The List Is Out!

ok, i'm still gathering my thoughts. i'm glad we have a short list of coaches. i don't have a 'favorite'.
o'boyle might fit he bill..... chadron st has a good following of home fans, he must know how to get the locals to support the program. they fill they're seats for home games. has had some success there. ptrice would probablly be right..........

Northern Colorado: We hear Northern Colorado has talked with Mike Breske (Montana – defensive coordinator), Bob Stitt (Colorado School of Mines – head coach), John Wristen (Colorado State Pueblo – head coach), Earnest Collins Jr (Alcorn State – head coach), and Bill O’Boyle (Chadron State – head coach). Our source tells us more formal interviews will take place with these candidates

I like the list--there are no waterboys making $130k from major Division I programs! Please no Breske though!

Stitt is a drama queen and runs the spread... that's why not Stitt. The Chadron guy has the biggest upside in my opinion, Ernest Collins (who I mentioned a couple weeks ago) is on paper the best choice.

I'd say first reaction is either O'Boyle or Collins.

I don't believe Earnest Collins is going to be available.

Alcorn State News:
Head football coach Earnest E. Collins, Jr. agreed on a new three-year contract that runs through the 2012 season. “We are delighted that Coach Collins will continue to lead the Alcorn State University Braves football program. He and the entire football staff share the University’s vision for excellence and they care about the welfare of our student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom,” said Mrs. Brenda T. Square, interim director of athletics.

I also read somewhere that Wristen from CSU-P is not interested in the UNC job and didn't even interview. Anybody know something different?

Yeah we might be screwed on this one, now that I think about it hasn't O'Boyle only won with Woodhead and done fuck all without him?

So of this 5 that leaves... Breske...

OK, I'll edit this, I just went and read the talk about Breske on egriz and they speak well of him so maybe this could be a winner, he is a hard ass by all reports which in my opinion we need. So now I'm thinking this could be an option...

Oh and so funny those d-bags take the opportunity to run us down, the joke being nobody has heard of us, like anyone in FBS has any idea who MU is besides the WAC, pretty ironic considering they are in a conference with us and chose to stay in this conference because they don't have the onions to back up all their talk and move up to FBS.... typical small fish mentality, they are so great yet everyone they beat sucks, but wouldn't logic dictate that if you are only beating teams that suck than you aren't aren't so great yourself? But those inbreds will never get it.

I think Jay may have to post the job opening again and see who else might be interested. I can't believe that this is the best there is out of 45 applications.

I'm not really sure who you thought you'd see on a finalist list? This is Northern Colorado. CSU didn't have any big names when they searched a few years ago, CU didn't have any great names when they searched. UNC can pay about $100K. For the right person, this is a stepping stone job.

I'd be interested in hearing what Wisten thinks he could do here. I've heard that Stitt did not impress when he interviewed 5 years ago - his mentality was that he's a Glenn disciple and was somehow owed the job. Talking crap about how UNC won't meet his needs for cash isn't going to help him.

I would be really disappointed if it was Stitt. He has made the D2 playoffs 2x and folks D2 aint what it is when we were there. Breske is the total opposite from Downing in his demeanor. He did a great job when he was here and a big reason why we won titles.

As far as footballscoop.com, I'm not sure how accurate they are. They said Downing was going to be gone last year. Maybe we should wait until the Tribune comes out with the short list.

This list is very accurate and these are the 5 being contacted. However, there are some on the list who are turning down the interview. Earnest Collins come to mind because he just signed a 3 year extension at Alcorn State. They are 5 decent coaches, but were not the best coaches that applied for the job as there were far better qualified that were not even looked at because they did not have any Colorado ties

How do you know this?

O'Boyle has coached for years at a program with very little funding and less facilities than a lot of Wyoming High Schools. He has had to split scholarships in every way possible to field a squad of about 100 working with less than 25 scholarships.

Yes, O'Boyle was blessed with Danny Woodhead for four years, but he did not fail to recognize for a second who the best player was on that team when Woodhead was a freshman, he started immediately.

O'Boyle also favors the spread offense and the dink, dink passing game with lots of bubble screens, and no true tight end, that is what he favors.

During Woodhead's tenure he formed the offense around him and the results were immediate.

He also has a core of assistants that have been on his and Brad Smith's staffs for a long time. Chadron is known for a very strong defense.

Maybe not Urban Meyer guys, but I know he is a viable candidate. I wish him well.

fedup..."there were far better qualified that were not even looked at because they did not have any Colorado ties"

What's so all damn important about Colorado ties for a head coach? Will a head coach from somewhere else not be able to recruit in Colorado? A lot of the talent is from other states anyway. If you look at the roster of Chadron State for example, they have kids from all over including as far away as Alaska, Alabama and Puerto Rico. Most of the better programs recruit kids from outside their home state.
If the argument is that a coach must have Colorado ties to generate enthusiasm and money from local boosters and alumni, I would argue that a winning program will generate enthusiasm and money.

Requiring that the head coach have Colorado ties is a bull shit requirement. Hire the best guy regardless!!!

I agree with #1bearsfan. Any competent coach can recruit their state extremely well, and if any one is interested in looking at rosters; Northern colorado is second in the Big Sky with 68% of players on roster from their state behind Sacremento State who is at 100%. Winning is the issue because the few kids in Colorado who can play in the Big Sky are turning down scholarship offers from us to play for teams that are winning, like Montana, Weber State, and Eastern Washington. Every Colorado kid on their roster was offered by UNC

Downing couldn't. I just think its good idea to get somebody that knows Colorado, knows where the talent is and has connections. Bringing in Downing, a guy who probably didn't know where Colorado was until he came here, wasn't a good idea. Downing's staff thought they had to go to California, Arizona and so forth, for talent. If you take a look at Downing's last two recruiting classes a majority of them were out of state kids. Which probably meant they would be burning up more scholarship money for the out of state kids. Correct me if I'm wrong but out of state kids are going to be charged out of state tuition, meaning more money to fork over to them. If I was an outta state kid who was getting recruited to play at UNC, I'd straight up tell them they needed to pay for everything or I'm not coming.

You say that every Colorado kid on the roster has been offered by UNC, which I don't think is true, but how many were offered a "full ride"? If I was a Colorado kid, and UNC was looking at me, but wasn't going to give me a full ride, what makes you think I would want to go there? I realize winning plays a big part in kids coming to your football program, but at the same time I think if you pursue a kid hard enough he would come as well. I'm not sure how all that stuff works, but that's just my take on it.

Recruiting Colorado for any head coach coming to UNC should be relatively easy. You find out who the best high school football programs are in the state and you go recruit there (and the best ones are not in Greeley, they're in Denver Metro except for most of the Denver Prep League or whatever they're calling it these days). Any of us on this board could name the best hs football programs in Colorado and if we can do it it's not rocket science for a head coach to find out. When you've gotten the best you can out of CO, then you go out of state to get the talent that's going to win conference championships for you.
