This Day in ISU Women's Basketball...

February 19, 1977Charly Bond would set the program record when she grabbed 26 rebounds in an 85-83 win over Southern Utah in Pocatello. Bond would finish her great Bengal career with 824 rebounds to go along with 1,259 points. In her career she also had games with 23 and 22 boards.

February 20, 2014 – It was Lindsey Reed’s greatest scoring night. Reed dropped in a career high 34 points as ISU beat Montana State 75-65 at Reed Gym. Reed went 7 of 16 from the floor, 3 of 8 from three point range and sunk 17 of 18 free throws. She actually made her first 17 straight in the game before missing her last free throw attempt of the night. She also had seven rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals. She was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for her performance. Lindsey would end her career with 1,492 points; 4th most in program history and 691 rebounds.

February 21, 2015 – Although Jasmine Lemon was one of the smallest players to play at ISU she had a big heart and could deliver a big game when needed. With ISU fighting for wins to make the post season tournament, Lemon came up really big. She scored 27 points in the 87-74 overtime win over Montana State at Reed Gym. Lemon sent the game to overtime with a twisting shot from the baseline that went in with two seconds left in regulation. Then her teammates outscored MSU 18-5 to secure it. In addition to the 27 points, Lemon had six rebounds, three assists and played over 40 minutes. She shot 9 of 17 from the field, 2 of 6 from three point range and 7 of 8 at the free throw line.

February 22, 2007 – As the regular season was winding down, ISU’s Andrea Lightfoot just kept going. Lightfoot shot in 29 points as the Bengals beat Eastern Washington 83-80 in a tight game at Reed Gym. Lightfoot went 9 for 17 from the field, 5 of 10 from three point range and 6 for 6 from the line. She also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

February 23, 2002 Ashley Toner, who would have 1,342 points and 602 rebounds in her ISU career, set the school record when she made 15 field goals in a game. She finished the game with 36 points on 15 of 26 shooting. It would take place in an 84-65 win over Portland State at Reed Gym. Toner would be named first team all-Big Sky Conference for the 2000-20001 season and also make the all-conference postseason team in 2001. She would team up with Mandi Carver to give the Bengals the best front line in the conference. Three times in her career Toner would be named the Big Sky Player of the Week.

February 24, 2007 – It was a stunning win over Portland State 91-90 at Reed Gym. The Vikings hit a layup with 1.5 seconds remaining to lead 90-88. But ISU inbounded from Natalie Doma to Michelle Grohs to Andrea Lightfoot who buried a three as time expired for the win. Lightfoot finished with 24 points and went over the 1,000 point career mark that afternoon.

February 25, 2012 – The Bengals beat Eastern Washington at Reese Court 63-50 to clinch the Big Sky regular season championship. It was Ash Vella who made sure the team was not going to lose the chance to clinch the title. After a first half that saw her go scoreless she exploded for 21 second half points including 11 straight in one stretch to drag the team across the finish line. Vella also had six rebounds, five assists, a block and two steals in the game.

February 26, 2009 – It was another dominating performance from ISU’s Oana Iacovita. Oana pumped in 30 points in the Bengals 70-64 win in Sacramento. She was one of four ISU players in double figures that night. 22 of her 30 points came in the first half. She also had nine rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.

February 27, 2014 – In Flagstaff the Bengals took out the Lumberjacks 72-65 to give the program their 500th victory. Lindsey Reed and Rebecca Schrimpsher both scored 23 points in the game.

February 28, 2009 – It was the Jenna Brown show in a nail biting win in Flagstaff over No. Arizona. Brown drove into the lane and hit a layup with :26 seconds left to put the Bengals ahead 61-60 then with one second to go sank a free throw to increase the lead to a pair. She deliberately missed the second attempt to let the clock run out and ISU won the game 62-60. Jenna scored 21 points that day to lead Idaho State and added three rebounds, six assists and two steals in playing all 40 minutes.

March 1, 1997 – With a 70-49 win over Cal State-Northridge, ISU ended the regular Big Sky season with 11 wins. The previous season they won all of two conference games. The nine game improvement was one of the best turnarounds in the history of the conference and it was quite an accomplishment by the team and head coach Ardie McInelly.

March 2, 2013 – On Senior Day, the Bengals routed Sacramento State 81-61. Four players scored in double figures for ISU but the star of the show was Ash Vella. Vella narrowly missed a triple-double as she had one of the best games in her career. For the afternoon Ash scored 17 points, had 12 rebounds, eight assists, a block and a steal in 36 minutes of action.

March 4, 1984 – In her four seasons at ISU, Nancy Espeseth never had a winning season but after she closed out her career in a loss at Montana, she walked away with a resume that was among the best in program history. Espeseth scored 1,050 points in her career and also is the school record holder in assists for a career with 405.

March 5, 1994 – The 1994 season wasn’t a great one for the Bengals as they went 7-19 but they did have one thing going for them. Meg Salness was solid in her first year and would go on to win the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year award as voted on by the coaches. It was the first time an ISU player ever won that honor. Salness came from an athlete family. Her father started at safety for USC, was a teammate of O.J. Simpson and started in the Rose Bowl. Meg would spend five years as a Bengal missing one season with an injury. She also hit the first basket in the first ISU Alumni Game started by head coach Seton Sobolewski, a jumper from the corner.

March 6, 1993 – She only played two seasons for the Bengals but Jennifer Cannon left quite a legacy. Cannon’s ISU career ended with a close loss at Idaho 57-52 but as she walked out the door she left as the all-time school leader in assists per game with 4.6 a contest. She was also a first team All-Big Sky performer that year, the Big Sky Conference’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner and a two time Big Sky Conference Player of the Week. She did all this while being married and commuting to Pocatello every day from Shelley. Her son played at Weber State.

March 7, 2006 – Defense wins championships. Anytime you have players willing to dig in and do the little things needed to win games is a blessing. ISU was blessed for the season by having Joanna Hixon on their team. Hixon was named the co-Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year in a vote by the coaches along with Eastern Washington’s Joanna Chadd. Hixon was one of the Big Sky's top rebounders, ranking third at 8.2 a game. She also ranked second in the league in defensive rebounds with 4.7 a game, and had posted eight games of 10 or more boards.

March 8, 2000 – Dahlberg Arena in Missoula was the site for a historic night for ISU basketball. The Bengals took down Eastern Washington 55-46 in the Big Sky post season tournament marking the first ever post season win for the program. Angela Munger and Mandi Carver each had 13 points. Sarah Nelson added 12. Carver also had 18 rebounds and played all 40 minutes.

March 9, 2016 – It was the shot heard around the west. Idaho State upset top seeded Montana State 52-50 to advance to the semifinals of the Big Sky post season tournament in Reno, Nevada. The game winner came from guard Juliet Jones who raced up the court after Anna Lee Policicchio rebounded a missed free throw and knocked down a pull up three ball for the win. The shot was from NBA three point range. ESPN’s SportsCenter would later lead their sportscast with that shot. Policicchio would have 17 rebounds in the game helping the Bengals cause.

March 10, 2001 – Before the largest crowd overall in Idaho State women’s basketball history, ISU beat Montana 68-59 to win the Big Sky Conference postseason tournament and punch their ticket to the NCAA’s for the first time. Four Bengal players scored in double figures led by Mandi Carver with 16. It also was the programs 300th win and capped off an undefeated conference season as the Bengals went 18-0 counting the two games in the postseason tournament.
