SLO this week

Well, certainly not what I had hoped to see two games into the season but maybe not too far from what I expected to see with the loss of key personnel. Weber kinda lucky to get out of SLO with the W. I expected some struggles with the offense but hoped for better than what we've seen so far. I'm getting a little worried for the defense; they're doing OK but far from the team that was very sound last year. Unless they make strides this week, it could be an ugly home opener vs SD.
Took the words right out of my mouth. The O line was a bit more sound in the second half, but has a long ways to go to be where we were last year. Same goes for the D. Special teams are still good. I'm still with them and hoping that they get better each and every week. :coffee:

Is it the line or is it the OC? Schramm's playbook isn't easy. I figured it might take our players, line especially, some time to figure things out. Don't get me wrong here. I'm glad we have our OC, just saying it'll take some time. Each week we will improve though.

If you’re wondering about the first Weber TD your guys marched down the field and scored easily. I was having visions of NDSU. Regarding video quality out of SLO that has been a source of embarrassment for a very long time.

My takes on the game. I was wondering why Weber didn’t try to run the ball more as big as you are up front. I was happy pretty much every time your QB dropped back to pass. Cal Poly wasn’t putting much pressure and Weber will need much better quarterback play to be in contention in the BSC this year. I thought defensively your front seven may be as good as any that CP faces this year. You’re extremely stout up the middle. However, I can’t imagine your secondary doing that well against some of the good passing teams in the conference.

From our perspective it will be nice to face someone not named NDSU or Weber. I’m hoping our offense can get our run game going next Friday against Brown. Like NDSU Brown will have ample time to prepare for the triple option. I was satisfied with my son’s play individually. He told me after the game he felt that your #50 is quite a bit better than #91. Good luck the rest of the way Wildcat fans and congratulations on the win.

Your WR #6 and your scat back #1 gave us fits all night long. You're right, our secondary did not look good. The highlights for us were the first drive and the long run in the second half. Our O line did play better in the second half. However, CP made it easier on us by only rushing 3 on some key passing plays. Whenever CP rushed more than 3 our QB play was not as good.

Your D is young and has some talent. With that said, I think CP will win some games this year and should be on the upswing over the next few years. You are the only program that plays that style in the BSC and that makes it harder for teams to prepare. :coffee:

With what is being said about the Weber secondary if I were you I wouldn’t fret too much. I say this because Cal Poly seems to constantly have receivers open due to our run heavy offense, we don’t always have quarterbacks with the accuracy to complete those passes.

Before we put this subject to bed, I really feel we need to recognize Josh Davis' efforts Saturday night. He was awesome! He played a great game and was the offense Weber needed. 177 yards in his first start. What a night by the freshman running back. Personally, I felt that Constantine and Jenks did enough while each were on the field. Both made some nice plays and did some good things. I understand why the coaches have had such a hard time.

Agreed on Davis. Should get consideration for conference POW. Jenks, by the way, left the game under concussion protocol. But heard it was determined not to be a concussion. I think Constantine looked more comfortable and if it were me he'd be the starter going forward.

My .02

Offense - B-
Feels like we have two QBs with some very different skills and both need reps to iron out some deficiencies. Feels like the old adage about having two QBs means you have no QB. I like Jenks running ability, but he seems a little raw in the passing game. Maybe not his fault, receivers have dropped a few and the play calling has been pretty conservative. That said, Constantine looked more experienced pre-play and had a better feel for the passing game, but he seemed hesitant under pressure and less mobile. Josh Davis was pretty good, I think we will be fine at running back. The offensive line needs polish. Probably the result of the OC change in the off season. Play calling is still too vanilla for me, but it was a better game.

Defense - B
Front 7 are pretty solid. Triple option is hard to evaluate since we almost never see it. But I thought for the most part we held the run game in check up the middle and only had a few lapses on the outside edge. Pass coverage is a little concerning. We let a few guys run behind us. Luckily they dropped a few balls. Again the triple option makes pass coverage a little tricky as well. This week should give us a chance to see what we have in the secondary.

Special Teams - B
Shaheed was one defender away from a TD return. Punts were solid, 41.6 avg with no return yards. Tuttle made one FG and missed an attempt at a career long FG.

Pluto TV Cal Poly edition - F
Quality of feed was horrible. Bad camera angles. Bad commentary. Bad production. Several missed plays due to someone being asleep at the switch.

One other note. Weber seems pretty disciplined thus far. Only 5 penalties this game for 43 yards. Against Utah we had 5 for 42 yards.

We saw the same thing @Utah. Granted, they are much stronger competition and are a different look offensively but I thought the secondary showed the same worrisome looks.

Agreed. And the root cause may be the same for both games. I think we get caught ball watching and trying to provide run support. This will need to improve or we will get beat deep several times a game.

Josh Davis was named STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week for the Cal Poly game.

Well deserved he was likely the difference last Saturday night.
