Just got home from teaching a class here in China. Looked on ESPN.com and see that us Weber Cats can smile.

Weber State 62
Montana .... 59

Don't know anything except I'll be much more interested in the NCAA brackets this year than in past years.

Congratulations Wildcat team & coaches!! On radio post game, Eric Duft wanted to say Kudos to the Weber fans who showed up in Reno, cheering the team leaving the hotel and showing a lot of purple in the arena, said thanks to the best fans in the Big Sky. Senglin named MVP. Good Luck Wildcats, you'll need it! Selection party @ the DEC tomorrow, doors open @ 3pm. :-D

Definitely three of the most exciting games Weber has played, hats off to all the teams for making it one of the best tournaments in history.Would have been better if played in front of bigger crowds though but that's the way it is.Hats off to Montana and good luck in your tournament. WAY TO GO WILDCATS WE ARE SO PROUD.

Hats off to the Griz, they played a heck of a game and they played great defense, Weber just made a few more plays down the stretch and that inbound play with Baker was AWESOME.

These Weber / Montana games are getting so fun to watch lately, it a good rivalry with mutual respect between both fans and coaches, I wish the football series was more like the Basketball series, (winning in Missoula was a good start). But this has become a fantastic rivalry series.

I hope that Montana gets a good Tourney, NIT would be great, but it might be better for them to make either the CIT or CBI, that was one of the funnest tournaments to watch a few years ago, and I think it's Montana's best chance at doing a deep tourney run like we had, Montana is young and the continued play and development could be huge.

Great job by Weber, congrats to all the players and coaches (THANK YOU RANDY RAHE!!!) to go from 8th place to Big Sky regular season and tournament Champs. AWESOME.

GO WEBER

That game was another instant classic. What a game! That was comparable to the 2012 Final. Down to the wire, defensive, battle. What a match up!

The Cats did just enough and held on for the W! Great team win for Randy and Co. And another complete banner to hang in the Dee.

Montana's game plan was to limit our bigs. They did a great job shutting down Joel. Every time he touch the ball, he was immediately doubled. I've loved the battles between him and Bruenig. Two great bigs!! Too bad one had to lose. Good luck to the Griz going forward. I hope for an NIT but most likely CBI or CIT.

Cats are going dancin!! Please bring on Utah!!

I'll be rooting for you guys tonight...Montana has the most arrogant fans in the BigSky, as proved by their actions in Reno this week....too bad more of you aren't making the drive to support your team but there is a decent size contingent of Weber fans there already....Good Luck and BEAT THE GRIZ!!!!!

Nice job bashing a whole fan base with one broad stroke. Maybe someday Sac will have a reason to have "arrogant" fans. Oh well, you'll always have the "Pam" thing. Lol
Nice game Weber! I watched most of the games, Weber showed a lot of heart throughout the tourney, do the Big Sky proud in the big dance!!

Long time Griz fan here. I visit this site frequently but rarely comment. Just wanted to offer my sincere congratulations to the Weber State Wildcats for winning both the regular season and post season tourney titles. Your team earned them and deserved them. I also felt the all-tourney selections were spot on this year.

I also felt compelled to note that you have one of the classiest of all Division 1 coaches in Mr Randy Rahe. I met him and interviewed him several times when I was a working man (I'm now retired) and grew to respect his honesty, candor, abilities and -- most importantly -- his teacher-mentor compassion. I was touched tonight when I saw the video of him trying to compliment a disconsolate Walter Wright. That picture was worth many words to me and illustrated the type of man your coach is.

Lastly, best of luck in the dance.

one of the classiest post's I have ever read on any fan forum, thank you for the kind words.

This Wildcat fan will be pulling for Montana in whatever post season tournament they end up in.

I know Randy doesn't always win the games he should, but we at Weber are lucky to have him and he continues to remind us why. Thank You Randy Rahe for everything.

GO WEBER

RENO, Nev. — With a week full of games behind it, the Big Sky Conference is enthusiastic about the prospects of its new neutral-site tournament in Reno after its first run putting on the event.

“I've been very enthused by people's response once they got here,” Big Sky Deputy Commissioner Ron Loghry said. “That includes administrators, coaches, student-athletes and fans. Even people who were questioning if this could work are now 100 percent behind it.”

The tournament began Monday, March 7, and finished with both the men’s and women’s championship games Saturday. Loghry said many schools and fans began arriving Sunday, ready to enjoy the event.

Fans boarded at the many hotels within one block of the Reno Events Center, the host site for the Big Sky basketball championships.

“With the hotels one block away, to see the student-athletes, administrators and fans over there mingling are exactly what we pictured this could be,” Loghry said. “So we're very enthused by that.”

