:ohno:
22 of 42 for 239 yards. 1TD, 1Int.

Facts are facts. GG sucked Wildcat ass today. This is Gage Gubrud without THREE NFL caliber receivers and a PAC12 caliber HC.

The thing that annoys me is that we have no commitment to running the ball. In many games, we couldn't run it so it was sort of water under the bridge. But we ran it pretty well today and just chose not to do it, even in a lot of short yardage situations. And when we did it in short yardage, we did it out of shotgun with a back 8 yards deep instead of just getting up and hitting the hole. We seriously need a rethink of our short yardage strategy.

I think we have much more commitment than years past and we've actually had decent success with it too. I just think we're too quick to abandon it. On the drive that we could have tied the game on, we didn't even try to run the ball at all - even with 2:30 left on the clock. The result was Weber being able to tee off on Gubrud because they knew we were going to throw the ball every time.

I like the additional emphasis on the running game this year and I think we are trending in the right direction in that regard. I would just like to see us be a little more creative with how we're calling our plays on offense.

We don't have a single receiver that can run a deep route or make a catch in traffic.

I think #10 can and probably a couple of other guys too. But I do believe the problem is a little bit of what you described combined with poor play from Gubrud. There have been plenty of times that he has overthrown on deep routes and plenty of other times where he puts the ball behind the receiver, and other times where the ball comes off his hand totally out of wack. I noticed that a lot today. Don't know if it was weather related or what was going on.

IMHO, Gabe Gubrud is not only the best QB on the Eagle roster, he is as excellent good QB, but for some reason, his passing doesn't appear to be as crisp this year, nor does he seem to have quite the eye for accuracy we enjoyed in 2016. Or might it be the opposing teams have honed in on his skills, moves and timing? True we were blessed with phenomenal receivers last year, but Gabe's ability made each of their successes possible. Although we're disappointed with today's breaks and result, let's also remember that Weber has a good team too. Unless I missed it during the sporadic TV coverage, I believe that the Eagles incurred no injuries today, and was successful in TO prevention.

The reality is this isn't a very good team, yet we're 5-4 and still have a shot at the playoffs. Credit the coaches for getting us into a position to at least have a modicum of success this year. And credit Gubrud as well, because there really isn't anyone else on the offense that has had more than a single good game here or there. This looks a lot like the 2015 team except with much less talent at receiver.

The thing that annoys me is that we have no commitment to running the ball. In many games, we couldn't run it so it was sort of water under the bridge. Also credit where it's due, I thought Calhoun and Kupp had good games today. Our DL and secondary, not so much.

Really? Not sure what game you watched, but I want what you're smoking...puff pass.... Every position group struggled, including LBs, period. It's not the talent level of these groups it is the defensive scheme IMO.

There are some team issues that have to be addressed in the offseason, including some staffing issues. Important changes are needed and I hope coach Best makes them otherwise this product will continue to be tough to watch next year.

1) Weber is good
2) We had a good chance to win this game...really good
3) GG had 2 yards running..WTF let the sob run..for crying out loud! Our offense works best when GG runs and is on the run...things happen...we score pts and we win. Are they afraid he'll get hurt?...he's getting clobbered as it is.
4) Let GG do his thing...we win out.. we make playoffs and we can win a playoff game if we don't get fancy smancy...think coaches are trying to hard to force some orchestrated game plan...get the handcuffs off him!
5) Let the "D" starting flying around...looks like they are playing scared...who gives a rip if they make mistakes? maybe we can get some more to's and some mojo going on around here.

I agree, GG should be running first passing second.

I agree, GG should be running first passing second.

He was effective with designed runs in last year's offense. While he's made some plays improvising, Gage has not been effective with designed runs AT ALL this year.

My takeaways...

Agree with Dopa that our receivers are having a tough time creating separation.

Our front 4 did not pressure Cantwell very much and when we blitzed, we were late just like in the SUU game, making an ok QB look great.

On the other hand, it seemed like Weber continuously had someone loose up the middle forcing Gage out of the pocket, but then a second rusher almost immediately in his face on the edge.

Our last possession, Weber blitzed, blitzed, blitzed. Love that aggression on their part but we also need to be able to make teams pay for that. There seems to be little fear that Gage is going to get the ball out quickly and beat a blitz.

The 3 RB formation on 3rd and goal with a belly play up the middle was puzzling. Roll out Gage and pass it on 3rd. If nothing is there, he throws it away and you still have the ability to run it on 4th with less than a yard.

We have lost to 4 really good teams.

Gage is still the best offensive weapon we have. It's dopey to think otherwise.

This is a very good post.

And to those calling for staffing changes, I assure you, you have no clue what you are talking about. Scheme changes I can get behind, but ripping up contracts after the four losses we have had this year is just ridiculous.

Not for staff changes, but for a self-evaluating all scheme processes (hell it's probably just growing pains). But it is still worth self-evaluation. Yes, we only lost 4 games, but I sense a downward trend that needs to be stopped, stabilized and (hopefully) start to tick upward. I do believe now that Coach best has a year under his belt as HC, he'll get it done.

I also believe GG is the guy pure and simple. We just have to find more plays for him based on his skill set to start to build confidence on Offense, which will help defense. I think GG has a lot more to give, we just have to do a better job of putting him in the right position to be successful.

I do wonder how GG would do in the type of read-option formations that Arizona is running and what we saw Texas run against Seahawks. I believe if we ran a lot truer read-option formations and runs, he would thrive in that. Plus it's a clock controlling system that produces rushing yards. Just thinking GG would maybe thrive with that type of play calling. I think we maybe also seeing growing pains and we'll see some improvements next year in the spring.

We are in the uncomfortable position of re-building.

Where is tamarak pierce? He had 7 tds last year and is perfect in our goal line sets...could have used him yesterday just like we did all last year

I actually love Custer and McPherson but we need that goal line bruiser...

Agreed. Gage has got to play better. When you lose to a team with a worse ranking it’s called an upset. One more loss and it’s bye-bye playoffs. Coach Best better do something, because I love seeing EWU make playoff runs.

I stand by saying Kupp and Calhoun had a good game. Stat line showed 23 tackles between them. Weber didn't have a lot of success running through the middle except when they went on a QB draw. The coverage issues generally came from safeties being too deep to make plays. I'll give you that I'd like to see a schematic change, though. Who are we on defense these days? Can anyone answer that one? We've been set up as a 4-2 team, but now it seems like we're in 3-4 sets most often and rarely show a 40 front. We show 3-3 more than 4-2.

We need a power set that we are committed to in short yardage situations. I don't care what it looks like, we could show up in a wishbone for all I care. But get Gubrud under center and feed the ball to a guy a yard deep to hit the hole quick. These slow developing delayed handoffs to a deep back when we only need half a yard is absurd.
