Roos Field Renovation

I can’t see the sharepoint. What would the first phase entail? Please say east side grandstand.

Nope because “the track needs to move.” Even though that would require track/soccer field & east side bleacher replacement, new red turf replacement, north end zone stands move westward & then a eastside grandstand built.

Long term needs to start with moving the track. Might not be what you want today, but by far the best for this becoming a nice stadium that provides an awesome experience.

Nothing wrong with that, I just hope that whole process or the extension of the westside pressbox or grandstand is part of “phase one”.

Anyone heard anything from Oct. 3rd?

Eastern will be awarding this contract on Wednesday, October 3rd..

Certainly not my area of expertise, but it's interesting to think about how the phased approach would be accomplished. Lots of dependencies. If they move the track first, that means the east side stands go with it. It would be cool to move the field closer to the west side, but would leave nothing on the west side.

I think you meant “..leave nothing on the east side.” That’s the point I’m trying to make, they’d be FORCED to build the eastside structure DURING that phase. Isn’t that odd? It almost makes you consider leaving the track because that current plan is almost a demolition of the current stadium.. the only thing that stays is the west grandstand and the pressbox/donor suites. Don’t get me wrong, GREAT VISION for our stadium, but the soccer team gets a new stadium, track & field gets a brand new facility, Intramural sports gains a new field (with lights) & the new stadium still doesn’t get bowled in/fully enclosed on the north end.(similar to UM & MSU’s intimidating end zone sections)

It’s almost like the other sports benefit as much or more in this scenario and I’m hoping that’s the justification to get this thing built. “It doesn’t just benefit EWU Football, all EWU students can potentially benefit from this project.”

Per the "Flight Report" with Larry Weird today on GoEags.com, the contract was awarded to Spokane's own ALSC Architects. This group has had a hand in working on the Northern Quest Resort & Casino Expansion and they have already made pre-designs for a renovation of the Pine Bowl at Whitworth University. It looks like they have offices in both Spokane and the valley. This is a quick synopsis of what was discussed - or at least, what my brain picked out... The administration, along with Coach Best, and the architects have had one general meeting thus far but plan to have many more over the next two weeks. During the first meeting, they walked the architects through the football program's operations. They talked about what their "needs were and what their dreams are".

The next step is to send out invitations to certain people to be a part of focus groups where they will meet either on campus or at the architect's office in Spokane to discuss what the needs of the fans are and what they would like to see happen. After that, the team will compare and summarize the answers of each of the multiple focus groups. Then, they will compile the answers and discuss all of the answers with the focus groups to try to really prioritize what things need to be put in the stadium.

Hickey said that we need to 1) have a plan that is doable and is able to be complete 2) with consideration to phases, think about the the fund raising and cost picture 3) then everyone has to understand that under state law, this is not something that the university can build. This can only be done with sponsorships, naming rights, fundraising, etc. so we have to put together a business plan to fund these great focus group ideas. She wants to keep the red field and answer some of the current needs we have for the student athletes - training rooms, nutrition, etc. so that we have a great handful of resources to back each team.

The plan is to build onto the current football stadium's location - renovate rather than rebuild. All other sites, such as the baseball field and practice fields, were deemed less desirable. The idea is to grow the current footprint. A major question is whether or not to move the track, but they are waiting to hear from the expert advice from the architects and hear what the constituents want. They also want to be sure that this doesn't crash and burn. She only wants to put the effort into something that they can be very successful with.

This phase of talking begins now and will end within the next two weeks. Then, the pre-design will be completed by the end of December or the end of January at the latest. The business plan for fundraising will be sent out at that point - naming rights, fundraising, and whatnot as well. Everyone will know by the end of January what the plan and dream is.

This is a "two to three year" out project. In the meantime, she says that she needs folks to contribute to the EAF. As soon as the design is complete, there will be a huge opportunity to donate to the project but until then, we cannot withhold normal donations to keep the program afloat.

That's what I picked out and interpretted from the podcast, but I would suggest y'all give it a listen as well.

I'm sure the rinky dink low rise stands on the east side and the newer endzone seating could easily be saved and moved back into place (and closer to the field) if the track were removed... They are by no means permanent structures.

They could, but those aluminum bleachers (which seat ~3k) are also already being promised to the Soccer field during this expansion... according to the proposed project in the powerpoint presentation... not that that is set in stone whatsoever. Everything is still up in the air.

Well folks, I am finally done with this project. It was fun coming up with ideas on how to improve the football stadium, while getting to learn how to do 3d renderings at the same time. Fun, but time consuming, so I had to work on it during the weekends or when I had spare time, which isn't often. So it took forever. When I get a chance, I'll upload it to 3d warehouse, and it can be downloaded from there. The idea is that you can put these models into google earth, although since this one is only theoretical, I won't be doing that. Plus, there is already a model of the Inferno in google earth - although not as detailed as mine!

I built just about everything from scratch, to include the terrain, in google sketchup, with the exception of the lights and a few other small things. The field I made in Photoshop and imported into Sketchup as a jpeg. Not everything is 100% to scale probably, but it's pretty close. As I said before, the terrain I had to make, because believe it or not, the google earth terrain was far from accurate and the angles were way off. I am sketchup'd out for a while, but I'll probably do another one of these at some point. Maybe WA-Griz or something.

Current lower parking lot would have to be reworked a little.

With the new east stand, there would have to be another entrance into the stadium.

And lastly some bonus shots that I put through an actual 3d engine (look kinda weird to me):

Anyone want to donate 2-3 million to make this happen? :thumb: It'd be nice to get our facilities significantly improved by say, 2015.

Bump. I still like my original idea. :thumb:

I hope you are wrong on the track. IMO there is more home field advantage if the fans are "sitting on top" of the players. Washington Griz stadium is kind of like that. Reminds me of the first time I want to a NASCAR race at Bristol Motor speedway, my knees were same height as the guys head in front of me. Seating must be 45 deg. but everyone is really close to the cars as they go by, FUN FUN.

Plus keeping the track but building up the rest of the stadium makes it less useful for track as you can't see where people are running on the backsides and corners.
