'08 Recruits

Here is the latest info I have found out.

Report #1 says we recruit just like the low end RMAC teams (not a good sign IMHO). Apparently we are just now formulating the list of who we want to sign in February. The other D1 schools are done with that and have identified the juniors they want and are in recruiting them for next years class.

Report #2 says that the UNC recruiting rep is head and shoulders above last years guy. Much more organized than prior years. Still not on par with the other D1 schools but a big improvement.

Curiously no names have surfaced so I do not know what positions the staff is targeting this year.

I do know this is the period where coaches and recruits can't have contact until after Christmas.

If we're not out recruiting RMAC schools we will never compete in the BSC. Name your sources uncfootballrules.

No, we'll take the murderers. We just hope that they plea down to "Attempted Manslaughter". Just for a season or two.

I can't specifically name them, I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate that. My sources are high school coaches whom I know. So they represent (an admittedly small sample size of) people that would have decent insight to several different recruiting methods (i.e. they get to see pretty much every school that comes in to recruit) and be able to state an opinion as to how UNC is faring. I'm trying to get some info for us to talk about not publish a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Beardown, I can't quite peg you. You bash anyone who has anything bad to say about Downing which is fine by me. You are entitled to your opinion just like the rest of us. However, I do not appreciate you calling people unethical and accusing them of making up stories. If you like what is going on that is fine, I have no problem with it. Just voice your opinion counter to mine and we can debate it.

I think when you have won only 2 games in two years it's everyone's fault. The players AND coaches. However, I do believe there were a lot of things wrong with this program when Dalton was here and they're coming to light now. I know I am going to get crucified by the pro-Dalton people on here like Ursa and Bear2003. It's just my opinion take it for what it's worth. So of course I think it's fair to critisize the new coaching staff. Is it all their fault? NO!

I want to see some of these young guys develop and then judge if Downing was the right guy or not. So far it doesn't look good for him, but you never know what next year will turn out.

I think Beardown has a secret man crush on Downing
Or he just doesnt like it when peole know facts he never even thought about.
And by the way they can recruit during this time it is just limited to one call a week(per recruit). Starting next week til after the first of the year is a no contact period.
Beardown do me a favor and name your sources! Lol

Beardown, I don't take issue with you. I take issue with statements like, " There were a lot of problems with the program under Dalton and they're coming to light now!" What problems? Seems like to me the problems have come during Downing's shift. Does that make it easy to blame Dalton? I guess. Everyone has been doing it since Dalton left. Nothing like kicking the last winning coach we've had around here. Why? Because he's not on here to defend himself, so I guess that some of us have to step up to do it.
Personally, I'd like to know the bug up your ass you have towards Dalton. Was he a gruff S.O.B.? Hell yeah, but he also knew a lot about football, and it seems to me that we need someone around here that knows something about football because apparently, we don't have too many up in the Athletic offices that do. Get off of the Dalton kick, it's getting old.

I guess technically he was a winning coach--his record at UNC was 38-31. However, most of those wins were against Adams State, Western State, New Mexico Highlands, and schools of that caliber. While I do have my doubts about whether downing could beat new mexico highlands, that doesn't mean Dalton was the man for the job. Dalton was just a grumpier version of downing. They both did nothing but make excuses about how our team is outclassed and actually a D-2 team playing D-1 football. Dalton would constantly cry about UNC's decision to move to D-1--that is not leadership, at least, not good leadership. UNC absolutely made the right decision canning Dalton it just appears that they dropped the ball hiring downing.

Holy cow I've read it all now. Dalton was at UNC for about 20 years. He was the OC for all of the years that Glenn was the head coach. So if you want to pull in his record you might want to credit him for some of those wins also. Dalton also took the team to the D2 semi-finals as head coach one year if we all recall. Everyone wants to blame the current mess on Dalton. Give me a break. I GUARANTEE THAT IF DALTON WAS STILL HERE WE WOULD HAVE MORE THAN 2 WINS THE LAST TWO YEARS. Downing ran off the vast majority of Dalton's recruits so this team is pretty squarely on his shoulders. Dalton also worked with less coaches, less money and fewer scholarships than Downing has. EWU's sophomores played in the quarterfinals this year. What did ours do? You want me to keep going?

My point is that if Dalton had to go, OK. The current mess is not his fault (or it is such a small percentage of the fault it is not even calculable). This mess lies with Downing and Hinrichs. If Dalton had to go, fine. The replacement is not working out so lets move on to plan C.

What I don't get is the whole thing about Dalton complaining. Here is a guy that coached at all levels of football from high school to the pro's, so when he said something about the game, or what level we should be playing at, I tended to listen. I'm sure that if Downing has a successful season, and he sticks around, we will all respect his opinion about all things football. uncfootball rules has made an excellent point, Dalton did more with less. I'm trying to stay positive about Downing, but the whole plan "C" thing is looking more interesting all the time.

That should be on a tee shirt next season:

Northern Colorado Football
" We're Warning the Entire Big Sky...
Don't Make Us Open Up a Can of Plan C "

Now we're getting somewhere!! In the last week alone we've prepared a master facility plan, a fundraising program and have straightened out the football situation. Let's get Kay on this board so she can see the light. Hinrichs should be gone by year end and this board will serve as the new AD. :D :D

As long as I get an office with a window and an unlimited drink tab in the High Plains Room...I'm in. See how well everything flows as long as people are on the same page!

I'll give Dalton credit that he was a good OC but that doesn't mean he was a good head coach. I will also agree that we would have more than two wins with Dalton. However, being a better coach than downing is not a very high hurdle--Dalton's record would have still been horrid. He would have still been well below .500 which is still unacceptable.

I really like the idea of plan C and I'll buy one of those t-shirts too Ursa.

No problem. I just sent all of our suggesetions over to Kay's office. I expect a reply soon because...Hold on, a UNC Police car just showed up in front of my house..." Hey, don't taz me bro....." AARRRGGGHHH!!!

The coaches have been recruiting since right after Thanksgiving. They went to JCs in Kansas, Arizona, Texas, Minnesota, and Iowa to start. Now they are working on in state guys...They had a recruiting weekend last weekend and are having another one this weekend where they are bringing in jcs and guys from other colleges...their high school guys they are talking to won't come to greeley until jan.
