VA out 3 to 6 weeks with broken foot

LDopaPDX said:
The problem with foot injuries is that they are seldom injuries of inflammation. You can't just bang up the standard-issue cortisone and Toradol, because the pain is caused by the separation of the bone and that can't really be alleviated. However, my understanding is that recovery depends on how far the break separated. If the bone is packed together tightly, it may only take a couple of weeks to mend.

Not sure which is worse, this one or the "Jones fracture". Pun not intended, that's actually what it's called. I remember people (myself included) hoping TJ would be back for the championship game, and as we saw...he wasn't even close after over a month. Not sure how different those injuries are, but maybe that gives people a rough time frame.

The more I think about it, JW doesn't need to be VA, but he is going to need to be able to make some of those difficult throws that our offense requires...and he is going to need to be able to manage the game, without turning the ball over. We simply cannot turn the ball over, which is why I hope that Forte is close to coming back. We'll need all of our backs healthy going into the second half of the season with no VA because they quite possible may need to carry a large part of the load. Time to see what our O Line can really do.

I went to a couple of practices this Summer and it looks like Jordan West is a little more Bo Levi-esque than Vernon Adams-esque. He throws the ball around pretty well, and can get it vertical when he needs to. However, he's not nearly as mobile and doesn't have that creative instinct that Vernon has.

I suspect he'll be forced to deal with a lot of odd-man rushes to test his ability to get the ball out. Our receivers are great, and you know they can alleviate some of his first-game jitters by finding seams and making big catches. I expect our first couple of drives against SUU to look a lot like the first couple of drives va ISU, a lot of passes to the flat and plays to get the receiver into space.

Honestly, I haven't seen SUU play a single time this season, so I have no idea of their strengths and weaknesses on D.

totally agree with this post.

West is more of a pocket passer, although he isn't a statue back there. He has a good arm and will be able to throw the ball down field. He will probably see a lot of blitzing early on, but that also means single coverage on our receivers. He will need to make reads and won't be able to improvise as much as VA.

I think he is going to doing a good job. Teams will make us beat them through the air with our new QB and that is our strength. No doubt we will look to run more, but teams are probably going to load the box and make us throw it and make our QB prove it. Would be strange to see teams gear up to try and stop our run and make us beat them through the air?!?

Looking at our schedule, we need to survive Saturday, if we can do that we will be fine. SUU isn't good so we should win but a lot of question marks going in. We then get a bad UNC team at home where we could start anyone at QB and we would beat them. The biggest game is probably at NAU as they seem to be decent, although they lost to a bad team on Saturday. We have a really good chance at going 4-0 the next 4 weeks and then the Griz come to town.

One week at a time, but if we beat SUU this weekend, and I think we do, I don't know if we struggle much down the stretch, even with a backup qb.

Jordan IS an Eagle QB, right? I see no reason he won't advance the legacy. We will get Vern back. And Quincy. And Evan. And Jordan. And Cory. And everyone else down the stretch. We will be stronger and deeper as we make our way back to Frisco.

I don't believe that anyone can overcome an injury like that in only 6 weeks, so it seems likely that they are using the 3-6 weeks timetable so as to not just come out and say he's done for the season. FWIW. I think we may lose a couple of games down the stretch but I still think we make the playoffs with the amount of talent that's on the team. The team will get behind Jordan West 100% and get through this next stretch of games with enough wins to keep us in the mix. #FOE

I have a feeling Evan Day is out for the season. If he can't be ready within two weeks- and I don't mean cleared, but actually in game trim- he would be at the point where he'd miss 8 games. Missing 8 games is the threshold at which he could apply for medical hardship and get another year.

I suppose it all depends on his personal plan; you couldn't blame him if he said he's done with college and ready to move on. However, he could take the waiver and get another schollie year and move forward on an advanced degree... and that is always helpful in life.

I've hears Pulu is done for the season as well.

Put on your rally caps!

Didn't he miss almost all of last year as well? It sucks to see a kid lose multiple years.

Yeah, I know. I was just feeling really optimistic after a few cocktails. I still think we'll be AOK. I remember the same feeling when TJ went down. Spare me the whole "we had a better defense" speech. #5 knew how to pick up the slack and win it it all. Jordan will learn how too.

Was thinking to myself that I really can't remember a QB going down for this long in a while. I think Maybe Harry Lyons was out for a little time, but we have had a pretty good string of QB's without injuries.

Eastern Washington readies QB Jordan West

Just talked to a guy that is in one of my classes, he works for the football team, and said that VA will be back in the 3 week time frame. I guess they were very minor fractures and the team doc said he'll be back very soon. This is good news! Oh and he gave me some insight on what the uniforms are gonna look like for the military appreciation game, sounds like they're gonna be DOPE! :)

Thanks for passing the good news! I hope this is true. I'm always a little skeptical about telephone rumors, but if they were minor fractures, he could definitely be back in that time frame. I was wondering why they hadn't put some screws into his foot.

Can't wait for the uniforms. Is Military Appreciation next weekend?

Yeah, the military appreciation game is October 18th! Alumni and students who are veterans qualify for free tickets by stopping by the Veterans Resource Center in Showalter to pick them up! Just got mine.

I know it's only been two weeks, but I wonder if anyone has heard anything about how VA is doing? I think 3 weeks may have been an extremely optimistic prediction.

I'm calling BS on this. Maybe I could see him suiting up for the Montana or Portland game, but there is no way he will be back before that.

Total speculation here, but my guess is 4 weeks before he suits up again (Montana game), and playoffs before he plays again. Total guess, but what hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that he also suffered an MCL sprain along with the broken foot. I'm not sure how that effects the overall recovery time, but I think us fans should hunker down and get used to the idea that West will probably be leading the offense for the duration of the regular season. Sucks to think that VA may only get to play in half the games his Junior year, but it is what it is.

I talked with an athlete on the track team who mentioned that every trainer at Eastern was working with VA last week before practice. Also, it was mentioned that this injury can heal fairly quickly as long as that person stays off of it completely. He will be back for the North Dakota game, imo.

Thanks for the follow ups. I am always a little skeptical of internet rumors, but it's good to hear that it sounds like he is progressing on schedule.
