The List Is Out!

Nice article about Chadron's Bill O'Boyle. I would be okay with this guy. Hell, I'll be excited about any of them as long as it's not Bob Stitt. We should have a coach by Friday at the latest.

I think I'm sold on him. First of all, a guy with that impressive of a mustache isn't gonna put up with any half-assed effort from his players! On top of that, he has won, or nearly won, the RMAC every year so he is used to winning. I was thinking that he hadn't really done much without Danny Woodhead but that's not the case and additionally, he's got to get some credit for finding Woodhead and getting him to play there. Also, he seems like he will be similar to Tad Boyle in that he won't be making excuses after losses. I say hire him now!

good atricle, i've thought from the day the list was out that he may have the best chance. the most affordable guy on the list? rmac is not the big sky, and, this would be a work in progress, my question is what side of the ball is he hoping to bring "his" guys in on?

O'Boyle does have a staff assembled. He sounds like he has a dynamic personality. Is that true? I don't think Breske is much of a dynamo, but I really don't know him that well. All I know is that he's a hard ass. Hard to say if he has a staff assembled, if not O'Boyle has him there.

I'd say O'Boyle and Stitt are the top choices, Collins being a close third, and then Breske. The only reason why I have Breske last is because the guy has never been the head guy. I think if we want to right the ship, and do it some what quick, we need someone that has been the head guy. I know a lot of you don't like Stitt because he runs the spread. I don't like the spread either, but I think Stitt at least knows how to run it. Darnell ran the spread your ass cheeks and take it up the ass, spread.

Yeah I'm starting to think O'Boyle could be the sleeper, it's not the flashy pick which is what I like. I wish I knew more, how have they done post Woodhead? I checked their roster they do have about a dozen Colorado kids and being in the RMAC obviously he knows the region and coming from small town Chadron Greeley would actually be big time.

My guess is it boils down to who Breske has lined up as assistants. If he just rolled in with only a couple pieces of the staff, then he's probably back in the pack. If he has that settled, then he's probably near the top. If he has some big names, which is a good possibility, then he's going to be hard to turn away. He may have D-Line coach Inoke Breckterfield as a possible defensive coordinator for Breske. Breske has quite a few contacts from his Wyoming days, too.

I'd like to know what your definition of "big name" assistant coaches are. If it's anyone that worked for Joe Glenn, worked at Montana or Wyoming - then that's very short sighted. Pardon me but there is way too much short sighted thinking going on in this process.

If we're going for passion for the game and love for UNC, then Earnest Collins will be the man. I know his record at Alcorn isn't impressive but he's been there two years and he's improved their record both years. Plus, we don't know what's going on over there. The program could have been in shambles before he got there. I hope you guys aren't forgetting Beck and his friends DO have influence over who might be picked. Jay knows he can't bight the hand that feeds him.

You make a really good point here that I haven't totally thought through and that's the political side of things, considering that I'd have to think it's a Breske/Collins race...

Hell at this point I'll be cool with any of the four I'm just looking forward to getting someone in and moving forward.

That's pretty funny. Beck and his friends do have some influence but there's no hands that feed anything. Beck and his crew of experts don't give crap and never really did. They just bitch about anything that's different than the good old days of DII.

If Beck had as much sway as he thought he did, or wanted, there's no way that O'Boyle would be interviewing today. He tried to make playing or coaching at UNC a requirement for consideration.

I think all 4 (even 5, too bad Wristen dropped out), are solid candidates. All of them are miles ahead of Downing. Just need to hire somebody, so we can get to some recruiting.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Beck and his "crew" are huge UNC fans and supporters and do give a "crap." They at least try to keep people involved and coming to the games which is hard to do when you have an incompetent head coach and AD.

Personally I do not think that playing or coaching at UNC should be a requirement but it should go into the equation - just like it does at every college in the country.

I agree all are an upgrade. My preference would be: 1 - Stitt / 2 - Breske / 3 - Collins / 4 - O'Boyle

Of course Hinrichs is running the show so the waterboy from LSU will probably em in his resume at the 11th hour and Jay will hire him. :D

I agree any of the 4 would be an upgrade. While Beck and company want to have the final say, like any comittee hiring, Jay and president Norton make the final decision. Past ties do not mean anything and if you know how to win, then you are a winner. I think O'boyle should be the #1 choice followed by Breske, Collins, and then Stitt.

My concern about hiring D2 coaches is that they haven't recruited D1 players. And it's going to take D1 talent to be one of the top teams in the Big Sky. UNC is close to being one of these teams but there's a lot to be gained in terms of getting over the hump by having a coach who's been with a winning program at the FCS level. The last thing UNC needs is another coach learning on the fly. IMO, there are a lot of very talented coaches in this conference and the new head coach at UNC needs to be equal to the McBrides, Ashs, and Baldwins.

Hey uncfootballrules: Read what I actually wrote. Beck doesn't give crap ($$$), not give "a crap". He does care a lot about the unc football but doesn't pony up cash.

there's no way any decision has been made before Collins interviews. . . that's the classic folly of taking two unconnected things and connecting them and drawing a conclusion.