Loghry said despite it being the Big Sky’s first neutral-site rodeo, they did everything they could to prepare. Most every operation in Reno appeared to go quite well, and he credited his staff — especially Jon Kasper, assistant commissioner over championships — for getting the job done.

“I have trust in our staff. I knew the trains would run on time, the games would go, the floor, the clocks, those would be flawless. We left nothing to chance there,” Loghry said. “That part of it has gone beyond-belief well. Our feedback from coaches and student-athletes has been incredible.”

Kasper said the Big Sky staff has been working from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day in a tiring, but rewarding and exciting, experience.

“The best part has been to see the student-athletes, the administrators and the fans — we knew what they would experience when they came here, and it's come to fruition,” Kasper said. “The student-athletes have nothing but good things to say, the fans are enjoying themselves. To see our basketball fans interact with each other, we've never had that before.”

Loghry said schools have given feedback for improvements, like more staged fan events, and the conference knows that despite a good first run, it must improve for 2017, citing a work room with whiteboards full of ideas for next year.

“Next year, you're not going to come here and have us standing here saying 'It's just like last year.' We know this has to step up. More video scoreboards, fan zones, things we didn't have access to this year,” Loghry said.

Once the week began, Loghry said the buy-in has been 100 percent from all 12 schools, who have now vowed to bring more personnel to step up the experience next season.

Loghry acknowledged skeptics may remain in fanbases throughout the conference. He said fans at home should use fellow fans who did travel to Reno as a barometer for the event.

“I'd ask them to ask their fellow fans who came,” he said. “I had fans stopping me when we had our Big Sky shirts on the first couple days, saying this is incredible, this is fun, this is really cool.”

Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee echoed that sentiment.

“I know there are a lot of people at home who ... didn't think it would work or didn't want to support it because we should be at home tonight. I get that, I would absolutely rather be at home,” Bovee said. “But it is here, so I hope for the future we can get our fans to come and have a good time together.”

“I've talked to a lot of our fans here who have had a good time,” Bovee said.

“Was it a slam dunk, home run?” Kasper asked. “In our eyes, maybe it was. It fans eyes, maybe it wasn't. Be we know we're going to grow it and get better.”

While I am an avid supporter of reg season champ hosting, it doesn't seem like the Big Sky will be going back to that format anytime soon, the only change should be moving the tournament to a more centralized location within a state with an actual Big Sky presence.

Having said that I will admit that minus a few games, (Eastern Wash/NAU, NoDak/ISU) the games were all very entertaining and pretty close, the Big Sky tournament ended the way it should, Weber State vs Montana in the final, no better game for a final, (especially since Weber won  ). There was a pretty good contingent of Purple and White and Maroon and Silver in the championship game, but that was only on the one side of the arena, the other side was pretty empty, it bothers me to think how empty the arena was in the championship with the two best teams representing, thinking what would it have been like if neither Weber or Montana made the final :? …… yeah it wouldn't have been pretty, but it would really be no different had it been at a host site without the host team playing.

Yes the games were exciting and it's been fun watching a solid week of Big Sky basketball, but for this tournament to become a real success, fans from the other 10 schools (ok maybe - Sac State) 9 schools need invest in it as well, but we all know that for that to happen the Big Sky as a whole needs to get better, and win more OOC games, (Weber and Montana included). The schools in this conference need to invest and put in the effort of making this conference better, it can happen, there is no reason the Big Sky can't become another Big West or Missouri Valley, or heck another WCC, but only if all 12 teams invest in making it that way.

Right now I give the Reno thing a 50/50,

The Success: From what I heard it was organized and planned well, and the games were exciting and fun to watch.

The failure: The attendance needs to improve big time. If this is to succeed fans from every school need to invest in it.

This was a trial run of sorts for the conference and maybe it can grow, but as of right now, I wouldn't call Reno a success, but I also wouldn't call it a failure.

After having experienced this thing first hand, I would say that it was a huge success. Attendance was just OK, but everything else about the tournament was great. Weber's crowd was the biggest and loudest, but Montana, Idaho, ISU, MSU, EWU, PSU, and Sac. had good showings as well. The crowds were bigger than I expected. The arena was OK for basketball, not perfect, but OK. Dining, lodging, transportation, and nonrelated activities were all good. It was a great atmosphere around the hotels, shows and dining. One of the good things about doing an event like this is to talk to all of the other school's fans, players and staffs, away from the games. Many schools had their own receptions, including Weber, and invited other fans to come and meet with them. I spoke with fans from 7 or 8 other schools and it was good to hear the other perspectives.

