Recuriting Class

There's a new article on the scout site that talks about Lex Smith and he says he has an official visit scheduled for UNC.

I'll try to link it here, I'm not so good with that stuff. :D

Last Call Lexington Smith http://hscolorado.scout.com/2/936281.html

This is the UNC part anyway and who else is recruiting him:
Due to Smith’s missing time this past football season his recruitment has been very interesting as all levels from DII through DI have shown interest. Close to home, UNC and CSU Pueblo are looking at Smith. As of now, Smith has an official visit set up to UNC the final week of January. Further from home, Glendale Community College (AZ) and Arizona Western have contacted Smith. California Jucos including the College of San Mateo and College of San Francisco are also looking at Smith. In mid December, Arizona State made an in school visit to check about Smith.

No offense, but if we're competing against the likes of CSU Pueblo, Glendale Community College, etc., for recruits, than we're never going to advance as a program. We need to compete against NAU, Montana, NDSU, Idaho St, etc., for recruits. There's nothing wrong with playing at D2 and I'm sure Lex will do fine there.

I semi agree with beardown...but sometimes you can find a "diamond in the rough" I mean if you look at guys like Vincent Jackson and Reed Doughty neither were big recruits hell Vincent Jackson said that UNC was the only schools that offered him a Scholarship...So hopefully Lex comes to UNC with a chip on his shoulder in a good way and kills it on the field!

I agree with Beardown. UNC doesn't need to be going after recruits who are mostly being recruited by D2's and JuCo's. UNC needs to be competing for recruits that are being recruited by not only Big Sky Teams but programs like Wyo., CSU, Air Force, and all of the WAC teams except perhaps Boise State and at least half of the Mountain West Teams. I'm sure there are talented players out there who would like to play for UNC because they can make a real difference in this program and play earlier in their career than they might if they went to a BCS school. Plus from an educational standpoint the student/teacher ratio is smaller at UNC and the academic opportunities seem to be as good here as almost anywhere else.
All we really need is one or two game changers and we'll be at the top of the Big Sky.

Windsor running back Conner Glenn committed to the Bears over the weekend after a visit on Friday. He will play defensive back for UNC. He's an all-state player and was offered by Air Force too. From what is written in the Trib and from his own website, it looks like he's a gym-rat. The kid has a great work ethic. This is a nice get for UNC. The article says he was impressed by the coaching staff and the new facilities being built. That's going to be a big selling point to the recruits. It lets them know we're committed to getting back to winning.

Glenn also has his own website.
http://www.glennfootball.us/

Sounds like a good pick up, he seems to be a good athlete judging by his highlight video and his 4.46 speed. His website says he was offered a full-ride to Air Force, and preferred walk-on spots at CU, CSU, and Wyo.

Seems the recruiting is going much better than expected, considering our winning percentage.

I think any school that gets Connor Glen will be fortunate. A real overlooked recruit who will make a difference.

Scout is reporting that he is entertaining other offers at the moment.

Windsor (Co.) High RB Connor Glenn tells Scout.com that he has verbally committed to a Big Sky program over several D2 offers.

Glenn responds via email when asked if he committed to Northern Colorado, "Yes but it is a soft verbal right now." He is keeping his options open because he has heard from severa BCS programs

also Lex Smith still planning to visit Greeley at the end of the month, as far as I know.

Connor Glenn has good size and nice measurables (if accurate) but let's face it, he played against 3A competition. His high school team got beat pretty badly by Steamboat who was beaten badly by Valor in the 3A state championship.
The reports I've seen say that the BCS offers he's gotten have been as a preferred walk-on except for Air Force, and like was mentioned, all student's going to Air Force are on scholarship. So, this soft verbal may come back to bite him if UNC decides to pull the offer and give it to someone who has proved themselves as a quality defensive back playing against quality competition. I also wonder if UNC knows that Glenn's commitment is a soft verbal?
If it were me, I'd rather go to a school that wants me and has offered me a scholarship rather than going to a school as a preferred walk-on with no athletic scholarship and no real commitment. And, according to Scout.com, Glenn is rated as a 1 star safety with no national ranking.

Yeah if he's wishy washy on it then let's move on, screw that guy.

Wow. Tough crowd. :D
It's just a teenager getting a lot of attention for the first time and trying to make sense of it all.

The guy I'm following (and hoping he stays instate so I can watch him play), Lex Smith, is showing an offer from Montana State now, but not one from UNC although he's visiting Greeley the end of the month. Do your coaches typically wait until they meet a guy to offer, or is this unusual to have an official visit and no offer?

I hope lex and Conner and whoever we recruit realize we do have tradition at this school and we will soon be at the top again. Take a look at our games the past year and notice how many games we lost by a touchdow or fewer. There's a lot of those games where we just need that special player to come through and get us over the hump. Maybe it's Lex or Conner?

Judging by his hight light video Conner seems to be a good athlete. I played at the 2A level and have seen a lot of 3A level football here in Colorado and although it's not as talent rich as 5A or maybe 4A, there's still some hidden gems out there. Look at Montana's Chase Reynolds, he played something like 8 or 6 man football in high school, now he's one of the best RBs in the big sky. I don't know what you expect but with our record for the past few years, we're not going to be landing the top players in Colorado, hell CU can't even keep them here.

It's not unusual for an offer not to be extended until the prospect takes his official visit. I think a lot of times the coaches want to see what kind of chemistry exists between the prospect and some of the other recruits and players who are already here. I think it also means that the coaches want to spend some time with the kid to get a sense about what kind of person he is and if he really wants to be at UNC.
There's a player on the team from Lex's high school, Jace Davis, who will be a sophomore next year. They probably knew each other in high school. I think that may give UNC an edge (if they want him) over any other Big Sky program that has already offered or may offer him a scholly.

Just out of curiosity,"FasterThanYou", what's your relationship to Lex Smith? You sound like you are a relative - perhaps his father. If so, it would be great for you if he were to get an offer to play in Greeley. You'd probably get to watch him a lot more than if he decides to go to Montana State.

No relation to Lex. I used to volunteer at his high school and I followed the soccer team through their championship season. A lot of the soccer guys played rugby in the spring, so I started watching some of that. That's where I first noticed Lex. Next thing you knew I was going to football games too, for a school where I didn't even have kids attending. He stood out at the East games because he was easily the biggest guy on the field but he moved really well, and played both offense and defense. His recruitment has been a puzzle to watch because he's such a big fish in a small pond at East I guess we all thought he'd be recruited nationally, play in the All America game or something. Didn't happen that way - at least so far. He missed just enough of his senior season with an injury to fall off the recruiting radar, but if your coaches have spotted his talent, then I think he'll be an asset to the Bears.

By the way, if you knew how different I look than Lex, you'd have to laugh at the suggestion we're family, but I'll take it as a complement. I just try to keep track of what happens to some of the kids I followed in high school to see where they are going. When they play college games in Colorado, I get to some of the games. So when I say I hope he stays in state, it's just a selfish comment because Greeley is nice place to visit to watch a football game, and I'd easily make the drive. Jace Davis is also from East, but he never played football for East after he transferred, only basketball, so I only saw him in a couple playoff games.
