2016/17 schedule

Great Alaska Shootout? Again Rahe is taking his team to Alaska. Oh well, I'm happy with the tournament. This is a start at least.
Would love to see Weber in one of those Vegas tournaments sometime.

The Missoulian's Kyle Sample just tweeted that the Montana Grizzlies 2016-17 hoops schedule will be announced later this week.

Some hints from Kyle, though:

The Griz open their season at USC. Then there's the previously announced Paradise Jam -- where they open against North Carolina State -- and a possible match with Ole Miss in the Jam. However, a road game at Ole Miss is also on the schedule, as well as a home-and-home series with Wyoming, and home games against UW-Milwaukee, San Jose State and Pepperdine. Also a road game at South Dakota and an as-yet-to-be-finalized road game against an "elite 8" team, as Kyle describes it.
I sure would love to see WSU have a legit schedule. The Griz have some real good home games (for a Big Sky Team) so I am really hoping that WSU will have something similar.

Good find AJ.

That sounds like a great schedule. I'm hopeful, but not counting on our home schedule being anywhere near that good. I'm just judging by past schedules. I really do hope that it will be an improvement from last years, piece of crap, home schedule. :yikes:

If Weber would put part of Rahe's salary dependent upon his out of conference SOS ranking in the top 40 in the NCAA, you would get instant results....guaranteed....no more excuses needed....

Our overall schedule was fairly good last year. With the exception of the SDSU game, the HOME schedule was poor. I'm hoping that this year we get return matches with Portland and Denver. With UVU, that would at least give us three decent home games. What I don't like to see is more than one less than D1 game on the schedule. Then I don't want that one game to be from some school that nobody has ever heard of...., Multnomah...., really!

It wouldn't really take much of an upgrade to make people happy. Montana has proved that there are potential home and home deals out there. We may just have to play at some places that our coaches don't like, in order to get the return matches that we want. I'm a proponent of a scheduling department, within the athletic department, and get it away from the coaches altogether. It would be better for the coaches, the programs, and the rest of the community. :coffee:

Our overall schedule BLEW last year, and since when should UVU and Denver be considered a decent home game?

They're considered decent simply because they're D1. And don't forget that both defeated Weber last season.

Latest draft of conference schedule I've seen shows ISU and Weber playing Portland State and Sac only on the road and Southern Utah and NAU only at home. This was a fairly current version and I've been told it's pretty close to final.

That will make Sac and PSU happy, to not have to play two good teams at altitude. NAU and SUU are probably not thrilled at the thought of not getting a chance at us on their home floors, at an even higher altitude. I wish they would just go to the 22 game schedule. :wall:

From what I've heard, take this with a grain of salt, is that the Denver contract is a home and home deal. They should be at the Dee next year. I'm wondering about Portland, but I think we got $$$ from that game.

Also heard through the grapevine that the Sky is working on some conference vs. conference match ups. I bet the deal will be Big Sky vs. WAC ugh...but I do have my fingers crossed hoping for a conference challenge with the Summit League.

Makes me wonder if there is a conference vs conference challenge if all 12 Big Sky teams will take part in it?
The Big Sky has 12 teams, but there aren't many other 12 team Mid major conferences (MAC, Ohio Valley), unless you make it so maybe top 6 of each conference play each other? Im guessing it will be another MId Major conference, and most likely a similar conference like the Big West or WAC, but a Big Sky vs Summit would be sweet. I am already ruling the WCC out, no way are teams like BYU, St Mary's or Gonzaga playing in a Big Sky venue, (aside from BYU playing at Weber).

