2014 Starting 5

You are reading too much into what coach had to say. Don't equate someone being better than expected to mean playing time. You don't know what the initial expectations were. What if someone were to say that a guy wasn't quite as good as expected when they were expected to be a star. Maybe that player would still be good enough to start, just not be the star. 'Better than expected' only means something in context, and we don't have that context.

I'm just saying .... :wall:

I think Rahe is playing some mind games with us. I watched his interview and he played coy in his comments. It's obvious he's trying to not give away any of his plans to the rest of the conference.

Talking to the players in class, the kids who are really tearing it up in practice coach Rahe downplays their performance. I don't have a clue what we're going to see when the season starts, but I'm confident that whatever coach tells you at this point in the season to take with a grain of salt! He's playing it old school!

Coach could also be playing some mind games with his players. Building a guy up who has been a little down, intentionally failing to praise a player performing well to motivate him to do just a bit more, and generally trying to keep the whole team engaged and looking for a little more out of themselves. I'm sure that he has an idea of who he will be starting and what the rotation might look like, but he is not going to make any final decisions until the first game and he is forced to put it out there. The players themselves surely have a good idea of who is on top and who is not. These guys compete against each other every day. All of these guys are talented. They wouldn't be here if they weren't. :thumb: :thumb:

Funny thing that a number of poster's attack a poster because of his "supposed" insider information and the posters belief that he understands and knows what coach is thinking, and then they do the exact things that they attack the offending poster for supposedly doing. Ha!! Ridiculous how it is okay for one person to do something, but no for another person to do the exact same thing that that person is doing.

Anyway, since I don't know anything about what coach is doing and I'm not going to try to act like I have the inside track on his mind and thoughts, and most importantly, since today is the first official day of practice, all I can go off of is what I saw from the guys last year and any type of recruiting report. Oh, and Tal's uniquely exploitive posts (I sometimes wonder what he is smoking) framing him as the guru of Weber State Basketball rather than benefiting and supporting the team. I'm sure I'll be getting some strange Hyperbole from him or his idiot friend catcat.

So, basketball practice officially starts today. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Jefferson and one other freshman will end up redshirting this season. It is for their benefit to do so. I like Senglin and Bolomboy starting, but Bolomboy has got to remember he is only an NC2A DI player right now, not an NBA player and that he has a lot of work and development left to get to that point. He can't start slow like last year. No stepping back. As for the others, we will just have to wait and see. I think Rahe was, weird, being totally honest in his interview and really does think Hayden Hunter is doing well and has impressed him so far. Does that mean playing time? No! It just means he has impressed coach. Also, coach said that both JC guys will "contribute" and will "participate" this season. How much? Who knows. All we know is that coach said that they would.

Good hell, all I do is express my opinion that Hunter might get significant playing time and you all get riled up. Who else is going to be the backup PG? It's just my opinion. I never said Rahe said he was going to get playing time. I only mentioned what Rahe said about Hunter. I didn't attribute my opinion of him getting playing time to Rahe, or anyone else. Lighten up, you losers.

Amen!! I totally agree SWeber...who is going to be our backup at point? Personally, I feel that it is going to be Golden. He is a combo guard, much like Davion was, who could end up playing all three guard positions. Even with Golden, we know that 1 of the two freshman most likely to play the point will not red shirt. Because of what the Wizard said the other day at the media event, I think we can anticipate Hayden being the freshmen most likely to play. I hope that isn't too much Voodoo for you PeePeeforlife.

I agree with Tal and SW about backing up Senglin at point. Golden appears to be the first option. However, you need a plan C in case of foul trouble or injuries. Hunter could be the third option. Maybe they hold him out just in case they never have to get to the third option and thus preserve a year of eligibility for him. If they were forced to, they could burn his RS year. As has been said, it looks like at least one of the Fr guards will need to play, but which one? If any of the walk-on guards can win some PT, it could change things. We went through these same issues last year at the PG position. Maybe Hunter can help solidify the situation a bit. I'm hoping for no injuries and no foul trouble, but I know that is not realistic. :coffee:

Cat, I wasn't referencing you, but some other newer posters.

It's all good

I don't think we are going to have a solid starting 5 until we play USU. There is still too much water that must pass under that bridge. :ugeek:

Wouldn't be surprised if there were changes all year long! Young team..... Lots of favorable match ups against a lot of BSC teams.

Red shirt decisions could come after the Purple/White game........ Deep enough to run two platoons. Going to be a very interesting month. The future of the program looks very bright.

6 days till the purple and white!! From what I have heard practices have been going really well. The two JCs have really been playing well, along with Hayden. Looking like a few question marks should be answered within the next couple of weeks.

To me it looked like the starting 5 will be

PG: Senglin
SG: Golden
SF: Gittens
PF: Hill
C : Bolomboy

I think we will see Braxton and Hunter being the first two off the bench. Hajek, Coston, and Richardson/Jefferson will end up seeing time as well.

A 9-10 man rotation? We usually see that during the preseason, but by conference, Rahe usually goes back to an 8 man rotation.

The more I think about it, the more I just don't see Braxton red shirting. He is too good to red shirt. He needs to play. By conference he could be comfortable and playing at a really high level. I don't see any other bigs in the Sky, as an underclassmen, being as good and skilled as Braxton. The kid could end up being on a post-season team. He is that good.

Tal, you finally make sense. How on earth could Braxton RS this season? He is a stud. He's got to play.

Potential looks great but he's nowhere ready. He won't be able to stay on the floor mor than 10 minutes either due to foul trouble, conditioning, or both.

Watched the game..... Didn't see problems with conditioning. He also only had 2-3 fouls! I'm not sure what you saw that we missed. The only negative I took from his time on the court was the moving screens ( but at least he was setting screens)!

:+1:

Just my opinion, but I think it would be a huge disservice to Zack and the team to play him this year, when his role would be so small. In my evaluation, he is the #5 big man in the system and would rarely see any PT. Next year, after a years development and added maturity, he could be a substantial contributor.

Why burn a year for nothing? :twocents:
