This Day in ISU Women's Basketball...

November 17, 2011 – Sometimes a player just gets in a zone or has a night where they just can’t miss. For ISU’s Jessa Jeppesen it came on this night against in-state rival Boise State. Jeppesen, playing in only her third game as a Bengal, dropped in 29 points in ISU’s 84-75 win over the Broncos. Jessa basically couldn’t miss, scoring on 10 of 12 shots. She was also 9 for 11 from the free throw line, had 10 rebounds and added a steal in 31 minutes of action.

November 20, 2012 – In a 64-55 win over Boise State at the Taco Bell Arena, ISU’s Ash Vella scored the 1,000th point in her career. It came in the second half. For the night she’d have 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Vella would finish her time in Pocatello scoring 1,341 points with 750 rebounds and a Big Sky regular season and post season title.

November 22, 1983 – The Bengals blow out Utah State 93-58 for the first win under new head coach Mark French. Unfortunately things never got going under him and he left after four years and a record of 32-71. He’d later go on to lead Cal Santa Barbara for 21 years and win 438 games there along with making numerous NCAA appearances.

November 23, 2010 – She was from Texas and having the chance to play in her home state in front of her family brought out the best in Chelsea Pickering. Pickering was red hot; scoring 31 points in ISU’s 69-52 win at Texas State. She was 10 of 22 from the floor, 6 of 10 from three point range and chipped in 5 of 7 from the free throw line. Toss in three rebounds, four assists and five steals and it was an overpowering performance.

November 25, 2016 – The impressive start as a Bengal for Estefania Ors continued South of the Border at the Cancun Classic in Mexico as she was named to the all-tournament team in the Riviera Division. In the two games she scored 29 points, had 11 rebounds and added three assists. ISU would go 1-1 in the tournament.

November 28, 2007 – In ISU’s close win 69-60 over Utah State at Reed Gym, Natalie Doma had 26 points and 16 rebounds. She was 10 of 19 from the floor and played all 40 minutes.

November 29, 2003 – Freshman Molly Hays, playing in only her fourth college game had a terrific shooting night in ISU’s 95-52 win over Lehigh in the Coors Classic in Boulder, Colorado. Hays scored 24 points on 9 of 11 shooting. She was 2 for 2 from three point range and 2 of 2 from the line. She also had nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block in 34 minutes.

December 1, 1995 – It turned out to be a career game for the Bengals Stacy Nelson. In the championship game of the Gate City Shootout, Nelson dropped in 32 points as ISU beat So. Utah 78-70. Making the performance even more impressive was that Nelson fired in eight, three-point shots!

December 2, 2003 – In a game at Southern Utah, ISU’s Christa Brossman scored 31 points as the Bengals beat the Thunderbirds 98-65. Brossman had 25 points at halftime. Southern Utah as a team had 27! Christa shot 12 for 23 on the night, 7 of 12 from three point range and had seven assists. After leaving ISU she’d become an assistant coach at Idaho under former ISU head coach Jon Newlee.

December 4, 1990 – At Southern Utah, Stephanie Pemper of ISU set the school record when she was perfect from three point range in the Bengals 84-56 win over the Thunderbirds. Pemper went 7 for 7 in the game. In her career she’d shoot made three pointers at a 42.6 per cent clip, the best in ISU history. To qualify for that record a player had to attempt at least 80 three point shots. ISU shot 9 for 9 from three point range as a team in the game which is also the school record.

December 5, 2009 – At the Arizona State tournament ISU was playing Utah State and saw a 14 point second half lead disappear and it looked like they could lose the game but Ash Vella decided they wouldn’t. Vella twice got the rebound off a missed shot from Morgan Wohltman and laid it up and in with a second left to break a 53 all tie. She also was fouled on the play, converted the free throw and sealed the win 56-53. She had eight points and 11 rebounds along with two assists and four steals in the game.

December 6, 2016 – It was a historic night for ISU in Madison, Wisconsin. The Bengals beat the Badgers out of the Big 10 Conference 42-35 to get one of the biggest wins in program history. Grace Kenyon was the only Bengal to score in double figures with 10 points but the ISU defense was exceptional. In three of the four quarters they held Wisconsin to single digits in the scoring column. The 35 points allowed was the fewest in the history of the program to a school considered to be in a power or upper echelon conference.

December 8, 1979 – In a game played in Boise in a non-tournament situation, against Washington State, ISU’s Kelly Chapple set the school record with eight steals against the Cougars. ISU would win the game 60-58 in two overtimes. That record remains to this day. In the early years of the program, ISU would play some regular season games in Boise.

December 10, 2011 – In a heart stopping game at Reed Gym, ISU got a layup in the final seconds to beat Utah State 67-65. It was Kaela Oakes who got into the lane and hit the shot with nine seconds to go to give ISU the lead. Then on the final possession, Oakes forced the Aggies Ashlee Brown outside and used up time so that Brown had to take a rushed layup attempt at the buzzer which was no good. Oakes had 15 points and five assists along with four rebounds and a steal in the game.

December 11, 2010 – Anytime you can get a win on the road against a team from a bigger conference it’s a reason to celebrate. ISU was celebrating after beating Utah State 64-52 at the Spectrum. ISU ran their motion offense so well that the Aggies came out of their usual zone defense in an effort to stop them…it didn’t work. Chelsea Pickering had 29 points on 11 of 20 shooting. She was 2 for 4 from three point range and 5 of 6 from the line. She also added six rebounds, three assists, a block and four steals for the afternoon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ISU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL!

December 21, 1974 Idaho State women’s basketball played their first ever game. They beat Ft. Lewis College 55-42. In the game ISU’s Rhonda Bulcher pulled down 21 rebounds, still one if the highest single game totals in program history. The Bengals took 93 shots in that game. Karen Tharp had 15 points, Laura Hanson added 11. ISU forced 31 turnovers while turning it over 34 times themselves! The team had co-head coaches the first season in Sandra Noakes and Kevin Gilbride. Yes, that’s the same Kevin Gilbride who’d go on to coach in the NFL for a number of years and win two Super Bowls as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants. The Bengals finished their first season with a record of 8-7.
 
December 22, 1993 – At a holiday Christmas tournament ISU edged Western New Mexico 64-63. In the same tournament the day before, ISU lost to Abilene Christian 75-74 meaning it was only the second time in school history the Bengals played consecutive games decided by one point.

December 29, 2003 – In a game at UC-Irvine, ISU erased an eight point second half deficit to beat the Anteaters 75-66. It was Christa Brossman leading the way with 26 points but she scored 21 of them in the second half including three made three point shots in the final 10 minutes of the game. She was 10 of 17 for the night, 5 of 8 from beyond the arc in 35 minutes.

January 1, 1984 – ISU set the school record for the most free throws attempted in a game and the most free throws made in a game as they blasted Southern Oregon 99-58 on New Year’s Day. The Bengals attempted 49 free throws and made 35 of them in the win. The 83-84 club would boast three players who would end their careers with over 1,000 points in Shelley Hand, Lynn Henderson and Nancy Espeseth.

January 2, 2010 – It was the one-two punch for the Bengals as Oana Iacovita and Chelsea Pickering almost by themselves took down Montana State in overtime at Worthington Arena 77-73. Iacovita had her best scoring night as a Bengal dropping in 31 points while Pickering added 24. Oana’s performance included going 13 of 20 from the floor, 1 for 1 from three point range and 4 of 7 from the free throw line. She also had five rebounds and two assists in a game watched by former Bengal great Mandi Carver.
