Let the campaign begin!!!!!

When I say he's a loser I mean that literally and that the guy is programed not to win, he doesn't coach to win, doesn't coach with confidence, there is no swagger, no urgency, coaches not to lose, hence loses.

I didn't use that word arbitrarily or to be cute, I really mean he's not putting this program in a mindframe to win. They go out week after week and make mental errors, have penalties, and huge break downs resulting in melt downs and special teams blunders.

It's a culture of losing.

I think Downing has done a nice job in bringing good kids into the program and it's great to see us not on the police blotter every year like the Montana schools. He's a great guy and the players like him. I just wish he could bring better players, especially on the trenches. I know I sound like a broken record but it's failure when we can't recruit big guys who can block. You won't find them in Denver area, you must go out and find them in the mid-west. I know I posted this before, but look at SDSU and NDSU. Small farm kids. SDSU had THREE offensive linemen last year that were invited to NFL camps. There's no reason we can't recruit over the bunnies.

You know what else would be great to see....A WINNING RECORD!!!

He is not running a summer camp, he is supposed to be running a D1 football program! I don't care if everyone of his players could be in a United Way ad, and if they all get together, hold hands and sing kumbaya after every practice; with his record, he needs to be tossed out the nearest exit!

I think it was ridiculous to hire downer when he had absolutely no head coaching experience (or at least coordinator) but he was somehow qualified because he was in charge of getting coffee for the other coaches at a major D-I school. What did Hinrichs think? Somehow he knew how to be a head coach by osmosis? I think the head coach's main job is to be astute enough to surround himself with quality assistants and to motivate the players! It is up to the assistant coaches to call the X's and O's. Downing had absolutely no experience choosing assistants and no experience motivating players.

I've said it before and I still think our next head coach needs to be an up and coming D-II head coach--like Bob Stitt or the CSU-Pueblo head coach. Those guys know how to get results with extremely limited resources which is exactly how it is at UNC. We need a guy with a Marine Corps attitude and no excuses (Marines take pride in being the best fighting forces and having the worst equipment and resources).

Downer's golly gee coaching style doesn't seem to be getting it done. Or, maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions.

IF Downing is let go at the end of the year here are my top choices in order:

1. Joe Glenn
2. Marty English
3. Greg Peterson

Has anyone with inside info heard anything about Downings contract? I'm not sure it's a certain he won't be around.

I would not be surprised if he was coaching next season. I swear, he must have pics of the A.D. shagging a coed or something.

His original contract expired at the end of last year and he was signed to a one year extension so his contract is up after this season unless some back room shenanigans went down.

If he is brought back though I'm begining the active campaign to get Hinrichs out of here. :x

No joke. Don't know what to expect.

Article in Greeley Tribune today about Downing and his contract. Nothing really new, but he is defending himself and the players are on his side. It's amazing to me that these kids don't play better for him. Every player on that squad would probably run through a brick wall for him, but they're failing to execute on Saturday (Check out Tim McGraw's comments). The coaches work extremely hard and prepare for game day, yet fall short against better talent. Downing has brought in some nice talent and I look forward to a lot of the younger guys he's brought in like Jace Davis, Dylan Kildahl, Josh Morton, etc. I would also like to see Peterson's recruiting talents too. I've heard he's an excellent recruiter. I'm still on the fence about Downing and even more so after reading this article. It will be interesting to see what unfolds.

They may be supporting him in the papers but I am friends with several players and it is clear that they are all looking forward to a change.

That was a puff peice.

The actions don't back up the words, we've all seen them sleep walk through a few games this season, they fall behind and quit (Montana, Sac St, S, Dak). If I really loved my coach and he was about to get shit canned I'd be playing my ass off, or if I thought I'd lose my scholly if I loafed I'd play my ass off which I'm not seeing. Nobody gets fired up, nobody plays with a chip on their shoulder. Maybe it's just me but does anyone see any intensity on the field? I see a lot or robots out there walking around between plays 99% of the time.

Bottom line I think it starts from the top, although it ended badly even the Kay Dalton teams had some swagger and played tough... these guys seem to be soft and I think because Downing is so soft it permeates the program.

Also, a lot of penalties, the fist sign of a poorly prepared and poorly coached team.

Actually, in our 5 game losing streak (I don't count Michigan State) we only lost the penalty battle twice.

UNC 5/50 Mont 8/83
UNC 8/108 SacST 5/36
UNC 7/65 EWU 8/61
UNC 9/78 MTSU 5/29
UNC 5/50 SDSU 11/88

When it comes down to it, we are giving up 32.7 points per game and unless you have a Boise State offense, you won't win many games doing that.

Team Pts/G
Northern Arizona 20.4
Montana 22.8
Montana St. 26.9
Eastern Wash. 27.2
Sacramento St. 27.9
Weber St. 28.5
Idaho St. 29.0
Northern Colorado 32.7
Portland St. 40.0

OK so we don't commit penalties, what else that I've said can be refuted?

I'm becoming frustrated that nobody but a few of us seem to care that this program is a laughing stock.

But maybe that's my next step, apathy.

It doesn't have to be this way, what compeling reason is there that says we can't be the program South Dakota is or UC Davis or Eastern Washington even? We're not close to any of those, I just threw out a few examples, but think about it, it doesn't have to be this way.

Get some strong leadership in here, change the culture, get back some toughness and we might surprise some people.

All we hear about is the Butler Hancock renovation gave us facilities on par with or better than other Big Sky programs so that's no longer an excuse. Colorado is a destination location, people want to be here and come here... yeah Greeley isn't Shangri-La but the campus is nice, really, why do we have to be so terrible?

People, don't accept this and make excuses for a regime that HAS TOTALLY FAILED, geez.

Blofeld , UNC students and Alumni,
I'm Definitely with you all...I have watched this team blow leads, get blown out, lose at the goal line, and flat just lose. Its not one issue its a whole bunch of issues. For this school to build a D1 program it all depends on the football teams' success. I just don't see how you can give a coach a free pass year after year when HIS TEAMS are losing in a variety of ways. All I hear from everybody is "oh well were getting better and we had a bunch of injuries this year." Well hate to break it to all you Downing supporters ( if there are any out there) but good teams fight through adversity and find ways to get better. You would think that with all of the injuries the younger players would learn from their experiences and get better. WRONG! BUT not to put blame the players AT ALL!!!
In college football it falls on the people that are getting a paycheck to run the team. If they don't succeed it's on their shoulders squarely. In the past, I have emailed letters to the newspapers all around the school and to the tribune and none of those letters made any showing in the paper. I just don't understand how you build program that has stayed on the same low level for so many consecutive years. Please either FIRE Downing or let him resign and keep some face( considering his contract goes till Dec if my Memory serves correct). A change will give some optimism to the alumni and students. Most importantly it will show the people that support this school with their time and money that winning 2 games a season is unacceptable.

So I'll be expecting the announcement Monday that Downing won't be retained.

We need to get a proven leader in here that as been a head coach and won college football games.

Seems so obvious...

WTF is going on? Not a word? This move should have been made on Sunday. Two years ago Sunday. Downings office should have been boxed up before he left for Portland.

Idaho State: Our sources tell us that Idaho State has already struck an agreement with former Montana State head coach Mike Kramer. We hear Kramer will soon be named as the new head football coach

hmmm. isu is not waiting, moving forward......we won't do anything until this fundraiser friday night, betcha....well, lets hope!!