I would highly recommend everyone to plan on going next year. The hotels were mostly full. There are other activities going on besides our tournament. Plan to get your reservations in early for next years event. However, there are several more hotels within walking distance of the arena. Reno is very walkable. We took in a show one evening and we did a little walking along the Truckee River that runs through town. There was live music at many of the bars and there seemed to be a wide range of types.

I would be willing to bet that the attendance will, at least, double next year. Everyone I saw was having a great time. :thumb: :thumb:

Glad to hear those who went loved it. The big sky saying it was amazing and a slam dunk baffles me. If it was so great why was there no one there?!?!?!?!? It made me so mad seeing 1 vs 2 in an empty arena.

2,516 attendance for the final. Was there really over 2,000? From the view on tv the far side looked sparse and the side that had seats behind the goal had 2 guys. The camera side must have been packed since I could not see it.

I hate that we are so pleased with a mediocre conf. The entire point of the winner hosting is because we are the big sky not big 12. Understand this, majority of big sky teams can't get anyone to show up for home games.

I'm glad we got it done and aren't in nit but that game should have been at home.

I'll provide stats later but I think this was the lowest attended title game with a 1 seed in big sky history or since 2001 at north ridge.

The fans were all sitting behind their team's benches. If they were using the cameras on the opposite side of the arena, it would have looked much better. The AD and staff actually told us to sit there. The thinking was that would show best. The camera crew must have had other ideas. The BSC should have coordinated that part a little better. That attendance would seem accurate to me. Not too many fans wanted to sit through a lot of games that their school wasn't involved in or wouldn't be playing next. I stuck around to see the teams we might be playing next. I wanted to see how they were playing. By halftime, you could tell who was going to win. I never stayed past half in those games. I think that there were many fans who thought the same way I did. The championship game didn't have many non-school fans. I was hoping that there would be a lot of students drive over for Saturday's game. There were a few who made the trip, but I was hoping for 500 to 600.
The students need to budget for a few busses next year. It could be a great roadie for the students and a good organizational learning experience. Students should not be able to graduate without some sort of campus involvement and community interaction. If all they have is academics, they are not educated. There is more to life than math and reading and writing. They need to be able to live and participate in a community and I am not talking about texting or talking in chat rooms. :coffee:

To me, the worst thing about last week, was watching teams win on their home courts. I watched Stony Brook students and fans storm the court after their team win and the atmosphere was infections and covetous. I remember rushing the court at the Dee after Weber won in 03. It was such an amazing experience. A great moment as a student and fan. That was what was most upsetting to me about Saturday night. That game should have been played in front of thousands of fans. It would have been a great time to highlight the fan, community, alumni, and most important student experience in the Big Sky, but no. It was witnessed by maybe a thousand fans in a mostly empty arena. I'm glad that there was a strong Weber contingent in Reno, but that contingent was mostly retired alumni. Those who had the funds and time available to go. Yes, I had a few friends attend, and enjoy it, I most likely will attend in the future, but to ever say it is better than hosting at a conference schools home court is factitious, wrong, and absolutely insane. Nothing replaces the packed stadiums that have been the hosts of the Big Sky's biggest game. Reno to me...is still a terrible idea.

I’ll chime in here (not sure which Reno thread to put this in, there are so many):

First off congrats Weber fans, Senglin was a total beast when needed. Watching him carry WSU over UND and then breaking off Montucky with some serious skills was very enjoyable to watch. WSU deserved the title this year and I’m very glad I went. Good luck in the Dance. :thumb:

Now onto the Reno stuff. I booked my trip Wednesday after we beat MSU Tuesday night so I over paid for everything. I was like most of the haters on here and wasn’t sure about going (I’m not making that mistake again). Weebs will always be in the later rounds so I dunno why people are complaining about taking a whole week off for this thing. Fly in mid-day Thursday or hit the road early Thursday morning and you guys should be fine. Hell, Amtrak is even an option. Since the final is Saturday, that gives you all of Sunday to get home. If you’re worried about hotel costs, there are plenty of divey motels all over Reno (some even in downtown) so you don’t have to stay in a casino hotel if you don’t want to.

I had a great time. It was pretty cool getting to meet fans from other fan bases as the BSC really did a hell of a job organizing the tournament and putting in the effort needed to make this a success. I’m glad this will have 2 more years to grow; hopefully by then it will be highly unlikely this tournament ever leaves Reno. For anyone complaining that the BSC is a “small time” conference, the Reno tournament sure had a “big time” feel to it. I recommend making a trip of it next year, you have plenty of time between now and then to figure it out.

Cheers!

So your team punches a ticket to the Dance Saturday and you are more focused and upset about what another conference on the other side of the country is doing at the same time? :wtf:

that's the thing that happens on this board SD HORNET.we dwell on the negative side. (That's what I was told)
