D1 Transfers

Interesting Hawkeye, that Darling and Stavrev played 2 years apart at Meyerscough. Stavrev came to WSU in 2015-16 school year and Darling in the 2016-17 school year. By my math (which admittedly is lacking) that puts them one year apart at Meyerscough. Maybe you have some info that I am not privy too...

I hold my hands up, yes it was 1 year apart. My mistake. But would you expect a kid to tell a coach "yes don't take him, get someone else". he has had a experience of a lifetime although not played, would you deny him that for your own selfishness? just to win games. :ohno:

Yes I would. I am glad he enjoyed his time here. Many of us on this board are boosters and we donate to the scholarship fund. We helped fulfill that experience of a lifetime for George. We had a glaring need for a post player that could come in and provide 5-10 minutes a game of quality back up in the post. Unfortunately George did not fulfill that need and many of us were left shaking our heads as to why we brought in a player that did not fulfill our main need. Weber State is the big fish in the Big Sky conference, we expect to win the conference every year. We had a 4 game losing streak at the end of the season where are lack of depth in the post showed and was exposed.

Wow...a lot to respond to.

First, Hawkeye...dude, yes, there are a number of former athletes on this board who have gone through the same things our present athletes are struggling through. As an athlete you know when you are signed why you are being selected for a scholarship. Your job is to play a sport and then do well in school. If a kid, on an academic scholarship doesn't maintain his/her GPA, they lose the scholarship. If a student athlete doesn't excel on the field or court, they lose the scholarship. We aren't in high school and surely aren't in elementary (except the Big Sky wants everyone to get a ribbon with their idiotic tournament) where everyone gets a participation ribbon. This is real life. You have to work. Every athlete was the high school "star" but that rarely transfers over to the university level. Things happen. The athletics department isn't running a charity. Welcome to DI athletics. Players come and go every year. You take the good with the bad and do your best. It is called life. You learn really quick you either work hard or you lose your chance.

Baller...Chris Golden was a heck of a player and personally, I wouldn't have minded him staying for another year. The athlete I really missed with Johnson-Coston. We could have used his hustle his senior year. No matter, Golden was a "me" type player. He couldn't be on the same court with Senglin. Absolutely no chemistry between those two guys. When Senglin went down, you noticed how much better our team got. Same thing happened when Golden left the next year. Coach had to decide between the two and he felt that there was a greater upside keeping Senglin over Golden. But, Golden was a hell of a basketball player. It was too bad that the two of them couldn't play together. As for Cannon, the guy is a leader. He is a team guy first and foremost and understands the game of basketball. When he is on the floor, at least on the offensive side, our offense ran so smoothly. He had a rough sophomore year, but who is to say that would continue into his Junior year? Besides, why would you cut someone who is your best PG, team QB, and a really smart guy. We all know he can play. To me, I still see him as a major loss. I'd rather go into battle with a guy like Cannon than other options we still have.

Tal, calm down. Yes, everybody wants to succeed in DI, but at the end of the day they're still young adults in college that are still developing their talent. This isn't pro, so you have no right to demand success. If you were still in school you'd probably understand because of all the things students have outside of the sport. It's the same with youth sports, every parent does the same thing: their kid does something good, so the parents think they're the greatest. But when something goes wrong, they freak out and try to find a scapegoat.

I'm with Tal on this one. This is exactly like real life situations. When you get hired on a new job, you have a probationary period when you can be let go for nothing more than not performing up to expectations. Scholarships work in about the same way.

There is another dynamic that is in play here. I have had friends and family who have earned athletic scholarships and then either given them up or had them taken away because they simply lost the desire to continue working that hard for the dream. In other words, they simply burned out. Sometimes things just shift in your life and priorities change. It's not a failure, it's just a change. From the outside looking in, we don't get the whole picture. These are young men and women of great value, who deserve our respect and understanding. Things change, new opportunities present themselves. :coffee:

Right... and you're a 15 year old?
This has to be the dumbest post I have seen in years. What do you know about being a college player, father/mother, booster or fan of WSU? Tal has every right to demand success, who are you to challenge his opinions? Again, dumbest post in a while.

So, what's the next step? Any news? We have an open scholarship. What is the next step by Rahe?

A. Bring in a JUCO?
B. Bring in a Transfer?
C. Bring in a 5th year guy?
D. Bring in another FR for 2017 -2018?
E. Hold onto the Scholarship for Fall for a 2018 Signee?

I would like either B or E. If we can find a good wing type player to transfer in and sit out this year would be cool. We love both Dusty and Ryan next year. We would only have Riley Court at the SF position after this next year. I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in a 5th year transfer PG like Eastern Washington did last year. He was awesome for them last year for that one year. I hope Doc Nelson is ready to come in and play big minutes. We are going to need him.

Sign George Darlings dad if has any eligibility left. That way he can wear a jersey and have the experience of a lifetime like his son did. Would you want to deny him this because of your selfishness Tal???

Joking aside, I would like to see us bring back Gittens before we sign a 5th year or JUCO. The team could use his grit and toughness.

I was also thinking, since we have an open spot, let Gittens come back????? His situation has me scratching my head. He would really help us I think.

I'm such a turd! How dare I expect someone receiving a scholarship to earn it.

I think it is B or E.

Totally agree with you Tal... you are such a turd.

90%-B
10%-E

I might be too high on the chances of E.

We are already over an average of one transfer for every DI program, and we have just started into the transfer season. We are at around 350 transfers on the market now and will probably hit 700 within the next month or so. There are some high quality players in that market right now and there will be many more. DI schools have until July 1st to release players from their grants. There are still transfers after that, but some new rules apply. :coffee:

Myerscough is 0 for 3 in the BSC.

Both of our guys from Myerscough didn't make it out of their freshman years. Now Kyle Carey of UNC has the same result. That should speak volumes about the level of competition in Great Briton, and the quality of basketball being taught at Myerscough. The one guy, Kiko, who probably had the skill level to make it, injured himself out of contributing. The other two, Darling and Carey, couldn't make it past first base. I will be very skeptical of any recruits coming out of GB in the future.

Braden Koelliker is transferring from Colorado State. Do we use the last scholarship on him, assuming he wants to come back home? He graduated from Davis High, so seems like a good fit. He is 6'9" which would give us the much needed height that is lacking with the squad going forward.

This is a good find. I'm 60% sure about the kid who is transferring, but I haven't seen any indications as of yet to prove that he is for sure going to come. If not, this would make a lot of sense. Nevertheless, just the way Randy made room, tells me that he had a plan and that that kid, when announcing his transfer, would simultaneously announce his new school. That is how it looks to me. It just seems like this has been already worked out.

It would be a nice get. I think with him, Braxton, and Chapman, in two years we could be really good. Tal, are you aware of any other possible D1 transfers coming in? I saw Gittens around town the other day, and he is in a cast. His career could very well be over.

I have a theory, but so far nothing has happened. But, in a case like this player, he might be waiting till school is over and then announce. Isn't shaking the boat too much now, and still gets the chance to train.

Do we want Braden to come here? Will he be able to contribute right away? What are his strengths and weaknesses?

“I want to thank the entire community of Fort Collins and all those involved with Colorado State,” Koelliker said via a press release. “I’ve had an incredible experience being here and learning from such experienced and professional people. It’s in the best interest for me and my family to transfer from Colorado State University as we are looking to move closer to home.

I believe that it is only a slight, slight, slight chance that he would end up at Weber. You all can continue to speculate on it if you want, but I don't see it happening. Maybe he ends up at UVU or SUU. I would take some bets on it being one of those two.
