts that are on this board it doesn't seem like it but, there might be couple. It is tough for a coach to come into a program that has had a losing record (2-9, 4-7) and turn it into a winning program. Changing players attitudes about it being alright to lose.
Thats with not having multiple off-the-field incidences. On top of the off field stuff, having upper-classmen not buy into his coaching philosophy. Having multiple people quit because they didn't like how strict the new program was. Having multiple people leave because they didn't like a coach that is no longer here. Having only 23 players that were on the team last year to this year. Playing the toughest schedule in FCS.
Downing hasn't ever used these as excuses!
At the beginning of the year this team had no confidence and now they believe in themselves and that they are as good as any team in the big sky.
The team has some awesome young talent that was recruited by Downing that will be seen next year!
Downing is a great coach and not only will he finish his contract this next year he will also have his contract extended because of how much better the team will be next year!

He's going to be here so I'm fine with that at this point. But another 1 win season isn't going to cut it. So we've heard all the excuses I'd now like to see some turn around. The last 4 games were a glimmer of hope. It is a lot more encouraging to at least be in those games instead of getting blown out. They basically went 2-2 over that stretch and that was all in conference.

So how about NOT scheduling Chadron and San Diego next year? You want a D-II, OK, how about Western State? You want a non scholarship I-AA, OK, how about Butler, Jacksonville, Valparaiso, LaSalle, Marist...

We need to be a lot smarter about how we schedule... take the Purdue money and get up to 63 scholarships, get a couple cupcakes on the schedule, win a couple Big Sky games and we could be 5-6 easy next year or at least 4-7 in a worst case scenario. We'd all feel a lot better if that happened.

If you knew the lack of respect that Coach Downing had for all that UNC had accomplished before he even new that they played football here let alone got the head coaching job you all might have a different opinion. One thing that really sticks out to me is that he didn't want recruits to see the Division II National Championship trophies or the 2002 Semifinalist trophy. I do not have anything personal against coach downing in fact he is a good guy overall but I played with guys that helped win those trophies and I think that he doesnt respect the work that went into winning those trophies with less to work with than the NDSU's of the D-II world at that time. So understand that he IS NOT A BAD PERSON he is JUST WRONG FOR THIS JOB!!!!! He and the AD shut Barleycorns out and that pissed me off also!!!!! Is that the kind of thing you were looking for ?

Some of us played for UNC and made it worthy of moving to D-I. You are a player on the current team and the last two years you and your teamates have made "NC football" a laughing stock. Coaches coach but players lose on the field. How many times did you contribute to the team winning this year? 2008 Big Sky Champs??? Try last place in the Big Sky again. In fact you probably should have been in lifting instead of wasting time on that last message.

Sorry for the outburst Bear Fans.

This team is on the rise. Obviously you haven't seen us in the last 4 games. We should have been 4-0. We still finished with a 1-11 record and there is no excuse for that. Next year we will win games. A big Sky Championship is not out of our reach.

No this isn't Harvey and he is a good friend of mine so leave him out of this he himself is also a part of UNC's winning tradition not the poor product that we are subjected to now days. "NC Bear" this isnt about when I played or what I played I lost a total of 15 games in my four years playing for the Bears the past two years there have been a total of 21 losses. Trust me Greeley is a much better town to live in when the Football team at UNC is winning.

Bear2012, your optimism is greatly appreciated but the last four dont make a program on the rise. Actual winning makes a program on the rise. a Big Sky chapionship is not possible until you can compete consistently with EVERYBODY in the Big Sky. On the rise isnt being shut out at home by a D-II team(no disrespect) either or not scoring a point the last two homecoming games. On the rise huh? You will graduate before the "rise" happens(unless of course you plan on getting a PhD LOL).

There are plenty of former players that post on here. Not sure what that has to do with anything though. There are plenty of fans who know more about football then current (or past) players. The fact is, no one is happy with where we are at. And you are right, under the old staff there were a couple of bad years but nothing like we see now and there was less money and less scholarships then too.

At the end of the day, the program needs to turn around. The question is are we on the right track with the right coach, etc. Personally, I don't think so. The fact is though Downing will get one more year to prove himself. Nothing would make me happier than if I am wrong on my read and we have a great season next year. By the way 4 wins is not a great season and I would without a doubt say a 6-28 coach should be shown the door. Maybe the better question is what will it take next year to show that he is the right guy?

Geez I miss the days when we just complained about high beer prices. Oh wait, I said "we" and I meant "I". NC Bear, put down the crack pipe. We will be triumphant again, and I've said that I hope that it was under Downing, but reality is that his coaching abilities are in question. I think that the mass player migration was due to the pall that was cast over the program when our "savior" from Nebraska went 1- and what ever his first season. BAYLOR just deep sixed a coach because he was less than successful and I fully expect the same for Downing unless he turns things around. As far as Hinrichs, he better be praying to the Basketball Gods as we speak because if we win less than 10 this year, Hinrichs will be tarred, feathered, and sent back to KU with a note attached saying "DEFECTIVE/ PLEASE DISPOSE IN A PROPER CONTAINER"
