'08 Recruits

Palmer running back Jon Burnley 2stars has an offer from us too. He was on track to go to Wyoming but the new offensive coordinator pulled the offer saying the cowboys weren't going to offer a running back this year.

He took his visit to UNC on the 19th. “If I like it up there, I’m just going to verbally commit. I might just stay out there (for four years) and help them become winners.” - rivals.com

Good article in the Tribune talking about the recruiting class.

It's a bit curious Downing's kid would come here considering we never use a fullback. I think this is good, hopefully now we will use a fullback more and bring on the power run game I'm all for it!

The Coloradoan reports Kelly has rescinded his oral commit to Montana State after being offered by Colorado State.

I've got to throw this one out so that I have a clear conscience. I've seen Andrew Downing play and he was a good player. That being said, I don't think that he should be offered a scholarship. He was not a "stellar" player. Good, even upper average, but no where near the caliber of player that UNC needs to compete in the Big Sky. If he had been offered a walk on opportunity, I would have said "great... let him compete for a position". As it stands, I think that we just threw away a chance for an in state kid that could have made an impact. I know that with this next question, I will be going against my "football is football no matter what level" philosophy, but why are we recruiting a DII kid if we are trying to compete at the next level? I mean c'mon, someone here has to back me up, because I've been reading for over a year now that we have a bunch of " Kay Dalton, DII, can't compete" players, and now we are actively recruiting DII kids? I hate to say it, but next year if UNC has to shit can Downing, how hard will his kid want to play for us? I hope that I am wrong, and you guys can come to my tailgate, drink all my beer, and do the "told you so" dance if I am, but I just have a bad feeling about this one.

I already like this Kelly kid, and I will probably never see him play. Any kid that turns down a Montana school is okay in my book :D. I'm also really impressed that this Bryan Waggener kid would turn down both Delaware and Wagner College to come here . I just hope that he is as helpful as Breazeale and Vlahogeorge had been. My money is on Orms.

Jezuss Ursa, why are you so negative? Let's see how these guys pan out before we make any judgements.

I don't know, I think I side with Ursa on this one. I have not seen Downing play, but 5'10" fullbacks are not what is going to put us over the top. Not sure how big a scholarship he got but don't university employees get to send their kids for free? If not, lets put in that rule and we've solved the problem (at least for 1 year anyway!). Actually the best of both worlds as you get two kids in for the price of one!

I hope the Florida transfer pans out. Unfortunately they almost never do. It just gets the alums all excited and nothing good happens. Somebody tell me the last big name transfer that came in and made a major impact. Dillan Micus comes to mind, but beyond that I don't remember a lot of them.

Andy Birkel was pretty good for us. He was much better before his injury though.

Negative? I said that the kid was good. What do you want? He is probably the only kid that we have recruited that I have seen in person, and again, he was a decent 4A player. Now, do the math, each 4A school has a fullback, each 5A, 3A, 2A, and 1A school probably has one also. Lets just say that Colorado has 50 ( a very conservative number) high schools with football programs. Take that number and multiply it by 50 states. So, we have 2500 fullbacks wanting to play college football somewhere and we choose the coaches kid? As I stated, I hope he pans out; I hope he puts UNC on the map, but three little words keep popping into my mind...CONFLICT OF INTEREST. I knew a coach in high school that had his kid attend another high school so that there would not be a CONFLICT OF INTEREST. His son went on to play at C.U., but at no point did this guy think he made a wrong decision or worry about a CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
As far as employee's children and free tuition, I heard that applies to Professors only. I could be wrong.
I think that to be on the up and up, Downing should pay for the first year of school, let the kid walk on, and if he makes it...he gets a scholarship, year two.
Beardown, what do you mean by "Let's see if he pans out"? Our record under the current coach is 2-21(?). Nothing he has done has "panned out". Now he is putting his staff in a difficult position by saying, " Hey...how about recruiting my kid?" I'm sorry Beardown, but now I'm REALLY starting to question Downing's decision making capabilities.
I'm being very serious when I say "Good Luck" to Andrew Downing, he's carrying a lot on his shoulders.

I think we should just focus on and hope that some of these players recruited by Downing so far during his tenure as head coach help whom ever replaces him in 2009. At this point thats all we can hope for.......everything else is, well meaningless at this point( And it would be nice to win the Homecoming game, again)

But it's not un-heard of for a coach to recruit his son. Joe Glenn recruited Casey to play at UNC and he really didn't turn out. He ended up playing at Carrol
College. Look at what Cody Hawkins, etc. I don't think Downing is that type of person that he would recruit his son if he wasn't good enough. I know the article says he was looking at some D2 schools but he might have had the opportunity to play at Ohio and some other FBS school as well.

A new recruiting class is our hope for the future and after the last couple years that's all we've got at this point so I'll be excited about whoever they bring in up and until they get on the field and disapoint me. It's sort of like buying the lottery ticket, before the drawing you can sit around and daydream about how great it's going to be to win and then realize the reality when you match zero numbers...

I couldnt agree more..........

and as far as the homecoming game........lets worry about scoring before winning the game.......neither of which will happen under Downing.........

Here's the official list from uncbears.com

I think it's a good class but we'll see in a couple years. I like Hernon and the wide reciever from Cali-Poly high school especially. Looks like a solid class!

I see that former Bears lb Thomas Bauer is going to play for MOntana next season.

Does anyone know where Wiedeman ended up at?
