New Coaching Candidates

Since this season is turning into a nightmarish rewind of 2011, let's talk about the future replacement of Coach Collins.

With the state of the schools program and the cheap pay, I think UNC has to look at successful Division III or below type head coaches. These are guys wanting a D1 shot, probably not paid well either where they are at and the facilities at UNC could be very inviting to them. I believe they need to be fairly young and willing to uproot. Anyways, here are a few candidates I would pursue:

Larry Kehres - Mount Union: 27 yrs, 167-7 record, 6 national championships
Lance Leipold - Wisconsin Whitewater: 5 yrs, 72-3 record, 4 national championships
Joesph Smith - Linfield: 7 yrs, 49-13 record
Ben McEnroe - Cal Lutheran: 6 yrs, 3 Championships, 3 straight years undefeated

Your thoughts......

How about let's give money and resources to the athletic department and let Collins recruit the players he needs. He has had only 1 true recruiting season.

I have mixed feelings about going along with what bearcrawls wants to do and what beardown says. I tend to lean towards beardown as it eventually comes down to more money. Whether Collins is here by the power of our AD or because he was the most qualified does not matter. We have a coaching staff in place and lets give him a chance and see where he takes us. If we want to get in the win columns and fill Nottingham we all need to get on board and give and get others to give and quit bitching and moaning. Its pathetic around here whether its lack of money , coaches, or fans !

Why would anyone want to come coach here?

I like the idea of giving him more time since if he succeeds, as an alum, he might be more likely to stay with the Bears vs using it as a quick stepping stone.

The current UNC stepping stone is 30 feet under water...

We are 1-2. I'm not sure many people really expected to beat Utah and Montana State. We have very winnable games against Weber, ISU, Portland State and maybe NAU. Let's not totally freak out yet.

Uhhh we are 1-3. And have never been in a game. btw....is it just me or does Beardown seem bipolar?

You can throw all the love, money and support you want, the guy is not qualified. Just because you've played, doesn't mean you can coach. He has not been a proven winner and he continues to prove that. He has talent on the field right now. He blamed....errrr demoted Armour in favor of Boyer. Boyer has never been an OC or has a proven track record.

More time???

dangit.....I thought I could go a whole day without mentioning Boyer's name.

But your solution is to bring in a D3 guy

Serious?? You're worse than dikebear. I think you two should get together and have circle jerk, or are you mad that Boyer didn't want to join said circle jerk. There you go again talking about your man crush on Boyer.

Hey at least Collins was willing to make a change. Unlike the previous staff who stuck with the same shitty OC for years before changing.

What change is Collins willing to make bearsfan24? Hey and great dialogue with the 5th grade playground circle jerk reference. Your quite the football one liner and knowledgeable master mind arnt you! Hey I'd even be willing to bet if you go show Collins some of your stuff he'll let you on staff there sir- hey at least he's willing to make "change" just as long as he "can trust you". I'd be willing to bet your style fits in well! HEY now maybe you can draw up some football plays for em and see if they really work in a game. Squirrel!

You're about as dumb as they get dikebear.

You should try and join the staff too, well because you're pretty good a predicting scores, so that means you must know what you're talking about.  Also maybe you could tell them how long they should be riding a horse. :D Or what is how long a horse should be riding you? I forgot.

Boyer was the OC at Mesa before coming here.

I don't think Boyer is the problem as much as needing better execution and making the plays ! What about throwing in some trick plays and misdirections. Geez, what do we have to lose ?

I don't mind the play calling. It's not great and it's not based on misdirections, etc. That's not the pro-style they're trying to install. #9 is having a terrible year so far and he's the cause of our offensive woes. Not the coaches.

There was an interesting letter to the editor in the TRIBUNE yesterday.
Just because someone put it in writing doesn't make it true, but it sounds like there are issues. I am curious about what had been going on off the field, and wonder if it had affected
Unc on the field.

Yea, I saw that to, and it really bothers me. I sure hope its not true otherwise Collins will have more bs to deal with. And more bs for us fans and alumni. Losses will be the least of his problems. Eventually all shit hits the fan! :pissed:

There has been some integrity issues mentioned with these coaches before. Let's just hope these are just rumors. I did hear that Bumpas quit last season mid-way and was let back on the squad and started the next game. That's the second time I have heard that story.

Also, if that person who wrote that letter to the Trib thinks that things were so clean under Joe Glenn, they are certainly mistaken. Talk about letting the inmates run the prison. Remember when CU was going through all that crap under Gary Barnett? There was a Denver Post article about UNC and other front-range school that mentioned UNC was pretty much doing the same thing as the Buffs (call girls, etc).

I can't believe that some of you are already giving up on Collins, and listing current D3 coaches as possible replacements. That shows how little you understand D1 college football. I'm surprised that you didn't list a high school coach or two. To fully understand the current situation at UNC, lets look at a FEW of the facts:

This years incoming Freshman class represents the FIRST year that the Bears have had all 63 full scholarships awarded to players. (63 is the NCAA limit for FCS schools) Granted that money can be divided over a maximum of 85 players, but my point is that the money available for scholarships has been behind the D1 curve since UNC moved up from D2. Other schools in the Big Sky have been at the full scholarship level for some time now, and that allows them to recruit more players. More players means more depth and more competition at each position. That translates to better players taking the field. I'm from Kansas and here our high school football programs are grouped by class, 1A - 6A. The 5A and 6A schools are almost always going to beat the 4A and smaller schools. Why? Because they have more depth. Also the bigger high schools have more coaches. Without an adequately sized coaching staff, UNC has had trouble and will continue to struggle against other Big Sky schools. Collins got to add two new position coaches this season. Before that, the offensive line coach and the defensive line coach each had other coaching responsibilities as well. Think about that. The offensive success of ANY team starts with the success of the offensive line. Until now, UNC didn't even have a full time OL coach. From what I can see, the OL is certainly playing better this year. This is major step in the right direction. More scholarships and more coaches are obvious going to help UNC compete in the Big Sky. But this improvement is not going to happen overnight. A coach has be able to recruit his own players, and develop relationships with them from the time they are in high school. Collins and his staff have not had that opportunity yet. I think that Collins deserves the change to prove himself. He stepped into a mess when he came to UNC, and that mess can't be swept away in two seasons. I think that you need to look for signs of improvement to judge his success so far. Granted improvement on the field is going to come later than sooner. Be patience. Be supportive. Show some class. One man (coach) can not fix UNC football overnight. Look at Charlie Weiss at the University of Kansas. He has two Super Bowl rings, ex-NFL coordinators on his coaching staff, and the full financial backing of the university, but he still probably won't win a game in the Big 12 this season. Do you think that he is a bad coach. Of course not. He stepped into a mess at KU, just like Collins did at UNC. Give the man a chance to make an impact on the program. It may take awhile, but UNC is moving in the right direction.

UNC has been at 63 scholarships for several years now, I believe. The adding of the coaches is brand new though. We finally have enough $$$ to hire more coaches. We are at the max number of coaches FCS allows.