Big Sky vs Summit
1. Weber State vs South Dak St
2. Montana vs IPFW
3. Idaho vs Omaha
4. Idaho State vs IUPUI
5. E Wash vs North Dak St
6. North Dak vs Denver

Most likely though

Big Sky vs Big West
1. Weber State vs Hawaii
2. Montana vs UC Irvine
3. Idaho vs Long Beach St
4. Idaho State vs UCSB
5. E.Wash vs UC Davis
6. North Dakota vs UC Riverside

Big Sky vs WAC
1. Weber St vs N.Mex St
2. Montana vs Grand Canyon
3. Idaho vs Bakersfield
4. Idaho State vs Seattle
5. E.Wash vs Utah Valley
6. North Dakota vs UMKC

My guess is if all 12 actually compete the Big Sky will be going up against the Ohio Valley, only other real Mid Major with 12 teams.

1. Weber State vs Belmont
2. Montana vs Tenn-Martin
3. Idaho vs Tenn State
4. Idaho State vs Murray State
5. Eastern Wash vs Morehead State
6. North Dakota vs E. Illinois
7. Montana State vs Tenn Tech
8. Portland State vs Austin Peay
9. Northern Colorado vs E. Kentucky
10. Sacramento State vs SIU Edwardsville
11. Southern Utah vs Jacksonville St
12. Northern Ariz vs SE Missouri St

According to the schedule I've seen conference play begins Dec. 29 with ISU at Montana and Weber State at MSU. Those teams would swap opponents on New Year's Eve. The two Montanas come to Pocatello and Odgen the last week of the season (March 2-4) with Montana playing at Weber first, then MSU coming to Ogden. Still not official but getting close.

Weber State, Idaho State, Montana and Montana State against each other to begin and end the season.

Should it be any other way?

Any word on when the schedule will be released?

My guess is they are still trying to finalize some games like maybe they are working on a H&H or working on getting a guarantee with a power school. it may even be conference wide considering Montana's schedule was supposed to come out 2 weeks ago and still hasn't. Which could have something to do with a conference vs conference matchup kind of thing that talhad was talking about.

+ last year the schedule didn't get released till about the end of July, so I'm guessing it'll be awhile still.

In an effort to help fill our home schedule I have looked up a number of schools who could come to the Dee and really help fill up the stands. I figure we need, three, maybe four, beats to visit the Dee. Goodness, just imagine watching some of the below teams in HD on KJZZ!!

These are some of the best that NAIA has to offer:

Freed-Hardeman University (Ron would really have to hand out a lot of cup cakes for this match up)
Graceland Univesity (for halftime we could have an Elvis impersonator)
Hannibal-Legrange University (halftime, for you history majors, could be a reenactment of Hannibal crossing the Alps)
Life University (I mean, who doesn't want life?)
Park University (Go Pirates!! They have a campus at Hill AFB. MARKETING COUP!! Dare I say, this could be an INSTATE Match up.)
Peru State College (Who knew?)
Paul Quinn College (I think this is a cosmetology school...we could have their team, after the game, do a demonstration)
The Master's College (Hell, who wouldn't want to play the MASTER's, I didn't know a golf tournament had their basketball team)
Voorhees College (That's what Monika said to Bill)
Xavier University (Yes, there is a NAIA team...we could invite these guys to Ogden. Kick their asses and then claim it was a rematch of last years NCAA Tourny game).

If not NAIA...why not SWAC teams? I heard that Grambling was one of the better teams in NCAA DI last year. Hell, playing them is like playing SUU or UNCO, bottom of the RPI. It would be like a conference game.

Tal what an awesome game. Guess the NAIA cupcake. Let me see if Ye Old Cupcake Shoppe will give the winner a free cupcake or 6. Brandon Garside should do pretty well at this game. He is quite selective when the cupcakes hit media row. I have watched him take close to 5 minutes just to pick a damn cupcake.

Here are my picks for guess the NAIA cupcakes:
Central Christian College (KS) Enrollment = 259
University of St. Mary (KS) Enrollment = 400
Webber International University (FL) Enrollment = 659
William Carey University (MS)Enrollment = 0 (not sure how that works)
University of the Southwest (NM) Enrollment = 0
I also vote for Paul Quinn College Enrollment = 450
