vs. Cal Poly: Official GDT

FWIW... what the hell was up with our defensive position? Why on Earth would we not contest the line of scrimmage against a team that is running all over us? Not only that, how often were our safeties a mile off the line of scrimmage when they pitched the ball? There were a lot of things to improve out there today; thank goodness those issues didn't cost us the game!
It's called playing not to lose, but since it never works, should just be called playing to lose.

We didn't want our DL to be chop-blocked and then have the ball pitched or kept with wide-open lanes to go 80 yards for the score. That was scrapped late in the first half and we started playing like men again.

A couple of you maybe need to sit the next game out.

Was that a frustrating and stressful game to watch? You bet.

Never count out the Eags. Staff made great adjustments to slow down their run game after halftime, and it was just enough, just in time.

Looked to me Kupp was double and triple covered most of the game, and yeah, we ran the ball a lot more than usual. But the ground game was there, and while I'm no QB, throwing with or against that kind of wind can't be easy. You all saw West's first and only deep shot down the field (with the wind)... sailed 10 yards past his man.

Bottom line, we got the win, more starters will coming back from injury, and we got a lot of young guys with experience the last couple games. Of you want to bitch, you know where eGriz is. :twocents:

After reading this post I agree that some of our so called "fans" need to chill out with the criticism. I was at the game today and it was a thrilling win. Every team is going to play games like this in a season, even the very good ones. So we are not blowing any teams out of the water, well guess what. Those other teams have good players too. We are so used to winning as a fan base that I fear that some of our "fans" have become entitled to it. I am old enough to remember when just winning the Big Sky was a big deal. Criticizing the play calling or coaches is ok but when people do it to the players it's not cool! Some of you need a time out, Go Eags!

That and there are likely to be many more games like this for the remainder of the season. There are no easy games on the schedule this year as it seems like basically every team in the Big Sky is capable of winning on any given day.

Um, is there any chance of watching a replay? I got ticked and turned the game off in 2nd quarter.

Can't figure out, there doesn't seem to be replay on the new version of streaming BSC. Anyways, probably a reason to stay ticked.

Players left it all out there in crunch time.
If you have a smart phone you can watch the replay with the WatchSWX app.

There is also a replay on the SWX channel tomorrow at 2 pm.

This game reminded me of the grit of the 2010 team. They never gave up today! I would love to see our team crushing other teams, but I think a win like this can actually be far more beneficial in the long run.

Also, there was a lot of frustration with the D today, but I thought the D really kept us in the game. We had four stops on a team that looked unstoppable in the first half. If the offense would have produced after we stopped Poly at least a couple of times, this game would have gotten out of reach quickly, as CP would have had to adjust their game plan.

I don't know how much the wind had to do with the passing game. To me, it looked like the passing game functioned well when we were using it. It seemed to me the play calling was too predictable, and not aggressive enough. It did not look like Eagle football except for the first drive, and the last five minutes of the game.

In any case, it was an odd game. And I'm glad to see the "Never Say Die" mentality is alive and well at EWU!

Did anyone see a replay of the defensive holding call on the first two point attempt. If you did, did you see the defensive holding. I did not see the game and was listening on the radio. The Cal Poly radio announcer was questioning the timing of the flag. He said it was not thrown until the Cal Poly player was out to about the 20 yard line on the return. I am not complaining or saying it was a bad call. I have seen various highlights of the game and they have not shown that play. I know the Cal Poly announcer was watching through his green and gold glasses (I have a pair) and I wanted to get your take on the call.

I didn't initially see it until they went back and showed it on replay. The DB got beat on the slant and had he not held it would have been a TD. I'm not sure about the timing of the flag, it seems like it was throw almost immediately.

Good enough. Great game. Once again, congrats.

It seemed like a pretty clear penalty to me. The DB grabbed his jersey and as a result of the tug you could really see how he got a handful. I've seen those calls not made before, but 90% of the time it'll draw the flag.

I was at the game yesterday and from my view it looked like Cooper was pushed, but I watched the replay this afternoon on SWX and it was clear that 11 grabbed and pulled on him. The flag was thrown immediately at Cooper 's feet. If he wasn't held he would have caught the pass.

It was a clear call.

Slo,

I was very pressed with your size and athleticism. You've had a brutal schedule and it doesn't get any easier the next two weeks with PSU and a resurgent SUU (since the SDSU debacle, they have been rolling folks. Best defensive player in the BSC in Cowser and a senior QB in Olsen who is come on).

But if you can get past those two, you've got a really good shot to run the table and you only have two road games left.

I'll be borrowimg those green and gold glasses. :thumb:

Btw,

Had an Observer Jr. sighting Saturday. Thanks for saying hi! Tell the old man to get his butt up for a game!

Thanks. At least we have a bye to get over this tough loss before taking on PSU and SUU.

Nothing but huge respect for the Eagles. Best of luck the rest of the season.

joemon,
Sorry to hear that you turned your TV off. Don't feel bad, I remembered 2010, we were playing NDSU at Roos Field. In the 4th qtr we was behind when our QB fumbled the ball. I left the game, thinking there was no way we was going to come back and win the game. It had snowed that day, so I went out to scrape the snow off my windshield. I was listening to the game on the radio while scraping the snow. We got the ball back with 2minutes 29 seconds on the clock, about 90 yards to go, I tried to get in so I can see the end of the 4qtr. I couldn't move to fast due to the snow/ice on the ground. I got back to the area, where I saw #33 Tyler Hart catching the TD from Levi Mitchell and the extra point, to send the game in OT. Since I have learned not to walk out/give up on the Eagles, they will find a win to win. 2010 we went to Kati Texas, fell behind by 19 points at the half. came back in the game and won by (1), 20-29. I will be lying if I sad I wasn't worried about the game Saturday. I have so much confidence in this team, I don't know what it will take to say we are going to lose a certain game. That is from watching these young Players and Coaches, practices almost every day, I have the confidence in their capabilities. I know we re all Humans, we make mistakes. Here is hoping our team it winning ways. Moved up to #7th, with the victory Saturday. Might miss this week practice, down with a very bad cold, coughing, sore ribs. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

To All,
Even with the double teaming of Cooper Kupp, Jordan West found Kendrick Bourne, Nic Sblendorio, and Big Terry Jackson 11, we have so much talent on this team. Can't shut down one and expect to defeat us, our QB will find someone else to go with. I was worried on the int in the minutes in the 4th qtr, but by holding Cooper, he was caught. I couldn't figure why we didn't go for two point conversion after our TD earlier, the man up above was with the Eagles and Eagle Fans. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Team left it all on the field. Great win for a myriad of reasons. Thought the defense was starting to step up a bit, multiple 3 and outs for the Eag offense made the defenses job tougher. Using the ESPN euphemism "eye test", Eastern looked like a good very much the superior team.

Still wondering if there was any reason this game was close?

Those who thought the game would be close, were right? Don't think it was for the reason most often stated, i.e. ball control by CP; more like lack of control by Eag offense. Anyone concerned?

It was a weird game. Zero turnovers, they dominate TOP and total yardage. They should have won. I'm a little concerned with offesnsive productivity and as concerned as ever with how we get dominated up front on D. If Raynes doesn't play, I'm not sure we win that game.

Still, Poly has a good D and they put up close to those yardage numbers on everyone.
