This is awesome news! This AD hire is already paying dividends.

If they can find a way to put the media on the east side it will be such a better viewing experience for those on watching on TV. Everytime I watch a game and the background is Dressler, the tiny tin bleachers and the parking lot, it kills me. I've always thought they should rent cranes and put the cameras on that side so the backdrop is the actual stadium.

That was talked about years ago before several play off games. The TV people want the announcers on the same side of the field as the cameras. So that will not happen until we have press box area on the East side.

Finally got a chance to visit the renovated husky Stadium yesterday for the first time since 2011 vs. UW...yes that game we had till the pass....oh wow what a treat. Amazing facility! And that press box...if you are squeamish of heights...definately not for you.
Love our facility, but looking forward to seeing what they come up with soon.

Dividends haven’t been paid YET my friend. It’s all talk until shovels dig up those ugly, tin bleachers on the eastside of the stadium. But I won’t lie to you, it definitely sounds like Hickey will get something done soon, and when the time comes, let’s make noise with our wallets fellas. #RenovateRoos #GoEags

Have you rented a 100' crane lately?

Think I have a few lying around in the garage...

Eastern will be awarding this contract on Wednesday, October 3rd and the notice to proceed with the project will be sent on October 16th. It's not a lot, but it's something. Things are happening...

"Woodward Stadium, Eastern Washington University’s current football stadium, was originally constructed in 1967 with a seating capacity of only 5000. Over the years additional seats have been placed along the east side line and south end zone boosting its capacity to approximately 8500. Our games have sold out for most if not all of the past 15 seasons and in recent years have reached near record levels of attendance. When playing games against teams that are relatively short driving distances from Cheney (Montana, Montana State and Idaho) additional bleacher seats are borrowed from the nearby rodeo grounds and placed around the stadium, boosting the capacity to over 10,000.

In 2004 a new press box and donor suite building was constructed above the west bleachers providing indoor viewing suites for coaching staff, TV and radio crews, members of the press, and over 100 major donors to the Athletics fund. All suites were purchased and filled before the facility opened and there has been a waiting list for new suites every year since.

Recognizing the need to improve the stadium and capitalize on the football program’s popularity, two studies were undertaken. The first study conducted in 2012 resulted in the proposal to construct a large facility situated between the east side line and Washington Street providing 9000 open-air seats, indoor luxury suites for over 500 fans, football operations and locker facilities, meeting rooms and event center, and retail space. At a cost of over $70,000,000 it was deemed unfeasible to pursue funding for.

A second study was undertaken in 2016 that resulted in plans to remodel the existing facility increasing the number of open-air seats to 15,000. By expanding the existing press box building and relocating the TV and press functions to above the new bleachers on the east side line, the number of interior viewing suites were expanded to accommodate 600 fans. The study was documented in a PowerPoint presentation that showed how it could be accomplished through the construction of 16 separate projects, each undertaken depending upon the level of fundraising success.

The selected consultant will be tasked with evaluating the 2016 study. The University is interested not only in developing plans that result in the current vision, but in learning of other opportunities that have not yet been considered. It is, however, important to the University that the project be designed such that it can be executed in phases depending upon the level of funding that can be raised. The PowerPoint presentation will be made available upon request.

Pre-design services are to be completed by December 21, 2018 and shall include the development of an overall architectural/functional plan, a phased construction schedule, cost estimates for each phase, and conceptual 3-D drawings and animation of each phase to be used for fund raising. Follow-on design services for any and all construction phases will be negotiated later as they will be dependent upon the success of fundraising efforts."

Eastern Washington University seeks architectural pre-design and potential follow-on A/E design services for the renovation of the football stadium located at 1200 Washington Street, Cheney, Washington 99004. The project goals include increasing the seating capacity to 15,000 open-air seats, expanding the donor suite building to accommodate up to 600 guests, providing new restrooms and concessions, and creating a perimeter security enclosure to the entire complex.
I would have liked to see the facility converted to multi-purpose facility that could accommodate football, and entertainment, which might include concerts, motorcycle racing, BMX, etc.

Well that is a new twist on things. Having the press box on the other side. I like that especially considering how many games we have on TV with a full house on the hot camera is sooo much better then the bleacher view we currently have. Pretty easy to convert all the existing spots in the current press box to suits as well. Oh yes and most importantly improvement on concessions. Let's get shovels in the ground!

I hope they consider lowering the field to the point where the track is eliminated and fill in the sides with seating. This red turf is worn out anyway and needs to be replaced by the time any renovation happens.

I think the plan is to remove the track and relocate it elsewhere in the athletic area. According to the 2016 stadium study, slide 3 shows possible locations (along with a new RED soccer field). I am with you, the track needs to go and lower the field to get seats as close to the field as possible. That's what I love about Washington-Grizzly stadium; the fans are on top of the field.

And I have noticed too that the field is looking pretty old. I believe field turf has a lifespan of 8-10 years with normal use.

I can’t view this link. Can someone post screenshots please? Thanks!

I have found that, in order to open this link https://ewueagles.sharepoint.com/:p:/r/sites/CPEWUProjects/_layouts/15/Doc.aspx?sourcedoc=%7B301bf64a-c7e4-4961-aed9-f41d4b45f37b%7D&action=default, you have to click on this link https://sites.ewu.edu/facilities/event/cp1011-football-stadium-renovation-architectural-engineering-programming-design-services-rfq/ and then click on it from there. It will not require a log-in going in that way and you should be able to view the PowerPoint.

It worked for me, anyways...

If anyone is having trouble accessing the file, I have a copy of the powerpoint. PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

I'd recommend watching it in presentation view as there is a recorded talk track and animations that don't come through when looking at the static slides. Awarding of the design firm is supposed to be today, hope we hear something soon. This could be interesting...

Worked, Thanks! But $25 MILLION??? :? :?

I don’t know if EWU will agree to $25 mill, and yea I know it’s in phases but damn dude! This is still a pipe dream (like Gateway). It’s possiblee though because (assuming they charge 40,000 instead of 30,000 for the *renovated* donor suites) there can be $9 million per year in revenue. (assuming there’s only five home games)

This is no pipe dream. This is a feasible plan that gets us a little of everything at a very realistic price. The Catalyst building in Spokane costs ~$50m. The new science building on campus costs ~$60m. I know the funding sources and buildings are different, but $25m for a total overhaul/renovation/expansion seems doable. Dr. Culinan has shown her commitment to improving our facilities. I see no reason to doubt her now.

That’s a good point. So this project will include removing the track, relocating the playing surface, replacing the red playing surface, extending the west side stands, extending the donor suites/press box with it, building a concrete grandstand on the east side <— (is that correct?) & building a small press box for press, coaches and media so we won’t have that terrible view on tv anymore!

On second thought... maybe $25m isn’t that bad after all! If EWU gets this done it will be a dream come true for Eagles fans & alum!
