Your receivers are going to have their hands full. #noflyzone

I can't wait to see you eat your crow. Maybe SHSU should just transfer the entire starting corps for the FBS school, Oregon State. Those FBS transfers can stop anything we throw at them!

Xavier Smith is another benchwarmer. Two fans on the Mizzou forum had him projected as 3rd or fourth string CB in 2014 which is probably why he transferred.

This game is going to be an absolute embarrassment for SHSU. They lost all of their studs, we lost none of ours. This game won't be close, and close in this game would be within 2 tds....

Full of balls that is!!!
There will be so many open receivers VA will be totally confused as to whom to throw the ball to!

If this game wasn't on national Tv I would say it's a no win situation for EWU and a nothing to lose situation for SHSU. EWU needs a blowout IMHO. A close game against a team as inexperienced as the Kats this year could hurt seeding at some point. Based on my observations of last years game, the EWU O-Line and D-line should be the biggest concern for Eagle fans this year. VA is dynamic, but even he has to have time. Last year he was hurried the entire game. I was shocked that the EWU coaches never schemed to provide help. I'm guessing they won't make the same mistake this season.

Eastern's game against Sam Houston was the low point of the season. After beating Oregon State in the opener, Eastern limped through the next 5 games like a zombie. It wasn't until the staff shook up the team before the Southern Utah game that things started falling into place.

Definitely the low point to the season. As far as the game, I don't think we need a blow-out whatsoever. A win against a solid FCS team, even in a close one, will be sufficient to keep us towards the top of the polls.

SHSU has a good program so I don't think a close score would or is going to hurt us at all provided we win the game. I don't understand why some think this is going to be a blowout game, should be close. Also good assessment on the o-line and d-line, I think those are the main areas of concern going into fall camp along with CB. We lost some good players there.

We did lose a few of ours. TJ Lee, Pulu, Larry, Clark, Miller, Forgette, Brown, and Baines come to mind.

That projection was according to one guys assessment on an internet message board. Our db's will be very good, better than 2013. Minus QB and -MAYBE- wr, SHSU will be more talented at every position and will have better depth, too. KCK has done a great job in bringing in top level talent to plug some of the holes. But keep thinking that we're going to be way down this year, hopefully your team and coaches are thinking the same.

They aren't. At 0-3 versus the Kats, the team will be playing for blood. If SHSU isn't solid (which I think they will be) it will be a blood bath. As much as I would love to see that, I don't think that would be a good showing for the first FCS College Football Season kickoff on ESPN. Keeler's a good coach. You guys still have a lot of talent. And you guys continue to be an Albatross for our team. If EWU loses, it will be because they let that get into their heads a little too much. If you guys start strong, that could be challenging to overcome. That being said, EWU has done a good job of not giving up if they get behind.

The talent will be there at enough positions for us to compete. But our secondary will be very green, at least playing with each other and having chemistry. The key to our defensive scheme has to be to avoid the blown coverages and missed tackles. Couldn't do that last year and we rode Flanders to the finish, SHSU will have to play as close to perfect IMHO to win this one. Like I said, mad respect for your squad and program.

If you don't mind me asking, what your coaches do to "shake up the team" before SUU?

With your recent history, I don't think SHSU is going to be sneaking up on anyone. An 0-3 all-time record (with two of those being heart-breaking losses in the playoffs), first game of the season on ESPN...yeah, pretty sure the team will be ready for this one.

I guess that's fair enough, I am sure your staff will have your boys ready to go. I guess I just see this game as being a more even contest that a few of the posters on this site. If we win will you guys finally present us our Big Sky trophy from 2011-2013? We beat the best teams from the Big Sky during those years, fair's fair.

SHSU threw for less than 200 yards, combined against us the last two years. Our problem was stopping this beast called Tim Flanders. He ran for over 500 yards in two games against us. He was a hell of a player, but glad he is gone. For some reason, we could not stop Flanders or the SHSU style of offense the last two years.

I honestly think we would have fared better against NDSU in 2012 and 2013 than SHSU, we have nightmares stopping that style of offense.

I think we are all confident because they have a new coach, who will most likely change the style a little bit, which favors us, and SHSU lost their three horses on offense to graduation. Plus we have VA who has 9 td's in 6 quarters of play against SHSU. SHSU may have some great newcomers, but its game 1, and they will be thrown to the fire.

I'm not sure they really changed anything. We had a difficult stretch of road games to open last season, IIRC (@ Oregon State, @ Toledo, @ SHSU), so I think that had something to do with it. I'd say the Weber State game was really where we started to get things on track.

This year the schedule is slightly more favorable, but if we don't stay on track during a stretch of road games from Sept 6 - Sept 27 (@ Washington, @ UC-Davis, @ Montana State) the season could go south fairly quickly, although we do now have a bye prior to the MSU game thanks to moving our game with you guys to Aug 23rd. If we can get through the early part of the season with only a loss or two, I think we'll be sitting pretty well as we face the weaker portion of our conference schedule up until we play Montana on the 8th of Nov.

Did we have problems stopping their offense with Flanders and co. because of our style of defense which seemed to be bend but do not break and when Flanders did break loose we could not catch him? Or was it that our players just not as good as their players? So scheme vs personnel?

Plain and simple, we struggle with the spread option offenses, with a mobile QB. SHSU the last 2 years, Portland State, Toledo. Those teams tend to kill us on the ground...

I don't think its our personnel, my thoughts are that it is scheme. We don't see it a lot, but when we do, we seem overwhelmed. Looking at teams this year, I think the Griz will go back to more of a spread option, or at least they should. We always struggle with the Pistol style, pretty much the same thing that PSU runs. If there is a team in the playoffs I wouldn't want to see, its SELA for the same reasons as above...
