Personally, I don't think he'll be ready to go. He's still in a walking boot. I'm hoping for the Portland State game.

Expect a lot of smoke and mirrors from the coaching staff. They are going to make Montana prep for VA regardless of whether he plays. Personally, I think if they announce he will play late in the week, then JW is the starter. If we get total silence, VA could very well be cleared.

Baldwin should close practices this week. I know for a fact Montana has had spies at practice in the past.

+1 He should definitely close practices.

Yes, he'll play. The only way it doesn't happen is if there is some major setback between now and then. You're not going to keep this kid out of a game of this magnitude. Regardless of how healthy the foot is, his heart is strong enough to make sure he's on the field.

Tough to close practice, Inferno and practice fields are not exacly Fort Knox.

We have practice fields.

He will not play against UM. I really think it is best he uses the next two weeks to heal and be in the best condition for the Playoffs. Use the PSU game to get back into the flow and go into the playoffs strong.

The situation is really interesting. It seems both situations are a gamble one way or another.

1. Play VA in the Griz game. Risk having him being reinjured and go into playoffs without him. How far into playoffs can we get without him?
2. Don't play VA in the Griz game. Risk not beating the Griz and missing playoffs/not having any home playoff games.

I really think we can beat the Griz with JW. I really think NAU was better than UM. I say we start JW and have VA on the side ready to jump in if things go south.

I think we can beat UM with JW in the game, <if> he plays within himself. Part of that is on Baldwin. I think he did a much better job of calling the game to keep JW in his comfort zone. He seemed to play a lot better yesterday - timing was still a little off on some of those deep balls but they were <just> off.

The best scenario going forward is that we beat Montana somehow and then those two additional weeks we get prior to the PSU game VA starts practicing. Assuming he can play, it'd be good to get him live reps prior to the playoffs.

There is no way he is playing next week. If he did, it would be questioned forever, particularly if it was re-aggravated, same vein as RG3 coming back in the 2nd half against the Seachickens in 2012 wildcard playoffs, has had him messed up ever since.

You guys are nuts. He'll play. I think he'd have played this weekend if the coaches thought UND was credible. Broken metatarsals aren't a huge issue... typically recovery time is one month. There's really no concern of making the problem worse if he plays, if he can't handle the pain, you sit him and bring him back in two weeks.

It is a rare occasion when LdopaPDX is this optimistic. :D

Don't forget, he also hurt his MCL, which reinjury can have severe consequences.

Does anyone have any inside information or is this all just personal opinions?

Having broken the same bones in both feet at different times as VA, I know that he can come back relatively quickly from that injury. If it is only the foot I say he plays Saturday, but if it is his knee too then we might be with West again. Of course this is only my opinion which doesn't carry much weight.

No inside information will make it to this board. We want Montana have to take the time to prepare for both quarterbacks.
