Aaron Best
Jeff Schmedding
Jimmy Lake

any other names out there? . . .Chip Kelley??? Just kidding
Jimmy Lake made $500,004. plus bonus last year. And why would be move to Cheney for less than 1/2 of that????????

It's not just about the money. Choate was the UW defensive coordinator before he took the MSU HC job. Think outside the box a little, dude.

Choate was not the defensive coordinator, he was the D-line coach. He took a pay cut coming to MSU but not a HUGE one.

Here are a couple of outside names that have ties to the Big Sky.

Bobby Hauck former Griz HC and UNLV HC was tied to the MSU job when Choat was hired. Currently at San Diego State as associate head coach and Special Teams.

Tim Cramsey former MSU OC and UNR OC. Recently a leading OC candidate for the Sam Houston job.

Bobby Hauck was not in consideration for the MSU job, and Hauck didn't want that job. He even came out and said he wasn't interested in the MSU job.

He was a finalist for the UM job when Stitt was hired. Sounds like the reason he didn't get the UM job back was because former President Engstrom didn't want Hauck back.

Hauck did indeed contact MSU for the position but it never went further than that. He might have just been doing his due diligence. Hauck came out later and said sarcastically "do people really think MSU would hire me?" Never publically said he wasn't interested. Quite a few rumors out there that BH is pi$$ed at UofM for passing him up for Stitt and would love to get back to the BSC as a head coach.

If this is the case, I would love to see Hauck considered. His Griz teams of a decade plus ago dominated the FCS like no other up to that point with incredible special teams, his specialty, strong physical defense, balanced offense and an intangible of intimidation that teams were beat before they even played. With the talent on this roster he might be able to even take what BB has done to the next level. I think he would be very hungry to prove he can still produce a dominate winner after his UNLV debacle and is still in the prime if his career. My only concern is he wouldn't be here long.

Choate's base at UW was $360,000. His base at MSU $180,000. Not sure if that is huge to you?

I guess that is a pretty sizeable decrease, I would sure hate to decrease my salary by 50%! I just knew that it wasn't as big of a drop as Lake would have going to EWU.

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure Hauck is the kind of player's coach that Chaves would be looking for. His resume is still pretty impressive though.

Coach Best may seem rough around the edges, but ask any other player/former player and I'm willing to bet they'd say he's the guy. Playing for him for 4 years was great. He's a natural teacher and has an amazing football mind. Plus, he's dedicated his life to EWU football and getting the job would mean 100x more to him than anyone else.

He's a great guy, but IDK if this is the right program for him to HC.

EWU's defense has suffered because neither Wulff nor Baldwin had a defensive mind. They also didn't have the wherewithal to hire a brilliant defensive coordinator. Coach Best IMO would be another Wulff or worse. Get a guy who can continue to fill the seats, beat the Griz, and hopefully get another National Championship.

Thanks Beau & good luck!

EXCELLENT POINT! He put a dominant product out there that couldn't be touched for years. Of course until Eastern ended that reign :)

He could also be the reason Montana underwent their stadium expansion.

I really like Best and have attended quite a few practices over the years. I really like the way he coaches the OL. I know he is more than just a position coach. However, the thought of an Eastern team coached by Hauck has some real appeal to me. I don’t want to sound too wrapped up about UM but it would be quite entertaining to see a Hauck team totally crush the griz, but in a different way than the Baldwin’s teams did.

Since we are throwing around former Montana coaches, what about Robin Pflugrad? It seems to me he had some good teams during his short stint there and kind of got a bum deal from them.

No I'm not kidding. He's a good coach who deserves a second chance.

That's probably a big risk based on perception alone but maybe a bringing a guy in like that as OC would be a good move. If I remember correctly he ran more of an "Oregon" type spread offense at Montana than what we're used to here.

Good article. It's not clear what actions Pflugrad took (or didn't take) to give cause to being fired at UM. One thing is for sure and that is whenever the NCAA comes snooping around they are going to find something.

"lack of institutional control" of the football program. We have already been down that road before with Paul Wulff and it's not something that I care to have to go through again as a die hard fan of this program.

I guess the point would be that people/coaches make decisions, at least on the short term, based on more than just money. In Choate's case he mentioned he has long wanted to be an FCS level head coach and wanted to be in a place like Bozeman. No reason to doubt his statement based on the fact he took a base salary cut(with potential large bonuses however) and the fact that he still has a good relationship with Peterson.

EWU may be lucky enough to find a coach that may be interested in a move down in terms of salary for varying reasons as well.

I hope EW gets better and as a Bobcat I hope MSU passes them.

Replacing BB is a tall order.

I couldn't disagree more. Coach Best knows far more about football than Wulffie and is leaps and bounds beyond him in character/composure/leadership.

I may be off here but I don't think Kramer left on the best of terms either. He left for a rival school.

Zack Hill? What is his contract at Boise State? It would be a paycut, but a chance to head coach and he knows the Offense and system.
